I’m like you, Buckin’. I didn’t grow up with someone to show me this stuff. I don’t really have an interest in tinkering with vehicles. But I live in the country, drive older vehicles, and there’s no reliable mechanics nearby. Out of necessity I have been learning to maintain my own vehicles, one of which is an ‘82 F250. Every repair and service is a first-time learning experience for me. I just watch a video or two, get the tools I need, and sometimes have a friend come lend a hand. It’s amazing.

Buckin is a lot like a brother. He has one year on me,but we both been felling timber for 30 plus years. I live in Ohio so I cut only hard woods and a lot of veneer.when i first heard him say. You have to get the gullet.. I thought here's a man after my heart. He knows how to file a chain. Not many out there can truly get a chain sharp.

Love how you’re overcoming your fear. I’ve been in a two year slump. Depression and anxiety rules me but guys like you inspire me to get back up on my two feet. I do have decades of mechanical experience but my TBI from a bad motorcycle accident in 2017 kind of took over my life. Good news I’m back in the game as I just fixed the front end of my Camaro and now I’m doing the same with my old celica. Just work safely and keep up the good work.

I had a video of yours come up on my RU-vid suggestions. I watched Old Trucks teach you and well I’m glad I did. I think I am a member of your beat up body club. After being rear ended by 2 drunks, hitting a rock cut outside of Terrace Bay many years ago destroying a new Dodge 1/2 ton and finally rolling and cartwheeling a Chevy Suburban at 55mph I can sympathize with most of what you said about your body. I did what you did I learned if you don’t laugh at things that happen you’ll cry. I decide that the best approach was left foot in front of right foot and repeat as required. My mom had a Ukrainian saying that went “ if you stop moving moss will grow on your feet” I keep moving. In all the crashes I was a passenger and the Doctors just prescribed pain killers. I found very quickly that they did nothing to help and mostly were not a good idea to rely on. I was in pain most of the time. I just decided to put up with the pain and did what a book titled Patient Heal thyself suggested. Like you I have to be careful what I do because of a spinal injury. It doesn’t stop me though I just have to work smart not hard. You are an inspiration to many honest and genuine. Yes you are absolutely right the universe can and will heal you! I agree it’s not hard you can hit it’s how hard you get hit and keep moving forward! Oh and of all the Ford trucks I’ve owned my absolute favorite was an 81 F150, 300 straight 6 engine, 4WD, 8’ box, 2 door with a stick shift and Bull Low! I regret ever selling it! I subscribed to your channel awhile back. Take care of yourself BBRS from another beat up body in Northern Ontario.

Have always used a flathead screwdriver to adjust the star wheel on drum brakes. If you spray a little wd40 or pb-blaster on the threads, once it gets loose you can usually turn by hand without much trouble.

It was fun, for once, watching and knowing I had more experience....... lol. Any old Flat screwdriver will usually work, but yes a Brake Paddle tool is better since it has a bend to give more room for movement. Yep, you have to hold that adjusting paddle out the whole time as you retract the adjuster. *The Adjuster only work when you apply the Brakes while backing up. This prevents the Brakes from adjusting out and locking the brakes in place.
@h200z
@h200z 10 месяцев назад
That little piece interfering with the star adjuster is a self adjuster,, when you pump the brakes in reverse it ratchets on the star and adjust the brake sort of automatically

When replacing drums or disks you need to spray them off with brake clean. They have a protective oil on them to prevent rust. As you should know oil on brake pads or shoes is not good for breaking. As a rule thumb it's a good idea to replace drums or disks as a set. Just my $.02. Hope it helps friend. God Bless!

Buckin’!!! Next time you find yourself doing drum brakes. Do your fingers a favor and grab a flat heat screw driver. You still have to hold that little metal piece out of the way but your screwdriver can fit in those notches on the adjuster and get ya where ya need to be. I’m not a mechanic but I try to work on all my stuff too. It saves money and I’m certainly not made of it nor do I have a money tree. Still looking for one on my property lol. Have a great day. I like your leverage trick with the crow bar. Forgot about that one haha

Buckin, with your knee issues you would love using what is referred to as a kneeling pad, some are an inch thick, some are thicker yet as per 1.5 inches for an example and made out of a closed foam that doesn't soak up moisture. You can throw it down on rough gravel and kneel down and they really support the knees, or can sit on it as well. Sure, actual knee pads have their place too but having one of these pads is really handy. Home Depot for an example has Husky brand units that are 22" x 15' and 1.5" thick. Oh and about using a floor jack, bottle jack or a jack stand outside on gravel or grass, having some 3/16 or 1/4" thick steel plates that are good sized makes using a jack stand in crap conditions safe. There have been some bad accidents with using jack stands on a non cement surface or trying to use the wrong type of wood under a jack stand to support it and cracks and lets the vehicle down in an instant.

I'm lucky I literally grew up in a garage, my dad ran one when I was a kid, I started working there at 14 lol. That old truck is in good shape. The cable and spring get pulled when the shoes shift ,rotating a bit, when you spank the brake backing up. It's a Self adjuster.. Figuring out which way to rotate the adjustment wheel will the finger shredder edge? The thing can turn one way, in every drum brake design. It can tighten the brakes without having to overcome any devices. Bless You Billy,,

A half century ago, when I was a kid, I was told to back up quickly and hit the brakes hard so the auto adjusters would adjust the drum brakes... I never knew just what quickly meant in MPH nor how hard was hard but what I did worked. Front disk brakes on cars and light trucks were starting to become more common then but the only car I personally saw with rear disk brakes in those days was a 1969 Jaguar XKE... a necessity for a street legal car that could hit 150 MPH. 😉
