Versova (वेसावा /येसाव) is the name of a Fishing Village in Mumbai. The Name of the village in Marathi local language is Vesave (वेसावे) Koliwada. Vesawa is similar to the Marathi word "Visava" (विसावा) meaning safe place to take rest. The name of this historic Village of Mumbai also appears as "Yesav" (येसाव) in the ancient text known as Mahikavatichi Bakhar (महिकावतीची बखर) written during 13th-14th century period by Keshavacharya which includes descriptions of nearly 168 places in the Maharashtra's North konkan areas of Thane & Mumbai district. This places were during the period AD 1141-42 ruled by Bimb dynasty (King Bhimdev or Bimb) whose capital was Kelve-Mahim in Palghar near Vasai. Out of this 168 places Yesav (Versova) is one of them mentioned in that ancient text.
Also, Versova is historical place because of it's contribution to Indian Independence.... More than 100 Freedom Fighters from the Versova Fishing community had participated in the National movement in the Pre Independence era. Tiger of Versova (title given by Britishers to the angry young leader from the village) Shri. Posha Nakhwa belonged to this fishing village. Today a Municipal school and a garden has been named after him in the area. Similarly, FF. Pandurang Shimga Ramle was another Freedom Fighter from the region whose name has been given to the main street of this Village. Few other Freedom Fighters were Hiraji Chikhale, Shantaram Vesavkar, Ramesh Ramle, Mr. Vaghmare, Mrs. Ghuste who had actively participated in the Co-Operative Fisheries revolution in the Versova Village who led to the installation of Fisheries Co-Operative Societies for the Fisher Folks. Shr. Govind Siddhe, Ramchandra Gharu, Terekar, Bhalchandra Bhandari, etc. Were amongst few other Freedom strugglers.
Similarly, Madh-Versova Fort built by Portuguese at Madh island also marks the historical importance of this place.
