This song is so legendary... since I turned off my RU-vid notifications to finish my homework I forgot what your channel was called so I looked for the reactions to this song to rediscover your channel lol
I’m really enjoying your videos. I’m currently looking through all of your K.dod (Kendrick Lamar) reaction videos. I’m a big fan of hip-hop (and an artist myself) and it’s always fun to watch people who are new to the genre listen to it. There is quite the learning curve to understanding the double entendres in the lyrics, the slang and of course the context. For instance, this song is about alcohol abuse, but the album is a concept album. In the place of the album this song is actually him being influenced by his friends and it precedes a moment before he and his friends end up involved in a drive-by shooting resulting in one of their deaths which actually leads them to a moment of making a spiritual renewal and finding Faith in Christ. But even deeper than THAT, is the fact that this song sounds like a drinking anthem. That would be very common in modern hip-hop at the time, so the fact that this song is actually social commentary about the destructive and common nature of alcoholism within the culture serves as a bit of a trojan horse to proclaim a message of health. There were even remixes by other artists made that were more about drinking than sobering up. lol But you would only get that impact if you were in the culture itself or at least speaking with someone who understands the context. Either way, I love hip-hop as a culture and the art that comes from it and welcome you into this space and thank you for your commentary and content!
That was my first real rap song reaction (can't count Bubblin' by A Paak). And a year later I'm still struggling to get the meaning of a lot of it. But commentors, like yourself and friends help me out somewhat. Still so much to learn...
@@MusicReaction That's part of the beauty of the genre! I hope you're enjoying the ride! I got into hip-hop when I was probably 12 or so, and I remember how it was at first. It's a fun journey!
