Old World Cape May, New Jersey: Lenape Retreat, LOST South Cape May, Early Victorian Mansions 

Excellent presentation, strange how the photos went from crude huts to historical marvels of architecture, so enjoying the truth being revealed, appreciate your divine research

We visit Cape May at least 3 times a year, it is a beautiful town, great family destination, would say there is not another like it in the whole U.S. It does pack in however during the summer days. Congress Hall remains and they do tell of the of the great fire that wiped out a lot of the original Victorian homes. During storms, some of the old rail road tracks are exposed on the beach. According to the historical documents I have seen there, the beach has been eroding for centuries. Thanks for this video, love seeing those old pictures.

Now... this is really interesting research and hypothesis. Some very good points/pointers to open debate. It is a shame (and possibly criminal) that 'arson'(?) and lack of historical records restrict conclusions - but do not impede the investigations.

Fire, everything was destroyed by fire, such a useful tool of the late 1800 and early 1900s. Brilliant video, thank you for going to all the trouble to create it and bring the information to life.

Love staying in Cape May! There are still many preserved Victorian homes to see and some to stay in, as many are b&b's. The beaches are nice and clean, the boutique shops are fun. And a carriage ride through the city at night is so romantic. Would like to point out that the picture of the "Light of Asia" elephant building is actually of her older sister "Lucy", who still stands today in Margate, NJ. The only existing picture of the "Light of Asia" shows a partially completed structure

Fun fact: the main road taken (and a road I still take everyday to work) is delsea drive. Because it stretches from the DELaware river to the sea.

Cape may and wildwood have the whitest sand beaches in Jersey nothing like the rest of the shore towns! The amount of Victorian homes there is only rivaled by one place in America and it’s a neighborhood in Louisville Kentucky. Have you seen the old hotel that was demolished in Atlantic City?! It was stunning. Thank you for all the research you do brother.

We used too vacation every year inCape May in the 70s it was awesome!

I grew up in Cape May - the pier isn’t there anymore, but if you go to the beachside Convention Hall building cluster, the restaurant all the way on the right (Ocean Deck, Henry’s, Mermaids, I don’t know what it is called these days), it has the pier’s old ticket window still in it (in the front door on the right, part of the “windowed wall” that separates parts of the restaurant. It still looks like a ticket window). My Grandmom’s best friend ran the Ocean Deck when I was a little girl, she was the one that told me what that was, and she’s have grown up in Cape May in the 19teens and 1920’s. I always thought that was really cool. I also thought it was really interesting that the pier met it’s demise by people rushing out to the end of it to see a ship fire. And last random local fact, my old next door neighbor lived in West Cape May during the storm that took out South Cape May. She said it drowned all their chickens, and that after the storm her brothers had a truck and helped people try to salvage some of their belongings before the houses fell over post-storm in South Cape May. Crazy stuff!

This presentation has lifted another veil regarding the native Americans. They were far more advanced than we were made to believe. We tend to think of that their architectural style was that of a wigwam, when in actuality they were building mammoth intricately designed buildings. Their images are carved into the city hall of Philadelphia, which happens to be the largest municipal building in the world.

The Lenape were originally here in Staten Island as well.Beach erosion had the biggest impact down along the sand flats.Grand old homes still occupy Cape May however much was lost unfortunately.

I wouldnt know where to begin... from my time spent in Cape May, both living there and as a scalloper on commercial vessels docked there, to my time spent in the 'four corners' region (NJ, PA, DE, MD) hanging cable TV lines - pole to pole for miles and miles, through some of the most beautiful lands in the world (Paradise, Lancaster, Lititz, etc) - yes, in the 'Amish country' - (for the Mennonites, mostly) - even rowing a boat with my crew across the Susquehana to hang cable to two towers on each side of the river and attaching it to 80' poles on either side, or climbing the Conestoga trail, up to the Pequa cold caves and getting lost in there while spelunking, etc... But I can say, that youre onto the bigger picture regarding the secret history of the entire area that 'the powers that shouldnt be' definitely DO NOT want us to know about. Great video Jar. Thanks for the memories. (Atlantic City was an amazing place too.)

At 7:00, I’m thinking they burned most of these which housed a central heating system and other amenities which needed erasing.

9:00 I believe it's an actual giant petrified elephant. You can see where they cut rectangular entrances on it's sides and it's eyes (organ material) has decayed away. That's a powerfully narrative changing image, I've never seen!

Any opinions on old buldings being destroyed to destroy the tech as well as possible entrances to underground tunnels? Than taken over by the city or the government because a private owner would prob stumble across underground entrances or access ones they know about from oral history from their family? Why hasn't goverment, states, city's who have been donated or brought these lands use them to give lower income people neighborhoos or plots of land to fix up instead of only making buildings to house lower income families and stuff them all in small apartments and buildings while funding pays 2,000 a month or more in rental assistance while the families pay 50 a month if anything? Cheaper, more efficent to give people land, houses and neighborhoods for a fraction of the price. A project building has an average of about 500 apts per building. 2000 a month times.500 the goverment pays and right next to that building is another and another. 10 buildings groupled together with the government paying for 5,0000 families living in buildings that cover les than 2 acres. Why so many national parks with more aceres in one than moat of all the indian reservations together

I think you're full of crap. You make it sound like there is nothing worth seeing left in Cape May and that the Indians designed and built grand hotels for their "summer vacations". Have you been to Cape May? Because if you have than you would know why Travel Magazine rates it as a top ten tourist town in America.
