I'm taking this super rusty old hand plane made during the war era 75 years ago, and restoring it to its former glory.

I recently did this to my grandfathers plane that's from the 1930's. Feels great to have a tool he used for decades still fully functional. Helps me remember him.

That old black "paint" is actually called Japaning. I read that it was developed in England and can be done in a cold process (it looks melted on.) Was really durable but most old planes at least have chips or worse in that finish. You did a nice job leaving some of the patina on the tote and knob. If you ever want to become expert in sharpening by hand watch Rob Cosman do his magic on plane irons, chisels, and any edge tools. Great video! Thanks for the entertainment! I have my grandfather's 1915 Stanley Jointer plane. It measures like a #7 does today. He was a carpenter and when I was 15 I built 2 houses with him and my Dad in the summer of 1975. Learned so much and became much closer with him as well!

After use vinegar with Bicarbonate de soude you MUST always wash all the items in clear water and put on them fluids like WD40 or 3in1 oil and ... no return of rust ! I like all this old tools made by Stanley ; however the actual poor conditions they are, a pinte of "elbow oil" can make them more usefull than new one ! I use also an ultrasonic cleaner ; after had used bath of water + vinegar + bicarbonate de soude ( soda bakery powder ? ) and rinse in clear water, I put all the stuff in ultrasonic cleaner with a drop of digreaser or dishes liquid soap . Three minutes after all is clean like as new ones ! Mine is made by Leuchtturm and it is very effective ! Thanks you for all your videos ! Stay safe and healthy !!!

Note for the future: always apply thin coats of paint. It feels like it takes longer but it’ll always come out looking the best. Thin coats, let it settle for a second, and then another coat. Great video as always!

Wow! I've watched some really awesome restoration videos, but your restoration has to be the absolute best one I've ever seen. It turned out so gorgeous! You did a phenomenal job! I've collected about 5 or 6 Stanley hand planes from yard sales and antique stores. 1 other brand (can't remember off hand) and one Stanley no 6 that was found in the dumpster at my husband's work. It's missing a few pieces, but he saw it and thought I'd want it. Are you kidding? My face lit up like a kid on Christmas morning. "Heck yea I'll take it. Thanks for rescuing it for me." I haven't restored any of these yet. I'll get around to it one day. Your restoration is so thorough and so precise. I thought you were joking when you said this was your first hand plane and first restoration. I thought there's no way. I've heard some say don't restore them and some say do. I pick do. It's a tool and it can still be used to the fullest now as it did almost 100 yrs ago. I've heard restoring it will degrade the value and I've also heard it will increase it. I feel a restored one is more appealing since it's usable. Thumbs up and new sub. Keep up the great work.

Before I got into woodworking I inherited 2 old wood block hand planes. I had them for years and gave them to someone that expressed an interest. I have been kicking my own butt for that poor decision ever since. I have watched a lot of videos that show old tool restoration, including old hand planes. This is one of the most thorough and best restorations I have seen. I sure wish I had those 2 old planes now!

I am shook up lol! That plane has hardwood knob and tote. It's got the plastic adjuster knob. Both say War era. The lever cap looks to be earlier type 11-13 (pre-1930's) The hardware holding the knobs is brass which would not be from war ear because of rationing. The body is cast with the wishbone look on the frog receiver which was produced after WW2.

You're supposed to flatten the sole with the planer assembled as it flexes a bit. If that doesn't bother you you could just as well use a belt sander or something.
