It's time for another 'Why do I build PCs with Used Xeons' video, this time matching up an E5-1660 v4 from 2016 against a brand new Rocket Lake Core i5-12600k. Which one comes out on top for workstation performance? How about gaming? And should you consider a Xeon-based system here in 2022?
But first... What am I drinking???

Turbo unlock is totally fine, it's the highlight of that platform and one reason to get it. Performance of these Xeon systems is good enough for most tasks, with ecc RAM and heaps of PCIe lanes the nice advantages.

May i ask what is ecc memory and what is for? Can i use standard rams on xeons
@dexplacid431
@dexplacid431 Год назад
@@drexter09 yes you can.Ecc memory is used on servers and has an additional memory module that checks if the info in all other memory banks goes without mistakes. (Or something like that) For example, I ran E5-2670v3 with 16 gigs of desktop ddr4 memory. But this cpu can also work with server memory too, without any problems. The most important aspect here is to avoid mixing the memory. Because ECC and standard desktop memory won't work together at the same time.
@kellyoneal5498
@kellyoneal5498 11 месяцев назад
Also, the MB must support the ECC ram... There are several kinds of ECC (ECC, ECC-reg, different voltages) with different specs- the Xeon chip itself will handle any just fine, but some mobos are finicky about some. Also can't mix different ECC types at once

Excellent ^_^ The higher resolutions like 1440p and 4k REALLY level the playing field, shifting the load to the GPU. A uniquely suited use case for an old V3/V4 Xeon might be an HTPC. Hook to an old 60Hz 4k TV, lock the FPS, and use the PCIE Lanes for some super fast IO like storage controllers for a NAS/ Media library, Faster network controllers, a spare old Quadro for video encoding etc. That being said, there are "middle of the road" options between these new 12th gens and the old Xeons. Enter, the used Ryzen. 3700x and 3900x are coming way down and would provide a price/$ balance between these two offerings. Let's say you play at 1080p high refresh (120FPS+), are on a budget, you still need multithread for other workloads, and the Xeon just can't push about 100FPS in your favorite game. A 3000 or 5000 series ryzen with cheap B450 or B550 could be looking spicy ^_^

I did the same about 16 months ago, from X79/1680v2/8x4GB DDR3 to x99 ($99)/2678v3($85)/4x8GB DDR3. Very nice upgrade, IMO. Then, when XEON prices dropped I upgraded to E5-2696v3 ($45) and 4x8GB DDR4 ($66); sold off the 2678v3 and DDR3 to get the upgrade for net $16. BIG upgrade with the 2696v3 (w/turbo unlock, of course). Will now upgrade from GTX1080Ti to RTX 2080Ti ($220)...about the only upgrade left for this system. Current setup: Huananzhi X99TF (ver.1) [BIOS TU w/Mi899 tool] E5-2696v3 [18C/36T, max turbo 3.8GHz, 145W TDP, DDR3 or DDR4 compatible; all core 3.2 Ghz, up to ~8 cores at 3.8, up to ~14 cores at 3.5] 4x8GB DDR4 3000 Corsair Vengeance GTX1080Ti (undervolted) For the money, a very capable platform.

I love this video, most tech videos do not consider older (particularly 2nd hand parts). However I think you should have included some lower end modern parts. For budget it would be nice to compare a 2nd hand i3-10105F with 2666mhz ram, and a B560 motherboard (to allow better upgrade path to 11th gen). Then as a new build alternative an i5-12400F with 3200mhz ddr4 ram. I think these will have a cost price much closer to the xeon, and have a gaming performance very close to the stock i5-12600k. I think these are much better alternatives to someone considering buying an xeon. More videos like this would be greatly appreciated.

I'm curious about the power draw of those Xeons vs the i5 system under load and idle. Also, going with DDR5 was kind of an obvious way to stack the deck price wise against the i5 system. Not a huge amount, but still. Also, would have been interesting to see a 5600 or 5600x build thrown in the mix.

Just a note: it really depends on the game. Games with simulation often use a single thread as the master. Essentially, any time frame delivery or pacing depends on CPU, there will be slow downs or stutters. Unfortunately, these issues are just plain hard to pin to titles. For the large majority of games, these CPUs are okay, but for complex RTS/sims, and some VR titles, I would avoid anything with low single thread performance.

I think there are some extra points to be considered here. The Xeon platform really has no viable path for upgrade as you're stuck with pcie 3.0 and even if you were to go for an 8 core 1680v4 you would still be lacking single core performance. Say you went with another mid tier GPU upgrade 2 years from now the 12600k would be OK but the Xeon would struggle more. You could also update to raptor lake with more IPC and cache.

meh - have all the engagement you want - the big takeaway here is really the inflated cost of both gpu and new cpu - for smb and soho the calculus is on value and without a gpu the machines are much cheaper - you don't go into power usage and this can add up with machines on 24/7 (for biz) - zen4 could change calculus simply for being so much more efficient and make roi and tco look good - for small biz punters they can get great performance for a relative pittance and never even approach pushing the envelope or have time savings be significant

Hey Jeff - cool video, and I affirm your justification for parts choices being realistic purchase options (as opposed to using a 3090ti). A quick request - could you perhaps add less transparent backdrop to presenting your benchmark results with some way of delineating rows and columns clearly, perhaps shrinking it slightly relative to the screen size so they're contained within a more clear modal? Having them run over the top of the moving video with changing colours behind etc makes it hard to read and starts to induce a headache a little bit, and the quality is quite juxtaposed compared to your high-quality set and backdrop when you're on screen.

@CraftComputing

Transcode would come down to GPU performance if you're talking about NVENC. For codecs that Intel QuickSync supports, that feature is only available on 7th Gen and newer CPUs, so it's not present on v3 or v4 CPUs. Transcode software performance is going to be similar to the MT scores from Cinebench R32, with the 12600K taking a huge win.

I mean, you hit the nail on the head there in the middle. Yeah, there may be a measurable difference. But only when you drag out the benchmarks, and use nanometer scale calipers to compare the 2 graphs. It's nice/interesting to know when one chip technically beats out another, but when it comes to my wallet, what matters is what I can see.

I am a little confused. I think that the Brodawell (v4) e5-26xx chips can't be unlocked and all the 16xx chips can go max on all cores..."turbo unlockled" within the TDP limitation (or maybe just the Haswell and Broadwell). I think if you tried to run a Broadwell with the turbo unlock microcode it wouldn't run... but I may be mistaken.

I've used a couple 2012 Mac Pros as budget gaming computers (with Windows installed). They use either a single X5690 Xeon 3.46 or dual CPU. The game framerate is worse and has noticeable framedrops when using dual CPU with 12 core/24 thread. The single CPU setup is fine.

Something I noticed but forgot to mention, you said you Turbo unlocked the system, but you are using a V4 Xeon. Those don't turbo unlock. Later, you mention also testing a V3 CPU which definitely does. Just wanted people to realize that V4 Broadwell CPUs do NOT have an exploit for Turbo Unlock. This exploit exists on E5 V3 Haswell Xeons and is somewhat unique to that generation.

I wish you had tested the 2696v4, they can be had for around 130 on eBay, have 22c44t, and have the highest single core performance of all the Xeon Broadwell CPUs however their downside is it is an OEM chip and only certain motherboards can actually use it (any HP or Dell workstation should be able to use it however!). I recently got 2 for my workstation and saw that it basically had no difference in gaming compared to my old i5-11500 (on average ~3% decrease in FPS in Minecraft with simulation distance at 24 and render distance at 64) while giving 7x the amount of cores!

Still rocking dual E5 2690v3's (2x 12c24t) in my workstation. With a 2080 it games pretty well. Sure, maxed out cpu threads are a normal sight in taskmanager while gaming, but on a Freesync display, who cares whether you get full 144fps or only 60-100 in single-player games. Saves me several grand for a dedicated gaming rig. Probably going to upgrade to a pair of E5-V4s before I switch to a newer (server-)plattform. Once you've gotten used to 80 pcie lanes and lots of pcie flash storage, consumer platforms lose their appeal regardless of single core performance.

How's the dual CPUs in gaming? How many games did you encounter that just didn't like the CPUs? I have a 2660V3 on my other system and I'm planning to double it down, I play on 4K so CPU speed is hardly any issue
@protator
@protator 2 года назад
@@JABelms There's never been any serious performance issues that'd make a game unplayable. Playing @ 3840x1200 (32:10), which is a tad more than 1440p in total pixel count I think, and everything is working fine. Not encountered a AAA title that'd drop below 60, most games run at 80 to 120 fps even when the render threads max out occasionally. But I cannot recommend investing in a dual 2011v3 system at this point. Assuming your existing platform is X99, you should either go for a 2699v3 if your current RAM is 2133, or an equivalent 26xxV4 so you can make use of your faster memory. Keep in mind that dual cpu systems, with the exception of some chinese no-name boards, all require ECC memory. Re-using your old system's memory sticks wouldn't be possible and you'd find yourself shopping for 8 overpriced slow-as-hell 2133 ecc-dimms in 2022. Most games only use a single NUMA node on my system so performance is closer to gaming on a single 2690v3 anyway. A single 18C 2699v3 on X99, let alone a 2697/98/99V4, would crush a C61x system with dual 2660V3s and cost you less money.

@protator
@protator 2 года назад
@@JABelms Imo, the only reason to go for a dual xeon system would be the total number of pci-e lanes. If you need/want more than 40 lanes in a single box then a dual 2011v3 system is the only affordable way, unless you're lucky and get your hands on an old Threadripper build for cheap. My current setup uses 38 or so lanes for storage alone. A separate single socket storage server would've been easier and cheaper, but I wanted my current workstation to be a storage monster that I could turn into a NAS next time I upgrade. So I mostly went that route because I wanted a mean dual socket system on my desk at least once in my life. I can still get enough use out of this system after I've retired it as my main workstatio, so the money wasn't really wasted, but short term two separate systems would've given me the same functionality and identical or higher performance for the same or even less money. (so yeah, I probably watched to many videos about the SR2 and SR3 as well, otherwise I don't think I'd have this silly machine on the desk right now)
