Older Portable Garage, HACK, Extend it's life by shrink wrapping it

Extend the life of your older portable garage by shrink wrapping it. It's affordable, is a stronger material and will last longer than replacement tarps. It's smooth texture repels rain and snow much better. Also the frame is much tighter with it shrink wrapped and therefore doesn't flap in the wind.

Great idea. I have 2 roundtop 12x20 portable garages. Bought both in 2018. Tarps last 1 year due to birds, squirrels and direct sunlight. This is perfect. Im in lower 48 but have a few marinas close. Will start searching today. Thanks

You nailed most of the info. My same set up but I got about 5 years out of mine before it started to leak. I'm in Northern Ontario. I cleared the snow off the roof when I could. It's the sun and the wind that really beat it up. I got a good sized tarp on sale from Canadian Tire and covered it for the winter for $18. It's junk but I think it'll last until next winter and at that price I could be doing this for the next 10 years.....but, I really like what you done to yours. Good job!

beware of shrink wrap, the difference between welding it and burning a hole is a fraction of a second, the people who apply it have a lot of experience. I tried to teach myself but just ended up wasting a lot of money on it.

After reading all these great tips here, why not shrink wrap, then cover the whole thing with cheap metal siding to protect it all....oh...wait a minute? But seriousely, great video. Next video I watch is boat shrink-wraping to see if it's diy doable.

Once I add permanent supplies such as siding, then a permit is required, which then involves an engineer $$$$$$$

I agree if you already have this tent/shed doing this would be very beneficial. However as others have stated, if you don't have it already, spend the $700-800 on a prefabbed shed or buy the lumber and build your own. Good tutorial of what you had done tho and thank you for it, I have one that was damaged in a hurricane and this makes sense for me to do, especially sense I'm on the coast and there are boat storage lots EVERYWHERE and I can shop around for the best price.

If I did this, it is considered a garage or a permanent structure, and then the local town gets involved, with an engineer, etc etc Nothing but hassles and extra money. This is why we did a "portable" garage.

You can buy that stuff and DIY. you just need to get a heat source same thing that they use a weed burner set on though I think would work it may have a diverter but you can build that too diffuser like with multiple Jets I don't remember but I looked that one time and you can do it yourself for sure a lot cheaper

Terrible idea to put insulation between the layers. It would just hold moisture and create other issues. As it is it may hold moisture between the layers, so I'm curious to hear how this works in the longer term in that respect

I bought many Extreme HD Harbor Freight tarps. They all Frey at the linings and dissolve to paper thin when exposed to direct sunlight/wind! Used them to cover my roof, and tarps were secured down properly. Lasted maybe 2 seasons here in Missouri.

Pierre, it’s not a conventional “Tempo” that you put up seasonally in your driveway. Yes, Tempos have to come down after a certain date in the Spring. This Canadian Tire shelter, however, is in the fella’s back yard as a shed, which can stay up all year, depending on your town’s codes & ordinances, or Home Owners Association. My girlfriend had to put up a traditional wooden shed with siding in Dorval.

It would have been perfect, except a friend tried to help out this winter and remove the snow and ice after a big storm. He didn't realize that he cut/tore the wrap (not being careful) and of course the heavy storms winds shredded it in those two places.
@jeimmortal
@jeimmortal 2 года назад
Very nice, except the color! Do they have a neutral color? I couldn’t stand that color for myself and if my neighbor had something that big that color I wouldn’t want to have to look at it. I painted my pop up tent with a durable deck paint I got in the county recycling bin and it looked so much better than the faded color it was.

How long did it last?
@kathyandrick
@kathyandrick 10 месяцев назад
It lasted almost 3 years with no issues, but due to my error of putting a few holes in it (removing snow load), we had to start throwing a tarp over it in the 4rth year. I should have a few more years left and then will have to completely recover.
@kylecarrington8989

@@kathyandrick why is your opinion of two things: foam lining the pressure points of my main product cover when i build it. And #2 instead of shrink wrapping it, just buying a secondary loose tarp and using as a double coverage
@kathyandrick
@kathyandrick 10 месяцев назад
Adding foam lining to the pressure points certainly wouldn't hurt (not something we did and never had problems there). After putting up your first portable garage, adding a secondary loose tarp right away would be a great idea. @@kylecarrington8989

So, about $200 initial coat of tarp storage....then another $500 or so more dollars.....it might be better to invest in a more sturdy structure from an building material store, are a business that actually makes portable buildings.
@retiredoldsarge5938
@retiredoldsarge5938 5 месяцев назад
you paid like 2,800 dollars to have it shrink wrapped.. You caould have built a real wood shed forless than that and it would still be there. How long did the shrink wrap job last.. I am sure it lated less then a real shed would have. Also good heavy duty tarp over the original would extend the life for years to and cost less than 50 bucks.
@kathyandrick
@kathyandrick 5 месяцев назад
$2800? It only cost me $100 and lasted far longer, many years more than tarps that last only a couple of years. Here, building anything permanent (with wood) would involve the additional expensive of permits, engineers, etc.
