A short hike on December 22, 2018 in the Boyd Tract of Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve, NC. This small park unit is located in the middle of historic Southern Pines surrounded by homes and horse farms. The smallest of the three tracts in the state preserve protects the oldest living longleaf pine trees in the world. The only hiking trail is the Round Timber Trail, but this park is crisscrossed by many horse trails. The Boyd Tract is small so even if you get lost you won't go far until you hit a road.
Beginning at the stately Weymouth Center for the Arts & Humanities I accidentally zoomed right by the 2nd oldest longleaf pine and began searching for the oldest off-trail. Even though the general locations are denoted on the free map, neither tree is marked and it turns out super old longleaf pines don't look much different from very old longleaf pines. Eventually I ran into a hiker who knew the location and showed me the oldest longleaf pine. It was beat up, years of fires and storms have taken the top and many branches. But you can tell it was old, ~470 years old in fact. The bark looked scarred and the highest limbs were thicker than any limbs on neighboring trees. The 2nd oldest longleaf pine I could easily spot when I looped around and knew what I was looking for. It was a far more impressive tree. Huge trunk, diameter around 3.5 feet, and had a much more impressive canopy of limbs.
Distance - 2.6 miles
Elevation gain - 260 feet
Time - 1 hour and 20 minutes

The last few years I've seen a lot of plots of long leafs being planted in the South Alabama. They are beautiful. It's hard to imagine traveling through the millions of acres of these pines.

I know of a few extremely old and huge long and short leafs in Pensacola Florida near scenic hwy in a narrow steep ravine and Hoover Al along cahaba river

They may be old but these are officially documented as the oldest longleaf pines

Longleaf reach “maturity” around 150 when they stop growing vertically and start extending branches horizontally instead. Easy way to tell the difference between old and just large longleaf

Very interesting video. I live in Georgia and have a lot of longleafs where I live. There are HUGE loblolly and longleaf pines near mossy creek which is a creek mainly secluded from everywhere and has never been logged. There are also giant tulip poplars that are very thick and tall that grow in the shade. I wonder if some of the ones here are one of the oldest tulips or longleaf. I don’t know but it is very cool to look at when walking!

The white bands trees have protected woodpecker nest. They clear the brush when the area will have a controlled burn.

I’m out west, I’m always interested to learn about different trees! Those two have been through a lot! 👍👍🥾🥾

Yeah honestly younger ones are taller and more impressive, hurricanes snap off the tops of longleaf pines very easily

@@bigzach322 That’s too bad about the tops of the older ones. Somewhere I was looking up about our big trees, Douglas Fir trees, and the Forest Service had a series of silhouettes of trees as they got older, showing the older ones would have wind and limb damage... the old growth ones here are maybe 400-600 years old. Maybe it’s the same with lots of trees. 👍👍 Take care - thanks 🥾🥾

@@JenniferLupine In the mountains the oldest tulip poplars are 400-500 years but they're hard to find since most of the East Coast has been logged. However, the bald cypresses in the coastal swamps are some of the oldest trees in the world. I'd like to see them some day. www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/north-carolina-bald-cypresses-among-worlds-oldest-trees-180972134/

I've actually visited here many times, never knew about the trees...no idea.... hence read a little more maybe! Anyways it's a beautiful place, I especially recommend the hike through the lowlands, marsh/bog, area of the park. They have built an amazing wooden walkway above the marsh. Very relaxing, easy hiking through this lil park.

Very cool, I'll have to come film there sometime. Have you hiked where the old Rockafellar Masion is?! Last time I was there they were burning pine and clearing debris from a hurricane or storm, real cool!

Hey buddy, nice to see you enjoying the pines and the area. By the way, both guesses were good, but Weymouth is actually pronounced “Way-muhth”, rhymes with “doth”. (Only word I could think of that rhymes with the “muhth” in Weymouth.) Enjoy man. I can show you a longleaf pine in the county which is 460 years old.
@zacharyriley4122
@zacharyriley4122 3 года назад
Oh and by the way, a 400 year old longleaf is way, WAY huger than a little 100 year old tree. And they don’t even remotely resemble a 100 year old longleaf. The bark isn’t the same color either. The entire appearance of the tree changes upon entering latter stages of maturity.

Hopefully you got to actually visit Weymouth park proper. The Boyd tract is not the actual park and is totally separate.

The distortion that you mention at the top of the mature pines is a natural part of the LLP life span. The LLP reaches its maximum height at 70-100 years old. Then for the rest of it's life, it will develop a crown, which you mention as "stunted growth." There is some good info on LLP on this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qJWG7raBlT8.html.
