The translation of Icknield Way into "Ox Way" seems to be more historically correct as such trackways for driving cattle to the nearest or largest market towns can be found all over Europe - I live next to one just north of Hamburg in Germany, an ancient ox track originating in Denmark that led to the great ancient and medieval market towns in Germany. But apart from that, isn't it good to see Tony and Phil together again in a documentary ! 😋😋😋

@a.westenholz4032
@a.westenholz4032 4 года назад
@@electrictroy2010 That may simply be a coincidence- of their tribal name sounding similar to the road name and having nothing to do with it. I have had that happen to me too often in linguistics before not to be cautious. However, since the meaning of the name of Iceni itself might possibly also derive from the old Welsh for oxen it is possible that the two are related. So whether the road was named after the tribe that was named after oxen or whatever, or was just named after oxen in an area coincidentally held by a tribe that might also be named after oxen are equally possible.

In retrospect I had my eye more on the future than the past back then with the moon landing and the new colour TVs and watching Top of the Pops etc. I was surrounded by history and in all honesty took it for granted. Extraordinary documentary. To be able to walk in the path of ancestors, is to be able to live history. Hands on. Wish us Americans, had the same respect for history as the British. Here in America...we just tear down anything old and replace it. What makes Britian, (and Europe for that matter), so fascinating, is how they take care of their old buildings. It is just classy. Respectful. America has few relics from times past. Here...we live in a disposable world. I love the charm of Europe and Asia. Something America...has no concept of. A shame really.

Quote from "The Story Girl," by L. M. Montgomery: "I do like a road because you're always wondering what's at the end of it." (May be not quite verbatim.)

It's my understanding that at least part of Robert Frost's poem 'The Road Not Taken' was partly inspired by the poets ramblings with Thomas. This may be entirely apocryphal but the two became friends when Frost lived in England.

Roger H Werner It’s actually true. I recently read a biography of Frost,. He was greatly influenced by Thomas when a youngish Frost lived in England for a few years.

@@fleetskipper1810it doesn't surprise me. I've been reading Frost for more than half a century but I only discovered Thomas quite recently. Frost's work is very much like Thomas'. Thomas wrote a poem that reminds of Frost's The Road Not Taken. If truth be told, that poem probably had more ingluence on my life than any other single phenomenon. Whenever I had a choice I nearly always took the choice that was the most unpopular or least selected. Not for any particular reason other than the iconoclast in me. I just liked being different, and different never made me afraid. It's tragic that Thomas died in a damn silly war. Imagine what he might have produced later in life. I just bought his book about the Icknield Way. Haven't read it yet. Wonderful writer.

Britain is SUCH a beautiful country. So much history...So many visible ties to the past. I've been there several times and wouldn't mind living there. I remember being SHOCKED when I saw the small copula that marked the location where King John signed the Magna Carta. OMG...Such a monumental spot! BUT.....No bright lights. No Glitzy government building for tourists. Just a small copula on the other side of a wide field. But then again, that was just "recent history" for Britain...wasn't it? There's just too much history in Britain to mark that locations with anything MORE than that small copula.

I wished they had explained why the flint at this depth was better than the flint found in such quantity on top of the ground.

Tony and Phil together again. I so miss the old time Team gang. I didn't find the show until after it was over but I have watched every single episode many multiple times. They wouldn't know me from Adam but I feel like they're all my friends.

Very enjoyable, I look forward to more in the series. I've walked the Ridgeway, Wessex Ridgeway, North and South Downs Ways, but never the Icknield Way. It joins the Ridgeway near Tring, or there's a link path starting there. If I could knock that off I'd have walked from Lyme Regis to Hunstanton but alas I now live 8,000 miles away in Oregon.

Regarding dowsing, in my tweens my father taught me how to find metal objects buried in the ground with a pair of copper rods bent just like that of the guy in this vid. One in each hand. I was skeptical when I asked him what he was doing, and he offered to show me. I thought he was having one over on me. Nope. I had taken an interest in his occasional metal detecting romp around the property, because digging up old stuff was damn fun, so he decided to show me dowsing out of nowhere. It absolutely worked. Although a good metal detector can often find stuff a bit deeper in the soil, a pair of copper rods was much cheaper and more portable. Dug up a lot of old beer can pull tabs, pieces of scrap metal, and a few coins via dowsing, though.
