Today we visited the oldest functioning wooden church in the World, St Andrews in Greensted Essex, due to it appearing in Simon Jenkins 'England's Thousand Best Churches' book. As we approached it, there was something familiar about it and I quickly recalled that I'd seen a RU-vid video by Terry Miles about it (see details below). Still, it was a beautiful day and it is always intriguing to look inside these beautiful, historic places. Join me from your sofa. ‪@HimInChurch‬

Lovely video, we visited today!! The bit you thought was drainage is actually a 'lepers squint' that lepers could look through and receive a blessing via, without entering. You can see it from the inside from the pews

Oh great! I must have missed the lepers squint on the inside squinting through my camera! Thanks for the helpful info. 🤗

I heard 20 years back that the oldest wooden church was in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Unfortunately an italian building corps gained land to build on and they just ploughed it down, never asked, just did it. By the timer the council found out, too late, gone. Twas not part of the land they bought.

Both interesting and sad. Thanks for sharing this. It’s amazing how some of these buildings last as long as they do and a testament to the builders. Modern buildings seem to occasionally have problems from the outset (I read recently that a newly built estate of houses had to be pulled down before they had even been occupied! It wasn’t anything to do with planning permissions either!).

Very beautiful, but you neglected to tell us when it was first built. Visited many stave churches in Norway which are not as beautiful, but may well be older.

Hi. Thanks for your comments. I'm not an expert on churches just an enthusiast, sharing the interiors for those who may not be able to visit these places, themselves. I usually provide links for people to delve deeper, should they be inclined - one such is the link to greatenglishchurches.co.uk which has extensive information. I'd love to see some of Norway's wooden churches - they look superb! Thanks for stopping by.

I can't understand who would carpet such an historic church .it loses it atmosphere and sound when singing or walking on the ancient floor

I know what you mean. Maybe it was uneven and they sought to level it out?

You need to stop highlighting these churches especially wooden ones they might be targeted as they have been in France

Thanks for your feedback. My feeling is that the sort of people who might tune into my YT channel are most likely interested in history, and the artefacts within, rather than having an inclination to desecrate them. I seek to encourage those who have an interest or infirmity, to visit (even just virtually) and maybe donate towards their upkeep. Have a good day.

I will, of course, bear yours (and anyone elses) feedback in mind. I know there are bad sorts out there (I've met a few of them!). However, I also know that most people have good intentions. I haven't been publishing anything that isn't already freely available online (The maps, for example, are from google). If anyone has malign intentions they will, no doubt, express them (some Church wardens have told me of breakings etc - this is before I have filmed!). My sense is that I mustn't deny those of goodwill, an opportunity to view some of these beautiful places. Bless you for your good intentions in forewarning me. Have a good day.
