Loved it. The meandering, dreamlike quality of the final act hit just right. The wonderful use of somewhat archaic language gives the novel a fairy tale-feel. Disclaimer: read the german translation, which is just fantastic.

since you're into Polish lit, a small trivia for you: Bora Chung, an award winning Korean writer, is a big Lem fan and she's been very into Polish and Russian literature. there are some intertextual elements in her works that are influenced by Polish lit and folklore :)

This novel begs a reread. It's incredible. I'm going to read The Magic Mountain and come back and reread The Empusium. I'm very curious to see how it changes Olga's book to have knowledge of Mann's work. I'm not sure if I liked this one or Drive Your Plow more. I'll have to have a think on it. The author's note dropped my jaw. Immaculate.

I heared Tokarczuk is closer to Elfriede Jelinek than to Magic Mountain However, maybe you should read both 🤪

I read 'Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead' a few years ago and I was a bit underwhelmed to be honest. I thought it was good, but not that good, so I wasn't that interested in reading more. But now that i know it's quite different from her other books, I'm looking forward to reading something else.

I'm not into books really and I never heard of Olga but based on what you've told me about her literary style I definitely want to dive into her works. 4:23 WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELL. yous voice might be Welsh and nasally but you certainly made up for it there brah. BRAH! So I preorders on Amazon before the end of the video and my boi right at the end gives it a five out of ten 😡🤣🤣🤣

I finally finished this last night! I really liked a lot about it (the sense of place, isolation of the characters, Mieczysław's journey) but, for me, it didn't really cohere as a whole, especially with how quick the ending was. I also thought about the recipes in The Sea, The Sea lol I.. am one of the people who has only read Drive Your Plow (I didn't like it very much), what should I read next from her? I also now really want to read The Magic Mountain!

Yeah it is not that great but it actually did give me the Drive your plow vibes a bit. As her first post-Nobel book I guess it could have been worse :p I've read The Magic Mountain and there aren't that many connections really imo.

@@KDbooks haha MM is fun!!! I really enjoyed it (apart from some discussions which I didn't really get and bored me) so definitely worth a read! Also, Tokarczuk looooves that book so there's that.
