Olive Biofilter instructional video

I invented the Olive biofilter and this is my instructional video showing how to set it up. The Olive is the world's first floating biofilm filter for organic pools. It cleans by nurturing a huge colony of beneficial microorganisms removing nutrients from the water to suppress algal blooms. As part of Olive's natural filtration system, it also oxygenates the water and can grow edible plants, like watercress. It is animal friendly and only takes water from the surface so as not to disturb beneficial filter feeding animals, such as daphnia. It is powered by a low energy (24W) remote compressor so there is no electricity near the pool.
I just thought I'd share this film, in case it is of interest.
Best wishes, David

I don't know if you know this, but I am going to tell it to you any way. It will be an interesting video to show. You can use almost any plant ( not only water plant ) if you provide oxygen from below. It will be interesting thing to see a small bush floating in a olive. Plus, bushes are great when it comes to extracting nutrients ... Basically the more levees the plant has, more nutrients it extracts from the water.

I love the idea but I gotta ask - judging by the video only, the performance of such large filter is kind of low, it's gonna take ages before it turns over any reasonable amount of water, or am I missing something?

@barbarusbloodshed6347
@barbarusbloodshed6347 2 года назад
I am no expert on the matter of swimming ponds, but as someone who's had planted aquariums and ponds for about 25 years and stopped using filters in his aquariums 6 years ago, I can tell you that you need a minimum size of planted area, in relation to the amount of water in the pond, that is. So if you want a large body of water, you'll have to plan with a very large planted area. The basic principle is just that the ecosystem you create has to be able to handle everything by itself, without any filtration, chemicals, etc. BTW, I'm also planning on building a swimming pond at some point, and I will just work around the large planted area by adding floating plants. I know they won't bother me while swimming and they have the advantage that they quickly adapt to any situation - if there are tons of nutrients ("dirt") in your water, you will see their growth explode, when the amount of nutrients goes back so does the number of floating plants. And whenever you feel like there are too many of them in the water you can just fish them out the same way you would with some leaves floating on the surface. Anyway, using floating plants it should be possible to greatly reduce the planted area for the pond.

I wonder if there are any experts out there who can tell me what the differences are between the Ponds this guy builds and the fish/swimming ponds that they seem to be doing in the USA? Namely "Greg the pond guy" and the people who work with and for him. They seem to have a monopoly on swim/fish ponds in the USA, from what I can tell. The ponds seem to be the same, but also different in the way they're built and the filtration systems or lack there of. Any thoughts on which is better as far as build, materials and filtration? I have noticed the USA (seemingly mainly rock/gravel base) ponds are also built quite differently. I definitely prefer the look of the rock/waterfall types of ponds, however most of those are in suburban back yards. So they can use whatever they like. These ponds from this guy seem to be more... Sedate (for lack of a better word!) perhaps because they're all in rural settings and whilst they're not my favourite, they definitely suit the look of the properties better. They tend to use more native grasses and wood similar to the look of the surrounding area. I'm wondering if his lack of rocks is so it fits in with the area better or is it because of how different his filtration system is? Thoughts? Sorry, this turned out so much longer than I intended and I apologise if I didn't use the correct terminology. I just hope you understand what I'm getting at. I must add, I'm not knocking either build, I love them both, I just wonder why they're built and filtered so different and if one is more effective at filtration than the other? . Cheers. Ps: These ponds seem to have a lot more silt. Any ideas why?
@cobre7717
@cobre7717 2 года назад
Us style ponds use waterpumps to move the water up and over the filtermedia and waterfall. That uses far more energy than a bubble lift and plant living eco filter.
@unknownhuman5507
@unknownhuman5507 14 дней назад
The USA ponds consume more energy, therefore you can have a waterfall. David's ponds are designed to have a low energy consumption, mainly a 24w air compressor which move the water from filtration area into the pond. That's the only difference I can think of. If money is not a problem for you, I would go with the waterfall, but if you want to have a nice swimming pond (pool) with a low energy cost, then David's idea is your answer. I hope I made my response clear.

I don't find that to be the case. I've listened to many of his videos and I've gained a lot of practical knowledge from him regarding natural ponds. He shares a wealth of information for free. He has videos which show very easy to understand concepts to help you understand how it all works. For instance on how to make various different types of very inexpensive air bubble pumps and skimmers, and showing scaled down models using aquarium fish tanks, etc.
