Olive Press TV travels down to Alicante for Las Hogueras de San Juan 2019 in Alicante.
The city holds the biggest Hogueras festival in all of Spain, which takes place on June 24, on the eve of Saint John the Baptist's birth.
The bible quotes John's father, Zacharias, saying the Baptist would be a 'light to all those who live in darkness' and so the Saint's birth is commemorated by bonfires in Catholic countries.
The festival has morphed to include massive sculptures that critique politics, society and culture, and both tourists and locals come every year to get get soaked by the same firemen who struggle to stop the city going up in flames.
