Olive tree winter care and olive plant winter protection. #olive #olivetree #olivetrees
Ensure the olive tree has good drainage.
If you can move to a sheltered position out of prevailing winds.
Avoid the possibility of the root ball remaining water logged and freezing.
If there is a sharp prolonged freezing spell forecast consider wrapping the head of the olive tree in horticultural fleece.
avoid a sudden change in conditions - bringing an olive plant into a centrally heated house may cause the bark to crack.
avoid watering and feeding over winter unless it is covered in which case water sparingly as necessary to prevent drying out.

Excellent video Mark. I just bought a 7ft olive tree in a 35L pot with 4” trunk so it’s pretty well established. We have harsh winters in Yorkshire. If I put it under a large tree for winter. Would that suffice?

Great video. Ive just re potted 4 very large olives in pots. The previous gardener i took over from had half a house of bricks and paving slabs in them all. The roots were not in contact with any soil at the base! So i repotted in good, well drained soil and they're looking better already. Thanks for making this video. There isn't a lot out there on this topic.

@@MarksHouseandGardenUK Hi Mark, Yes I’m down in Surrey near Dorking. Had a cold winter last year so wrapped the pots in fleece. Didn’t do the heads so maybe should have as didn’t look great in spring 2022.

Great video mark. I didn't bother protecting mine last winter, they seemed like they made it ok, although it was a pretty mild winter. I also keep them quite close to the house, so that probably helps too. I think I will probably only protect mine this year if we get any nights below -5°C, which is quite rare in my location.

Thank you for this video Mark. The old saying goes when nature is abundant with wild fruit were in for a hard winter. Well this year I've not seen so much wild fruit in abundance since the 1970s So this year will be a test to see if this old wives tale is true or not. So I think its best to be prepared. Thank you so much for your ongoing informative and interesting videos and for sharing with us your knowledge.

Sounds like you've had a wonderful harvest. Next year I'm excited about the prospect of making some chutneys and preserves. I have a glut of apples and damsons. Next year I'll have tomatoes (thank you). Fingers crossed your olive has a happy winter 😊

Hi again Mark, wow those 2 little olives you rescued are doing so well! Your border with the 4 trees is so pretty, mine is about the same size as yours. Good to hear you think they’ll survive even if you don’t cover them. Im in Essex around a US zone 8 equivalent and we haven’t had a frost yet, I think I’m going to chance it and not cover, unless of course we get unusually cold. I’ll keep an eye on the weather. Im off now to find out how and when to prune. Great advice!!

Hi! So is your Essex in the States? We have an essex in the UK. I will do another pruning video in the spring. My general rule is not to prune if it is not growing season. But apart from that I am quite brave. Do use clean sharp tools. The two olive trees which i gave a very hard prune in the video have come back very strong. I will post an update. They have responded very well. Thanks for watching and subsribing. Mark

Great video with lots of clear and helpful information. Your olive trees are so lovely. What variety/type of olive tree do you have and what zone are you in? I am thinking your variety may be more tolerant of colder temps outside with your protection. I've heard conflicting information on the Arbequina olive trees that I purchased. I am in USA zone 5b and currently have them in planters. Last winter I did bring them inside but maybe I should have left them on the covered porch or the 3-season room so they can start getting used to some type of cold temps. Several YT videos state that olive trees need a fair amount of cold temps. 🌱

How often should they be watered during the winter?

Hi. Mine are in the ground mainly. I just don't water them at all in the winter. In pots outside I would they should get enough rain to get by. Mark

If drainage is critical ( on the smaller potted Morrison olive plants) is it worth covering the gravel mulch with a plastic covering to allow the rain to run off and not saturate the pot ?
@MarksHouseandGardenUK
@MarksHouseandGardenUK 2 года назад
Good point. If it was still in its original morrisons pot i would move it to a sheltered position out of the rain and keep and eye on it. I've repotted my two and they have very good drainage now. Your approach i think would also be helpful. Mark

I was going to ask a similar question. I potted some medium sized olive trees in the spring 2023 but didn’t know how important drainage is. They are doing really well. The pot they are in has a hole at the bottom but by the sounds of your video, this isn’t enough. Would you recommend putting gravel/mulch on the top and covering with plastic over the winter and repotting in the spring or repotting now with a better drainage system? Thanks

Hi Mark! Thank you so much for all your olive trees videos. I’ve watched them all :) Could I ask you for advise? Would it be okay if I keep my recently reported Olive tree inside the house in a bright space with 2-3h direct sunlight? Or would you really advice to keep it outside, even if that means less sunlight and of course a considerably colder spot? I would love to keep it inside, as I do want to have it inside all year round, but I keep seeing the recommendation to put it out for a few months in winter… Thanks again, I’m really enjoying your channel!
@MarksHouseandGardenUK
@MarksHouseandGardenUK 2 года назад
Hi Mili, if it was mine I would keep it ourdoors because I think they appreciate a cold spell over winter. However, I am a great believer in experimenting. Why not try it and keep an eye on it? Watch the leaves for discolouration and avoid overwatering (if it is not growing and transpiring it will require little water). Finally, beware a sudden change in temperature and central heating, the trunk may dry out and crack. I'd love to know how you get on if you don't mind. Best wishes. Mark
@miliseiffert
@miliseiffert Год назад
@@MarksHouseandGardenUK Thank you so much for the answer Mark!! So far it's still inside... but indeed I think the evidence is suggesting me to take it out for a few months, as I'd like it to grow, so I guess I'll move it tomorrow. I love the spot it has inside so I don't rule out doing a bit of both! I'll keep you posted then ;) All the best!

Hi Mark, are we still supposed to water the olive tree throughout the winter months? Love your videos by the way. Thank you.
@MarksHouseandGardenUK
@MarksHouseandGardenUK 2 года назад
Hi Jacqueline. Thank you. Where is it located and is it in a pot? I would only water an olive during the winter if it was under cover. Ordinarily i think the rain would easily be sufficient. Does that make sense? Thanks again. Mark

Mark, we are in Northampton. My two beautiful olive trees are in the ground and have done brilliantly over winter for several years. The weather has been so wet. They seem to be shedding more leaves than I remember. Is there anything I should do? Please help!
@MarksHouseandGardenUK
@MarksHouseandGardenUK 9 месяцев назад
Hi there. Sorry to hear you're worried about your olives. If it's any consolation mine have often dropped leaves through the damp winters. My approach has simply been to hold my nerve then do some pruning in the spring which seems to stimulate new leaf growth. Do you think the ground is waterlogged? Mark

@MarksHouseandGardenUK
@MarksHouseandGardenUK 8 месяцев назад
Hi Bill, I suppose you could, I mean it's supposed to be a good time for moving shrubs and planting them bare roots. Personally, if you can, I'd wait another month or so. That way we'll be nearer to warmer weather when the roots can grow and repair. Mark
