Giant bluefin tuna have become commonplace once more in the southern waters of the United Kingdom. Fortunately, the resource has been ring fenced for a catch and release tagging scientific fishery, with 25 boats approved to target these fantastic fish. You can find more information on the CHART programme that oversees this fishery here: hookpoint.co.uk/chart-tuna-tagging-uk/
The technique used to catch these tuna is via a spreader bar, which is a series of decoy lures making a lot of disturbance on the waters surface, followed by the one lure with a hook in, the 'stinger', which is always the lure that is attacked. This video features Oliver Jenkinson catching his first ever bluefin tuna aboard Crusader Charters, sailing out of Plymouth. Oliver is more familiar with freshwater fishing, though his largest fish to date was a 60lb blue shark on a holiday in Cornwall. To take on a blue fin tuna in a stand up fight with limited big fish experience is a big ask, but Oliver performed admirably with the expert advice on hand around him from the skipper Kev and crewman Tony. Well done Ollie!
