Nice details about the cleaning steps, thank you. I have a question about typewriter springs: In my Lettera 32 one of the key return springs is missing (as in frame at 1:37). Any tips as to sourcing various typewriter springs? (Apart from keeping parts machines for spares)
Yes that is where I get my springs, old stripped typewriters. There is no source for these really I know mcmaster.com has springs, but can't just order 1. An IBM selectric has 100's of springs in all lengths, sizes and strengths
@@phoenixtypewriter2136 Thank you for responding and the tips. McMaster is a monster source -- it's good for looking up what's out there. It tried browsing there once for screws, but ended up finding some on eBay. I did find Selectric pack of replacement springs on Ebay, which looked close. Have you tried making your own springs (from guitar strings for example, as mentioned online)?
Can you clean these typewriter keys with 70% Isopropyl Rubbing? I though WD-40 harms these typewriter keys. Or should i just spray WD-40 on them and then rub them of later? Thanks! Great video! 😊
I have been a typewriter technician for a lot of years. NEVER use WD-40 on any office machine. When you spray it on it will work fine. Then after about a week it really gums things up. Anything that is spring driven will slow down or completely stop.
I use WD-40 to prevent staining from lacquer thinner splashes, protect paint & plastic, wipe off when done WD-40 is not a lubricant, at least not for precision typewriters Yes alcohol is ok to clean type slugs (faces)
Hi Duane, do you have a favorite typewriter to work on, manual or electric?! one that gives you the Least guff, one you are most excited to see it walk in the door? Or do they all sort of blend together now? You have so many useful, helpful and great videos and I just wonder everytime, are there any you are just like, "oh no!" And some that elicit the exact opposite reaction?
Smith Corona 5 series from about 1955, electric version from 1959 is awesome too Olympia SM-9 are nice and accessible, Royal O model & QDL, can be tough going, hard to disassmble, poor access to anything
@@phoenixtypewriter2136 that is quite the list! Love this. I hope you get to work on the ones you love more often than not. Thanks for the great and mighty helpful information you put out into the world to save all the machines.
hi, ive had this model for 7 years, i found it in a charity shops for only £1 and when i bought it was all thick with dust, ive been scared to clean it but now am taking time to do so. how do you take the bottom off of it?
Hi, I'm Simone and I'm Italian, I follow you with great enthusiasm. Excuse me so much, can you tell me the names of the products you use to degrease and lubricate? I'm new and I'm trying to restore an Olivetti Lettera 22. Thank you very much
Simple Green for plastic parts, Lacquer thinner for greasy parts, followed with Nutrol cleaner/lube www.ebay.com/itm/MG-Chemicals-401B-340G-Nutrol-Control-Cleaner-340g-12-Oz-Aerosol-Can/251912832391?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908131621%26meid%3Dc9f3cef361e54a85a4ec0450f24e1585%26pid%3D100678%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D3%26mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D192408184165%26itm%3D251912832391%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2380057&_trksid=p2380057.c100678.m3607&_trkparms=pageci%3A2a524e52-6307-11eb-afd8-c2a7e9ea751a%7Cparentrq%3A53b04d381770ac3d2a8ddb06fffcef60%7Ciid%3A1
I don't like rust . . . red oil and wire brush, trouble is access. I never have use "rust removal" products, well when I did they did do much, again most lack of access to rusty parts.
Hi! I have a Remington Rand Remette (looks 1939 based off the serial number) and everything works great, there’s no sticky keys or anything my only problem that I’ve found is that the carriage doesn’t move to the next letter each time I type. It will if I angle it with something under the right side using gravity, though. Backspace works fine and there’s no other problems besides it’s pretty dusty. don’t know if any of that makes sense sorry. I don’t really know much about typewriters as I’m 14 and grew up with newer technology I apologize if my description isn’t helpful lol. Does anyone know what the problem is?
I keep finding analogies between typewriter & cars, Neglect, lack of respect ? Check this dirty car, makes ya wonder how ? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zfWXbQ4okEc.html
