In this video, I react to Olivia Rodrigo's debut album Sour. Olivia Live Reactions + Tiny Desk performance is now available on Patreon. Jim's Discord: / discord Patreon: www.patreon.co.... Jim's Twitch: / jimgameslive
NYD sample is intentional. She's a huge swiftie. I believe Taylor was given writing credits. Olivia is one of a group of 20 something's who grew up loving Taylor and now have their own careers. Sabrina Carpenter and Conan Gray are others. They all credit Taylor as being a huge influence on them and have similar lyric styles.
She's not an artist who is trying to sound beyond her years. The lyricism is honestly young and sometimes juvenile and I think that's what makes it relatable. Everyone is a teenager at some point in their lives. We've all been there, we all get it.
I absolutely love that Sour album just took me back to my moody years and had me screaming all my ugly feelings and teenage angst lol. Like yeah it's petty and childish, but almost everyone has felt it secretly. It just feels good to be open about it. It's feelings. Can’t be helped. And God, she knows how to make a bridge
This album is a living masterpiece. She succeeded at a young age to make us feel related to these love songs, these different stages : anger, sadness, confusion, frustration.. We all truly have similar emotions when it comes to relationships, when we’re hurt and we’re confused about something.. Olivia is incredible
You can't listen to this album without crying 😢 especially the last song. Yes Olivia, we are ok, after listening to this Amazing Heartbreaking album. No Skips. Just wish she released Jealousy Jealousy, Favorite Crime and Happier as singles.
Ugh doesn’t that last one make your heart ache?! Like owwwww….Olivia…I was feeling so vindicated by getting to relive my sophomore and junior years of high school with those songs…and then you just rip my heart out at the last minute. This album is arguably “adolescent”…but holy shit…it perfectly captures the gravity of the situation when I was 15-16 years old.
Phew.. As someone who has been severely emotionally abused by a family member for many years, one step forward and three steps back made me cry today. I didn’t cry over it when I was playing the album on repeat back when it came out but damn. That hit hard. Not saying her situation is similar to mine but for me, with my narcissist you never know who you’re going to get each day. The nice person or the evil person and when she said “which lover will I get today? Will you walk me to the door or send me home crying” and that’s exactly what I think every time I answer my phone or going to my abusers house. (Im their caretaker and I know i should leave them but they’re old and sick and won’t be around that much longer so I stick it out) just Wow..
Just so you know, no one would blame you for not sticking it out. You deserve safety & peace first & foremost. You seem like a great person and I wish you well.❤❤❤
i love that you brought up emotional cheating because so many people disregard it and don't consider it real but my in my opinion (as someone who went through this) it's kinda worse when someone emotionally cheats on you cause it messes up with your head like Olivia showcased it through this album
"It's so sweet how she's not villainizing the other girl." You're right, but unfortunately that didn't stop the internet from tearing the poor girl apart over nothing. I would highly recommend listening to Because I Liked a Boy by Sabrina Carpenter.
Fun fact: Brutal was the last song she wrote in the album. She was supposed to released EP first but decided to make a whole album. DRIVERS LICENSE was her debut single that broke records. It’s also the reason why she decided to released an album. 1 step forward and 3 step back, interpolated NYD. So SB won’t get any penny from her. Deja vu was fictional story that she and Dan wrote for this song. She wanted to write a song about her frustration on how a guy do the shit that he did from his previous girl. Happier was the song she wrote first in this album. It’s the song Dan (her producer) discover our Olivia. After hope ur ok, you can hear Olivia and Dan talking about starting the whole album because they don’t like it. Then you’ll hear the beginning cords of brutal. She wrote this between salt lake and California when she was 16-17 years old. She have docu movie about this album.
when this album first came out and taylor was given credits, everyone freaked out, but it was for the new years day sample indeed :-) and when it came out many professionals also came out and educated the masses that it is technically an "interpolation" hahah
I really love how you listen to the lyrics and what the artist is saying with the music in each song and in the album as a whole story. Your reactions are so enjoyable to listen to! 💜
Don't feel bad. I'm late to the party. I haven't gotten to hear the whole album either. My ADHD just keeps me skipping around so these reactions videos help a lot. My "favorite crime" is GORGEOUS! Olivia's voice gives me loads of dopamine.
olivia is a huge swiftie, thats why she wrote a song using new years day, she said her and her producer dan tried to change it, but the song wasnt feeling the same, so she asked taylor's permission, gave her and jack their credits and interpolated the song so scooter wouldn't get any money from it
I think something that Olivia, Taylor and some others share is the ability to catch so many types of people in their music, I relate to so many things even though I lived completely different situations
I love her genreless and that she rocks all of them. I love that she was so smart to start a Car before Drivers licences and turn it off after hope ur ok ran out, I would have not caught that back then if the comment sections wouldn't have told me that. I can't wait what kinda (Love-)Story/ies she'll tell us on GUTS. I mean the most likely I could come up with besides it is working in multiple ways is "SPILL YOUR GUTS" and that could literally be everything from another Loving Teen or not loving one to what's has been going on in the world.
Interesting you mention how Drivers License was similar to Vampire. DL was her debut single for Sour. Just like Vampire is her debut single for Guts. Also, I love Hope Your Ok was added, even though its so out of theme to the other songs. It was the last song I heard from her and I think it made me cry the most. Assuming the boy and girl referenced were actual people she had known, it was her way of telling them she still remembers them and cares about them, if they hear this song they will know it is them. BUT it's also in a way of letting anyone who listens that we all have someone who cares, even if we don't talk much. It's also a way for her to tell us SHE cares about us even if she doesn't know us. It's almost like a message to stay strong. Any time I have a bad day due to work or my depression really hits, I just listen to this song and remember thing's will be ok.
Have not heard much of her music before (yes i dont listen much to radio or western music :) ) Did enjoy discovering the album with you. Thank you for the journey 💜
The first time I heard "hope ur okay", it was when I was watching the film on Disney+. It made me cry as a 12 year old (now 13) who lived (and still lives) in a somewhat abusive home. I relate to the whole "can't wait to go to college" thing because I so badly want to leave my home. It makes me cry when I hear it so I skip it a lot. I didn't this time and now I have to wait to take my plate in the kitchen because I don't want my parents to see that I've been crying. I have the same feelings about the song "Matilda" by Harry Styles. I just think that "hope ur okay" is such an underrated song that should get much more attention.
When the album first came out it was speculated that a lot of these songs were about Joshua Bassett and how he started dating Sabrina carpenter. Olivia has since came out and said that they aren’t all about him, however the initial force of Olivia fans towards Joshua were brutal (no pun intended). He was receiving death threats(while he was already in the hospital might I add- he wrote a song called lifeline about this and it’s heartbreaking) and a lot of hate. He responded about a year later in his three track ep (however the last song is about a mix of things other than this, it touches on his SA that happened when he was younger). I would recommend listening to Joshua Bassett, not just to hear his response but because he is amazing IMO
also if we wanna add sabrina’s pov, she released “skin” while the drama was happening and then “because i liked a boy” when her album came out (which i also recommend bc i love it as well)
Honestly as overall shit as this whole situation was, especially for Sab and Josh, all three of them are super talented and we got some really damn good music out of it. Emails I can't send in particular I think is a must listen to. I've been a fan of Sabrina for many years now and seeing her emotional and artistic progression with this new era is a huge privilege to me.
@@fuckbrigadoon5420Ikr lmaoo, like we just kept getting showered with great music from their ‘drama’. So I’m not complaining lol This’ll be one of those “music feuds” that’ll be part of our generation haha
I LOVE THIS ALBUM!! It evokes SO much emotion. I think this album has no skips. I dont really have a favorite because it changes day to day based on mood. I can say my least favorite is "hope ur ok". It's a great song but it feels like it was tacked on at the end and doesn't quite fit the mood of the rest of the album. I am 31 and have never been more excited for an album as I am for Guts!!!
jealousy jealousy is my favourite too, even after listening to it on loop for many days it never got boring to me, which is something. it was my most played song on spotify last year, it's just too good. anyway, this video reminded me of all the other songs so obviously, i had to get emotional and cry. ❤
Loved this reaction, I’ve seen a few of your shorter reactions before but this has sold me. So fun hearing you break down the songs and so glad you liked it! hope that ur ok always makes me cry a lot which leaves me feeling weird at the albums end, which is the only reason I don’t love it as a closer
Love how you’re so articulate with your words and how you point out and appreciate all the different aspects of each song. Too many people are so quick to call a song bad simply because it’s not their taste without ever really listening to the art of it all. I look forward to checking out your other videos! Also, random, but I like your shirt lol
the nyd was an interpolation!! she gave writing credit to taylor and jack but it’s her playing the piano which is why it’s the same notes but is paced differently.
Ok Sir….we’re officially fighting. Comparing “Jealousy” to NIN? Hmm. Im having trouble seeing that but I love that YOU see it. I was in high school when I first started listening to NIN, so long time fan of theirs but I do like my opinions being challenged and have me look at things I’ve seen one way for so long differently. I’m allowing it to roll around in my mind, so thank you for getting me thinking!!
I know it’s a little late but I still wanna say it lmao. If you enjoyed Olivia then I definitely recommend Conan Gray, his got a beautiful voice and some really nice songs as well as writing skills, especially his album “Superache”. Definitely recommend it! Great video as well♥️
I would love love love it you would react to Closer to Closure by Lexi Jayde. I feel like maybe she’s not that known but her albums is sad and beautiful. I can listen to it on replay for hours!! You always have such a good way of wording your thoughts on artists music and I would absolutely love to hear what you have to say 🙏❤️
Awesome reaction really enjoyed hearing your thoughts:) If you liked this album, I suggest you react to Superache by Conan Gray. He's a close friend of Olivia and the album is incredible. Can't wait to see more from you, Have a great day!
We've all been young and filled with teenage angst. Some of us are adults and still feel that way, we just call it anxiety now 😅 And shit, I forgot about "hope ur ok"... now I'm crying 😅
Olivia is an American/Irish-Filipino descent.. Her mom is an instructor and her dad is a therapist which makes me believe that even if her songs may sound heart breaking, I'm sure she's a well balanced woman and grew up in a very stable and decent family.
You have heard drivers licence and good for you without realising they were olivia rodrigo singing.. Well FYI.. Those two songs were the two most popular songs of 2021 having been on billboards top 100 and top 200 for weeks and breaking records in different music platforms setting world record up there.. Including her album sour.
Oh now i really want to see your reaction to the pov of the supposed ex here😃that'd be Joshua Basset's 3 songs named crisis/secret/set me free.. Although crisis is like the exact song where he directly approches all these drama.. The other two are also really good.
Listen to Joshua Bassett!!! It’s the boy between the two girls BUT I PROMISE NEITHER OF THE THREE ARE BAD PEOPLE , I love all three of them. The internet made it so much worse
