The way and tone of ' sayang' in Bahasa can influence the meaning of the word... If it is pronounced quick and clear, it's an endearment or love. If it said with a long *sa.yang~~* and abit melodic, it symbolises the waste and can be used to criticise something.

Wth, sayang also had another meaning, that is waste in ID, same as PH, dibuang sayang, sangat di-sayang-kan, and when you drop your food then said sayang banget Or like in the video "waste of time", we could use this "sayang waktunya" or the longer "sayang waktunya terbuang percuma". It had the same meaning Non of those Sayang means love, or care. That's the original meaning of the word (same as PH)

watching and finding out about some Tagalog words that descent from the Austronesian language I realised just how much like 'corruption' of the words has become lol. Like the word sayang means both "loving someone or something", can an endearment calling but it also mean "what a waste/it's so wasteful" in both Malay and Indonesian but the Tagalog? They just take the worst of the meaning of the word LMFAO. It's so interesting. I still remember watching soap operas from Philippines and finding out that anak means anak (child) and anakko (idk the spelling) basically means child and the spelling and pronunciation is simply a corrupted pronunciation and half the meaning from anakku which means my child. Anyway, I look forward to seeing more evidence that the SEA was once whole before the colonisation of every parts of it.

If you dig into other major languages in PH, you can see a lot more similarities. My actual local language (not Tagalog) has a literal aku which means I/me (ako in Filipino) which is also the exact same thing in Bahasa. And that we have apuluh for number 10 (sampu in Filipino) which I believe is sapuluh in Bahasa.

Sayang could also mean what jurad mean, it's depends on the context. If you say sayang towarda person/entity, then yes it's most likely mean honey as in my love etc. I'm sure someone else already explain the in depth of it in the comment. In summary, there is a lot of indonesian words that have different meanings based on the context and areas you came from.

Well in ID sayang could mean several things based on the context, it could both mean ‘love’ or ‘wasteful’ just same like in PH. In context of love, sayang in ID use as a petname to call your loved one. While in context of wasteful you could have said something like ‘sayang banget, ya’ to express like ‘it’s too bad that happened…’

in indo it means the same but the intonation is very specific. its a downwards tone. due to the homonym nature its somewhat necessary to say like that. its also very common to use superlative after which somewhat negates the necessity of the tone, where the downwards tone is emphasised on the superlative

We indonesian also use 'sayang' to express pity of wasting something relatively precious or sentimentally valuable.. Something like 'mottainai' in japanese. For example the expression 'dibuang sayang / sayang kalau dibuang' is said when something is not of great importance, but too precious (in sentimental value) to be wasted. Tagalog word for love is = pagibig or Sinta. Sayang can mean "its a waste" but i think its too strong, it could just mean "a missed opportunity" or in this actual video it means "almost" like "I almost had it"

@@kenjiclipz Yes unfortunate, that’s a more accurate translation of sayang in filipino. We can also use sayang in context of love like a love lost kind of thing, ( sayang na pag ibig ). Jurard panicked explaining it and grabbed the first word that’s close to sayang hahaha.
