Additionally they are genuinely race in training suits that cause friction while nowadays you have so called tech suits which help you by compressing your muscles, reducing friction and much more. The tech suits use special materials like carbon fibre that is why they are very expensive usually.
Doug Raddi, if you want to accuse FloJo of doping but cannot prove it, then I will play devil's advocate and say US swimmers like Shirley Babashoff, Tracy Caulkins, Angel Martino, Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky resort(ed) to some type of PEDs. They swam numerous events at competitions and their ability to recover was mind boggling!
The GDR swimmers were on drugs, same as today with some Russian athletes. State sponsored doping on a scale you would not believe.Athletes were given Turinabol passed off as vitamins from the age of 10. Look up East German shot putter Heidi Kreiger for example (there are plenty of others if you dig a little bit) This was East Germany in the 1960's 70's and 80's afterall. No mobiles no internet and certainly no foreign TV at the time.
