What a BEAUTIFUL machine!!! Is that a rose gold color?? Or like a copper penny color? I see some shimmering golden metallic flecks in there too! Just asking because I have some partial color deficiency in my my vision. But LOVE rose gold!!! The grandfather who gave this typewriter to his granddaughter as a gift is such a kind soul, along with Phoenix Typewriter for ensuring that it's all set for its new own!!! Love this video!!! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

Thanks, I discovered the same space bar issue today on my SM2 and thought about fixing it the way you did. What a nice machine. A piece of art you can still open up and fix for yourself.
Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪! Thank you so much for this video! I am gifting a sm2 to my child and it had the same carriage problem. Thanks to this video I was able to fix it. Thank you once again!
Hey! I just wanted to say thanks for all the time and effort you put into sharing your knowledge with the community and preserving it for future generations to come. It is almost invaluable to be able to look over the sholder of an old expert and watch them work.. you can pick up so many little tips and tricks and wisdoms that would have taken you *years* to find out on your own (if ever)!
Thanks for this! I have one of these and the carriage is hitting the housing. I actually have to press shift to continue typing. I’ve just had a look and the rubber washers reaaaallly need replacing. I’m so glad to find out it’s something I’ll be able to fix by myself :)
I can't thank you enough for showing me (us) how to remedy the carriage knocking against the body of the O SM3! I bought some rubber washers, installed them, and problem solved. Again, thank you very much.
Silly question Duane... why not just get some rubber washers the same size and use those... or were you just using what you had on hand? I have some washers handy, so I was going to try those, but maybe you know something about the durability of the washers vs the hose with fiber in it. Just curious.
Rubber washers would be fine, just been using the tubbing method for decades, got lots of sizes of hose, some with fiber (fuel) some just rubber (vacuum) I might look into getting a collection of rubber washers . . . . .
ny chance you or anyone following has a parts breakdown (schematic) of the SM3 intervariable adjuster? I’m not sure this is the right name of the part, but this is what I refer to as the knob you depress on the right roller knob, I believe it just allows the platen to spin without engagin gears. The button is a long shaft that connects to the left side roller knob. I need to repair as pushing the button does nothing. I can not find a repair vid online or a parts schematic in any of the online Ames Manuals, so I am just stuck!
Variable is usually the term, or platen variable, but there is other nomenclature The facebook typewriter groups are very active, try the maintenance site facebook.com/groups/typewritermaintenance/?ref=bookmarks
Thank you so much, my SM4 was getting stuck on the tabs and rubbing, put new rubber spacers and now works perfect... except the alignment, so that is next.
Hey Duane, I have an SM3 where the Ribbon is leaving a faint ink smudge below the text I type. Ribbon is install correct. Do you think the rubber space getting smushed beneath could cause this. Would replacing help?
Bushing are not the problem. Paper tight, guide wire tight /snug to paper. Others have found the angle of the lift arms, they can be formed flat to help eliminate the curve/bulge of the ribbon, just did one recently and it helped.
Phoenix Typewriter thanks Duane I’ll take a closer look. I actually rewound the ribbon on the spool too and it seemed to help. This one I took straight from package and popped in. Ribbon might be a little slack. Usually I rewind on the metal spools if I have them.
Help! BAR NOT WORKING AT ALL. I have the same make and model but seems like the bar is not connected at all. So how do you begin to approach this issue?
Start at the spacebar, follow the linkage. Does it move when typing ? does back space work ? Sometimes you need a working machine to do a side by side comparison.
@@phoenixtypewriter2136 yes the back space bar works just not the actual space bar. I've been using the Tab key to troubleshoot. It's just been tedious.
Family heirlooms like this are fantastic! I have an SM4 with the identical finish in prime shape. Only problem with it is that the clean plastic over the type alignment guide is cracked. It's a fantastic machine to type on!
I have a problem with my rear spacers, (the once you replaced in this video) that will need to be done, but amazingly that's the only thing wrong with it, minus the comma key, does like to stick when it's cold. it's definitely one of my favorite typewriters, and I'd love to have another
hello I have a olympia splendid 33 whose carriage doesn't advance while typing. But now I don't even know how to remove the carriage. Could you help me to figure out?
Last thing a typewriter technician does is remove carriages, most are very difficult. Never taken carriage off a splendid 33. Not sure where to tell you to start troubleshooting without hands-on analisis.
Oh :( mine happens to have something different. Half of the spacebar is acting as a repeat spacer key :( it was working perfectly but after taking it from a room to another it started failing. I may need to take it for repair but I need a free day for that ☹️. It’s a portable Remington that I use for work 😭 but i don’t get what’s wrong.
Thanks so much for this! I came across this video in the comments of another video, in which a temporary fix for the jammed carriage was offered. I just replaced the rubber washers with furniture felts and it worked like a charm 👍🏻
Hi There! Thanks for the video :) My Olympia Typewriter is secondhand and I just found out the carriage is not able to move. It doesnt work with the handle. Also when I'm typing the complete carriage is not moving... Would you know what to check first? Or is there just a handle that I didnt unlock...? Would love to hear from you!
Do you have a video showing removal of the carriage assembly to access the escapement? I have an SM3 carriage that is immobilized moving either direction where something is either not meshing properly or has been deformed underneath the carriage (whether carriage is to left or right of center, can be moved, barely, only by force). And no, it's not 'melted' rubber spacers under the frame or bent carriage lock mechanism--I'm well aware of both those--this is something very unusual which I've never experienced on the many SM3's I've tackled :/ Visually, the escapement star wheel has all it's 'spikes'. But something strange is inhibiting carriage movement. Thank you.
Hello... I was given an Olympia typewriter and all keys will only go halfway up. Do you have any idea what the problem may be? I'm sure I'll have to take it to the doctor for treatment.
When typewriters come to the end of the line ( right margin ) they lock, both movement and type bars. This is called "line lock", this mechanism is sticking, stuck, binding or broken Troubleshooting, investigating, would be necessary to figure out culprit and solution.
@@phoenixtypewriter2136 Thank you for your speedy reply. I want to sell it. As an expert, would you recommend selling it as is, or repair and sell or are there to many variables for you to properly answer that question. Visually it's in very good condition.
@@ChazingRainbows Well would be best to be able to sell a working, typing, typewriter but If you pay to get it fixed you might not be able to recover that expense when selling it. I bought my last SM-3 , exact same color, working, for $30. these range from $30 to $300 in this krazy typewriter market
Thank you for your videos. They are very helpful and much appreciated. I have a question about the Olympia SM3 (two, questions, actually) and hope it's OK to ask them here. Question 1) I own a 1958 Olympia SM3. It appears very clean and well cared for. All seems great except for two troubling issues. The letters on the page are 'light' on the lower portion of the letters. I have no idea how to adjust this. I can do it with other machines but not this one. I'm lost. I've watched numerous videos and have tried to read repair manuals. (I have tried to adjust the height of the rails using the adjustment pieces located on each side of the carriage , but without any results in the type. I have already replaced all four of the "melting" washers, located between the case and the body of the typewriter. Do you have a video that addresses type adjustment on an SM3? Question 2) While typing on my SM3 all seems great. Then, without warning, a letter will seem to catch and not print. (Actually, it feels like a margin limit has been met, but I am in the middle of a line.) Then, afterwards, all returns to working perfectly. This behavior is not limited to any particular letter. but I notice it a lot with the letter "T", simply because it is used so often...
1st problem is the carriage might have gotten jarred/bent in some way causing the factory clearances to be out of whack, wouldn't take much tweaking for this to happen & to reverse the bend is nearly impossible. Or could be the shift motion adjustments are out of balance with the curvature of the platen roller & sometimes can be readjusted to compensate for uneven print, don't have a video for that exactly. 2nd problem sounds a little like the line lock is engaging accidentally, I don't have one to look at right now & don't remember how it engages, but I would start their & make sure it's not sticking or maybe the spring that hold it back is loose or off.
OK. I'll just live with the faded type, at least for now. And, I'll check on the line lock issue. Thank you very much for the input and the suggestions.
I have the rubber spacer issue on my Olympia SM-9, except on there, the spacer has two metal pieces on either side of the spacer. I am guessing that I need to keep those parts, clean them up, and use them on some new spacers? I appreciate these videos you do as well.
These are factory heat vulcanized parts. These are good unless they separate, add washer/spacer for more height clearance. You can always modify a rubber spacer with 1 longer screw. I just posted a similar answer on Facebook facebook.com/groups/typewritermaintenance/?fref=nf
This is amazing to watch. I just got my typewriter and would love to do these things myself but I’m just learning. I live in Denver so not sure if there’s anyone I could take it to to get t cleaned
Thanks again for another helpful video Duane! Picked up an SM3 this week, and after cleaning & getting her back together, the platen started making the click click sound again, but then the carriage started doing this grinding thing. Glad to know it’s a quick & simple fix! Your information is so helpful to us in the Typosphere 🙏🏼
I haven't scratched many machines in my 40 year career because I'm fully aware of these things Olympia sm-3 have 4 protruding screws on back panel, these are only thing making contact with my gloss formica work surface You can see daylight between work surface and back panel, that's also why it slides so easy . . . .
