Kristi Yamaguchi, legendary figure skater and the founder of the Always Dream Foundation, talks to Ali about the fear among the Asian community. While her grandfather was serving in the U.S. Army, Kristi’s mother was born in a WWII internment camp. She says she now tells her parents to “be aware of what's going on around you whenever you're out and about” and says, “it's not just going to take the Asian American community, but...everyone as a whole coming together.”» Subscribe to MSNBC: on.msnbc.com/Su...

Kristi Yamaguchi is a positive role model for everyone! I saw her at a fund raising event and at the end of the event as she was about to leave with her family, many fans asked to take pictures with her and she graciously took the time with everyone, always with a smile and never rushing anyone, a true role model and a class act!

This woman is so powerful and elegant. When will America truly understand the importance of diversity to the lifeblood of our democracy?
@woodensurfer
@woodensurfer 3 года назад
What diversity are you talking about? Clan diversity is always a weakness in any society, democracy in the Western narrative or not. The most enfranchised groups assimilate completely without fanfare, dilemma or hesitation. Human beings are not hermaphrodites. Love between a man and a woman is powerful. If there is inclusion in courtship and marriage, assimilation will result. Only those discriminated against preserve ethnic cultures. The white melting pot came into existence naturally for a good reason.

@woodensurfer

@@greenhometony Do you mean a blonde is a blonde, having the widest choices in courtship and marriage, does not make a man happy? Or would you want to be caged into a Chinatown or Korean Town? In the suburb of Milwaukee, there is a Germantown, which is a proper noun you put on an envelope. It has only a faint sense of being German. No disproportionate number of people with German names live in it. Is Germantown a more salubrious society condition than China Town were people look a certain way are caged? And within those with German names, a name is just a name. The only German lineage is with a paternal great grandfather. Does this bring unhappiness? This is the result of a succession of happy courtship and marriages across white nationalities.

I’m Asian and a US Army vet,I’ve served 12 years active and was discharged (Honorable) after I was injured and can no longer resume my duty. I’m now a long haul trucker, just last week as I was fueling my truck at truck stop in Salt Lake City,UT. I was approached by another trucker, he was a Caucasian male, he started using racial slurs towards me and called me name and he tells me to go back to my country. I started laughing and than responded “ Hey carrot top or if you prefer orange buffoon, I’ll start packing when you’re done packing too that way we both can leave this country!” I told him if you want a piece of me then by all means,please come to me! He took a swung at me. I reacted and knocked two of his teeth out,he began to bleed with tears coming down his face.

I salute Kristi Yamaguchi for speaking out as a world renowned American against anti-Asian racism. Such discrimination must end. As a European-American who was lucky to have Japanese-American friends in public schools, I was shocked and dismayed to hear friends speak about how their families were treated unfairly during World War II, were locked up in internment camps, and even lost full scholarships to UCLA and other colleges only because they were Japanese-Americans. This at the same time the 442nd was the most decorated unit of its size in American history while fighting in Europe. Even the Supreme Court allowed this, and we must learn from our mistakes as a nation that all our citizens have dignity and are our brothers and sisters. I for one, will always speak out if I hear racist comments. Thank you, Kristi, for telling your truths!

I'm proud to call this young American woman a fellow American, what she said about our country is absolutely true that it is the diversity of our nation that makes us great. Her father served in the U.S. Army in the 442nd a battalion that lost almost half it's men because of the tough fighting they endured. They save "the lost battalion" who were caught behind German lines and who were all from Texas and I bet you that any f those who were saved by these American's would tell you today that they are still thankful for the 442nd and the brave men who risked their lives for their fellow American's. See the movie "Go For Broke" for some insight on what they did!

I think a lot of Asian people have the tendency of not speaking up when we experienced racism in America. I'm also guilty of that most of the time. I recently heard my White co-worker told an Asian worker "I'm going to put you on a boat and send you back home." I was shocked to hear someone made a racism comment like that openly in the work place. No one said anything. I reported the incident to my supervisor (Also a White woman) and she did not take my complain seriously and swept it under the rug and she did not do anything about it, even thought I asked her to speak to the worker that made the racist comment. When you report a racist incident and no one took it seriously, then you are more likely not to speak up again the next time it happens again.

For all of those Asian haters out there, just know this. When Kristi Yamaguchi won the gold medal, Japan was trying to use her ethnic background to their advantage...to a point calling her she's Japan's proud daughter to win the gold medal for her mother country, Japan. Kristi Yamaguchi fired back, saying she's a proud American, and how proud she was to win the gold medal for USA...not for Japan. She did this at the cost of losing all kinds of lucrative contracts with Japan back in early 1990s. This is what many great Americans from all different kinds of backgrounds do. They all try to bring something to this great nation of all, every day and night, little by little to make this a greater nation. My question to you is, what have YOU done for America other than spreading hates?

Her mother had concerns about Kristi being all over the place in commercial endorsements. It was said they were very selective in what product endorsements they would take on. Kristi also strikes me as keeping her own counsel. She is very private about her personal life and says very little about it.

I really have to believe the recent violence against Asians is being perpetrated by a very tiny fringe group of troubled Americans and does not reflect the feelings and attitudes of the vast majority of Americans. Those who try to make a connection between the virus and Asian Americans are obviously troubled, but also have a peculiar reasoning deficiency. Sound reasoning skills seem to be at an all-time low in this country.
@melissahogan868

You sound completely racist right now! Go look at the statistics it's not White people committing the most crimes against Asians, stop trying to create a false narrative!
@melissahogan868
@melissahogan868 3 года назад
You do know people understand the difference between where a virus initially came from and an actual person right? If anything is perpetrating violence it's the depression, stress, and anxiety to name a few symptoms of being on lockdown from Covid. Plus the media isn't helping by fanning hate and division!

@@melissahogan868 The question is, my dear, why is the violence which previously was not directed at Asians, is now suddenly directed at them?
@kims368
@kims368 3 года назад
America offered fertile ground for the violence against Asian Americans to surge. These crimes are rooted in widespread racism and a perspective that Asian Americans are "Other." This existed from way before the pandemic, and aggressions and microaggressions have abounded before and now. When growing up, I often heard comments like, "For an Asian, you're attractive" or "You speak English well," and now my daughters are hearing the same things - in the same city that’s deemed liberal. I witnessed an exercise for children - Images of many people of different races were displayed on a poster board. The kids were asked, "Who is American?" And the kids picked out all the Caucasians and a few Blacks. People of other races were left unchosen - including Asians. The answer was they are ALL American. People often will use the words Caucasian and American interchangeably. Person 1: "What did she look like?" Person 2: "American" (ie: Caucasian). Words we choose reflect what's going on in our minds. Until a critical mass of us acknowledge the implicit bias - or worse - that we all have, and do something about it, the hate crimes will continue. This requires the truth - that we are all Americans - to be impressed upon by Asians and people of all races. Enough of us need to speak up and stand together. Otherwise, these crimes will continue to grow in number.
@michaelberta3153
@michaelberta3153 3 года назад
@@kims368 When you have people of various groups in a community they behave in predictable patterns. If Asians were the majority and Caucasians were the minority, do you think things would be any different? Bias is something we all have in many forms. Racism is not the same thing as bias. Before you hop on the "woke" racism bandwagon, I think you would be making a big mistake. You shouldn't hold an entire race of people responsible for the actions of an ignorant few. Asians have made so much progress in the US, I would hate to see that progress diminish because of a recent trend that is very likely to go away very soon.

We all share earth let's love on each other and build a better today and tomorrow.
