I have been doing a lot more Wildlife and Bird Photography. Sometimes I found it very hard to find my subject and track it across the sky. It's amazing how long the 300mm is when combined with the MC-20. I noticed an Olympus EE-1 Red dot sight used on EBay. I bought it and am learning how to make the most of it.

I have mounted a small piece of plastic pipe onto my Sony A7iv/200 - 600 combo, It act as an old fashioned iron sight on a rifle. The pipe is about an inch long and has a notch cut out on order to secure it with a tie wrap and I place it top left hand side (looking from viewfinder end). Before shooting I calibrate the pipe sight like you do with Oly EE sight, but it is just a matter of raising or lowering the sight's position, so it is synchronises with the viewfinder. When I find a subject I bring the camera up to my eye, get the subject in that, then turn on the camera and the subject naturally appears in the viewfinder. You have to allow for parallax error, if the target is closer or further than the calibration distance, then I just have the bird/animal a bit higher or lower in the pipe sight. Like your experience with the Oly sight, it has improved my keepers too. You can see what I have done by following this link, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9M3F2oaje0o.html (my only video) but you will have to wait until the end, as the video is mostly about my DIY rain cover, which I made in response to a comment on another RU-vid video.

Thanks for the video...good info beautiful photos/videos. I might purchase one...seems the perfect accessory for the 300mm f/4 MC20. I fold the brim back on my boonie hat or push it back.

Thanks, David: it does have to be adjusted for the appropriate distance to the subject, I have found that out. It has been working out for me so far. Mike

Thanks Ryan: When I am using the 300mm and the MC20 I have 600mm and no zoom out to help with locating the subject that can be fast moving. I feel that I had better success with the Kingfisher and some other fast moving small subjects. Thanks again for watching and especially taking the time to comment. We have lots of wildlife videos on Bellas Vistas. Mike

Thanks for sharing! I just recently got a red dot sight as well. However I have a question regarding how to use it to aim though. When you were demonstrating in your video, your eyes were fairly close to the red dot itself. I am wondering if this prevents you from seeing the viewfinder/backscreen at the same time. In this case, how does one monitor the Autofocus then? Much appreciate if you may share your insight!

I just spray and pray letting the autofocus take care of itself. I have the shutter preference turned off so Focus is priority not shutter. Hope that helps, Mike

@@bellasvistas3463 ow wow I didn't expect it from the camera itself. I tought you used a external mic for that or something.

Do you have to calibrate the sight everytime you put it on the camera?
@bellasvistas3463
@bellasvistas3463 11 месяцев назад
Most times I put it on I take a few minutes on a tripod to zero it in for the distance I expect to be using. It's a bit of a bother but not all that much. It has a pin registration to the body but it's not perfect. It has enabled me to get Kingfishers in flight that I don't think I could have gotten otherwise. Thanks for watching.
