Live Composite is a great feature in Olympus Cameras. It is a unique way of capturing long exposure light trails, star trails and to be used in lightpainting. In this part 1 tutorial I cover the basics.
Have you tried Live Comp? If you have please send my your best LiveComp image. I will give feed back on your image on Friday the 26th.
Send your images to livecomp@peterforsgard.com by 24.10.2018.
I make all my content with mirrorless Olympus micro four thirds gear. I am an Olympus Visionary.

Thank you Peter. There is so much to learn about photography nowadays. I started with Canon gear in 2012, and that was easy compared to all the things you can do with new cameras like Olympus. I'm getting old, and learning a new thing everyday helps me to keep my mind active. Thank you for your videos. I learn something every time.

Thanks for the tutorial. I really want to try live composite with my new E-M5 mark III. By the way, for E-M5 mark III users, the live composite mode is found under the "B" (bulb) dial setting, not "M".

Hi Peter. Just a side note: When you press shutter button for the first time, camera is not doing calculations. Is actually recording a black image at the same shutter speed. This black image that will be used at the end of process for noise reduction. Thank you for your videos.

Thanks for another great tutorial. When setting up Livecomp on my old EM1 MK2 the screen on my camera becomes very dim & I find it difficult to read in poor light. This happens only when I use Livecomp.
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter Год назад
It is possible to adjust the brightness. Go to Live View Boost and set Live Composite to On2. It will show the image brighter, but it won't affect the exposure.

Live Comp is a nice feature. But, Peter, it’s a small logical cap in your presentation. How to find that Live Com setting? Rob Trek’s guidance makes that point clear. Some of us are real novices! But everything what you are telling in ok. Thanks for your videos. They are very useful.
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 4 года назад
It depends on what camera you have. Older models it can be found in manual mode as one of the "shutter speeds". On newer models it can be found from the Mode Dial when you choose B from it.

Great functionality, but I'm not so happy on the following formulation on the configuration screen: "Exposure time per image" should read "Exposure time for the reference image". Or do I misunderstand?
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 5 лет назад
It has the same length. The camera takes consecutive images in a row and stacks them in camera to make one image.
@TheMarenches
@TheMarenches 5 лет назад
Ok, I thought the capture after the first image was done on a continuous basis. But what if you choose for instance 60 sec and for the 2nd image, you stop after 30 sec. Will the camera stop the capture immediately, or wait until 60 sec is reached?
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 5 лет назад
The camera will go on as long as there is power in the battery unless you stop it. It stacks the images.

Is there a way to turn off the noise reduction inside of live comp ???? My noise reduction is off , i used live comp to do fireworks- works great - except the noise reduction after live comp slows down shooting of more fireworks !!! And yes my canera - OM-1 , is up to date on firmware . THX FOR ANY IDEAS , SUGGESTIONS…. ETC . This noise reduction after each live composite has baffled me - i cannot seem to turn it off … IS THIS NORMAL ???? Thx

Hi, i have a omd 10 mark iii and have a question. If we use the live comp can we manage the delay of shutter?

No you cannot. To avoid the camera shake you can use OI.Share app as a remote control to trigger the shutter.

@@ForsgardPeter Hi actually all off but still cant see the feature am doing something wrong but dont know where. What shutter shall i keep the M mode?
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 2 года назад
You need to set the mode dial to B. Choose Live Comp. from there. It does not matter what shutter speed you have on M. The shutter speed is set from the menu. When you have Live Comp. on, press the menu button. It will take straight to set the shutter speed. It is a bit awkward way to set the shutter speed.

I'm confused about live time and composite modes. Using the OM-m1 mark lll in manual I can't see how to set up for stars for instance. How do I set up Live Composite and Live Composite timer? How to avoid camera shake when releasing the shutter? In the god old days we were using a cable release!

When you have the Live Comp. press menu. It will take you to the Live Comp. shutter speed setting. Then you can choose the base exposure time.

If you dont' want to use the Olympus App you can use, on the olympus cameras which are accepting a "wired remote switch" (OM-D em1 Mark 3 is OK but not EPl-x and there is good and chip one able to replace the original OLY-RM-CB2 one. the brand name is JJC and called MA Series and available on Amazon

I don't get it. I read that the shutter speed tells the camera how fast the LCD refreshes and shows the image. But, I thought the shutter speed controls the exposure of the base photo. My image did not build and did not turn out right.
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter Год назад
What camera body you have. You set the camera to LiveComp and then form the menu you choose the shutter speed. You choose a shutter speed that gives you the correct exposure. You need to press the shutter button twice, the first one makes the camera do some calculations and the second one starts the exposure. What went wrong with the image?

@@ForsgardPeter M1 Mk III. Thank you Peter for responding. I don't know what I did wrong, but what I got was when I set up was a Time exposure, said Time on the LCD. I remember going into the Menu to set up Live Comp, but always ended up with Time (not sure if it was Live Time because the LCD never showed up. Eventually, I went back to the Dial, set it back to M, then back to B, then to Live Comp, and finally it did work. I don't know why Live Comp didn't stick. Then, I tried to turn it off in the Menu and couldn't find that, so I backed out by changing the dial to M for my normal shooting. Will have to try again to refine the process and ambient settings. Thanks.

I wish Olympus used real photographers who have skills to show the features of the camera. So far nothing impressive... Sorry... I am an amateur and I have way more ideas how I can utilize this feature for some stunning photos and not some local fair crap... Not that it's only Olympus that is doing it. Most camera reviews these days come from "reviewers" who are not that great at taking photos.
