Olympus MJU 1 dis- and reassembly + issues I fixed in description

Different issues I fixed:
For all my MJU repairs I used spare parts from a broken MJU
Camera 1: On this one, the film would wind but the camera thought it didn't. I swapped the part with the motor for extending the lens (10:41), because that's where the gear sits that senses if the film is moving. (And I forgot the gear..)
Camera 2 : The shutter didn't work. The lens did go out but the shutter did do anything and it was stuck there until you close the camera. For that I swapped the entire lens unit (10:18). I don't know if it was the flex cable, which is usually the culprit according to the internet. It looked fine and I didn't bother with opening the shutter up, if I could just swap the entire thing.
Camera 3: It wouldn't wind the film. The culprit was the swinging gear at 4:20. You can either swap the plate that it's on by de-soldering it from the main PCB or swap just the gear without the swing arm, that's what I did.
Camera 4: rewinding didn't work. It was the tiny gear on right side at 3:49. It is attached to a long shaft, which connects to the gears on the topside of the camera.
It also happened once that a camera would only shoot if the back is open (while testing with no film), putting a roll i of film in fixed it

By the way, the Olympus Ecru is internally almost the same as the MJU. The biggest difference is the flash unit. It's basically a MJU in a weird body and some things like the flash are different because they are at different spots.

I have a Similar problem on my MJU 1: When turned on, the display shows signs of life, but the lens won't be extended. I can hear a small peeping noise. Probably indicating some kind of defect. Any idea on how to fix it and where to begin to look? Thanks in advance :D

My guess is that the motor, which you can see me take out at 9:53, is too weak or broken. I would clean and lube the gears, make sure everything is turning nicely. If that doesn't work I would swap the motor (the whole part like at 9:53). For that you need a second (broken) mju of course. Worth mentioning it might also be the round rubber seal around the lens (which you can see at 9:27). It is supposed to slide along the lens when it extents. When I repaired "Camera 2" (info in the description), I messed up when putting back the main, orange pcb (13:57). It is a tight fit around the lens, more precisely the rubber seal around the lens and it turned inside out at one spot. This also made it too hard for the motor to extend the lens. You can see the rubber seal from the outside without disassemling, so maybe you can spot it turn inside out, because it became sticky or something. I cleaned and lubed the seal and the contact area on the lens element (zylinder). For this I took out the lens element, which is easy once the motor is out. The battery has enough juice right? Happens to the best of us

@@koorbit Thanks for replying :D The battery definitely had enough juice to power the camera :) Checked twice with other cameras I had laying around. Currently disassembling the MJU. I’m having a little difficulty, removing the PCB from the adhesive on the front. Did you use any kind of solvent the first time around? I’m a little scared of damaging the PCB during removal haha. Currently just using a plastic Scraping tool to get in between the PCB and that adhesive glue.

do you mean removing the main pcb or just bending it out of the way like I did? You only need to do it as I do. i didn't use any solvent on any mju when getting the pcb off the structure and bending it out of the way.on which side are you having difficulties? the film can side? On the film can side, there are the DX code readers on the underside of the pcb and the pcb is held down with a something like a hook, idk how to say it. You can see me do it at 5:49, you have to carefully bend the pcb up from the side to unhook it and then also carefully try to get the DX code readers through their holes.

how do you avoid getting shocked by the flash capacitor during repair?

I just wait for a week or so. I only got shocked once by a mju and it wasn't bad, because the cap wasn't fully charged. In my experience, mjus don't shock me, idk why. There are ways to safely discharge the capacitor, but I haven't looked into them. If you're repairing the flash assembly, I would wait longer or discharge the cap with a safe method.

Do you recommend changing the flash capacitor in mju 1? Mine stop working suddenly, only work without flash now. I opened it up and theres something brown at the cap - leg, i assume the cap is leaking

Yes, but I have to say I had my difficulties with the old solder (i'm not super experienced with soldering). You could either swap just the cap or the whole flash pcb with cap. It sounds like a leaky cap and swapping only the cap will most likely fix it. In your case, I would probably swap just the cap. Usually I recommend swapping the whole flash assembly, assuming you're taking the parts of a broken mju 1 with working flash, because swapping the cap doesn't always fix it [contrary to what reddit believes]. It takes pretty much the same work, just desoldering different pins (the ones to the battery). It goes without saying, try to discharge the caps or leave them without power for like a month.

I have a problem with my Olympus Trip AF Super. Without the film, it can shoot and wind normally, but when I install the film, I can't wind. Can you help me please?
