In this photography video I am sharing my thoughts on why I bought a new compact camera, the Olympus Pen E-P7. I talk briefly about the specifications and share some images to demonstrate the performance of the compact camera which I carry every day. Camera reviews are not the sort of thing that I do very much on my channel, but in the case of this Pen E-P7, I've had some requests to share my thoughts and felt that it might be helpful as there are not that many reviews elsewhere on RU-vid for this compact OM System camera.

If you'd like to learn more about the Anglesey, Snowdonia and North Wales places I visit for my landscape photography, you can see full details on my website in my Location Guides section at: dgriff.gallery/location-guides/.

My absolutely best camera ever. As a filmmaker I do not use EVF at all, record audio always separately, no need for fully articulated screen (I need to see what is happening in the scene, not my actors 😉). What I really love is that I can practically color grade inside the camera and even save 4 color and 4 b/w profiles, kind of like film emulsions. This allows me to light properly as I am shooting to get exactly the atmosphere I want even in 4K on a 20MP sensor. Having said that I can also create my own flat profiles if I want to color grade later. I use only manual lens, so AF is not important to me at all. Last, but not least, it has no crop in any resolution and the bitrate is very high even in 1080p, about 52mbps. Most competitors give you about 18-20mbps in that resolution.

A great choice of EDC camera, I went down a similar route just over a year ago, wanting a decent camera with me, or in the car, all of the time. However, I took a more budget friendly approach with a pre-loved E-PL7; built like a tank, excellent handling, with the specifications of the much more expensive cameras in the Olympus range, but above all, able to provide superb images. At just over £100 including a 14 -42mm zoom, these older Olympus cameras are screaming bargains and make a perfect perma-companion. Indeed, since acquisition, the Olympus has most certainly dialed-in some occasional redundancy for my Full Frame kit ........

My first Olympus M43 was (and is still with me) the 16MP EP5 with the VF4 swivelling EV that plugs into the flash mount. I was tempted to upgrade to the 20MP EP7 but the absence of a flash/accessory port stopped me in my tracks. Once used with a VF4 there's no going back, it's so versatile and so small. Easy to carry (and lose!).

Great video, if you don't have the 20mm Panasonic 1.7 I can very very strongly recommend getting one. I've used Micro Four Thirds since the original EP-1 and that 20mm lens is my absolute fav. It's fast, it's sharp, it's very small/pancake and the 40mm equiv has become my favorite for street and walk-around. The only downside is that autofocus can be a bit slow when focusing from near to far.

Hello Craig, I think you'd quite like it. The PL series only has one command dial so the extra one on the E-P7 is very handy. But where it really shines is the image quality. To have the same internals as the flagship E-M1 mk3 in a compact 'budget' camera makes it a joy to carry with me every day 😊👍

I’ve a E-PL1. The E-P7 is out of my budget’s range. All I hope for is an E-P5. It also has 5-axis IBIS, twin control knobs, and touchable tilt screen. 16MP is enough for me.

Yes, you're right about the EM5 but, for me I'd sold the EM5 after I bought the OM1 because I found that in any instance where there was a toss-up as to which camera to take out the OM1 was winning every time. I think it was because the weight and space-saving of the EM5 was minimal and I was starting to think I might as well take my new favourite camera with me! But I did miss having something to carry every day, and that's when I started looking at my options and came up with this one. 😊👍

Had similar thoughts to you - wanted a compact and lighter camera than my E-M1 MkII - so have just got a E-PL9 as still wanted silent shutter, 4K video and the 9fps for some action shots. And can still use all the other M43 lenses. Great to have option of PEN and OM-D.
@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery Год назад
Hello Mark, thanks so much for watching and getting in touch. It's a really good combination having a much larger body and a very small compact one which takes exactly the same lens system. And I found that there was very little compromise using the PEN in terms of image quality. Of course, there are usage limitations with the feature set, but of course we wouldn't expect that of an EDC camera. But it's nice to know that when an image presents itself we have the gear with us to do it some sort of justice 😊👍
@markhoffman9655
@markhoffman9655 Год назад
@@DGriffGallery One of the oddities about the E-PL9 is that the silent electronic shutter is available ONLY in the "Silent" mode that is a program mode for interior event shooting. No electronic shutter in the PASM modes! Very strange why they would limit an important feature like that as I use silent shutter 99% of the time on my E-M1 MkII. Otherwise enjoying the smaller and lighter form factor.
@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery Год назад
@@markhoffman9655 I would think that they need to maintain the specification differentials between the various series otherwise they run the risk of limiting sales of higher specification devices. It's quite a common thing, of course, and I suppose they have to take a view on what features should be left out of the entry level and enthusiast options. The E-PL (Lite) series is always going to attract the most basic feature set. The next one up (EP) has a few more options available, then OM-5 / E-M5 (series) which have almost everything but not quite, and in a slightly smaller form factor. And then of course the full bells and whistles flagship OM-1 / E-M1 (series). But you make a good point. It is a pity that in order to have an extremely light and compact device you will also have to make compromises on its inherent abilities. But I suppose that a device with that form factor and a full feature set would make sales of a larger and heavier cameras fall off a cliff. Especially if all the larger and heavier camera had to offer was weather-sealing and durability, and perhaps better ergonomics and handling. 😊👍

I've used several PLs and even the first of the PM series cameras but never a full-fat PEN. Personally, I could never get comfy with the grips on the Pens so bought a Lumix GX80 for my walkabout camera. And I did miss the EVF on the Pens I tried. The Lumix EVF is very small but in bright light it's invaluable. For street work, I prefer the 17 and 45 primes over the pancake but for day-to-day use the pancake zooms are great.

This camera is ideal for JPG shooters with the Mono/Color dial (just like the Pen-F, but with an updated interface). Using the built in color wheels you can fine tune any B&W filter (even dark magenta or light cyan!) or any mix of colors/intensities for Color images. Really gives you more options than Fujifilm's famous "film sims" with an easy to use interface. You don't buy this camera if you shot RAW, this is intended for JPG shooters who want to do it all/mostly in the camera. Perfect for someone who learned photography shooting Kodachrome or any other positive film... you can dial in "that look". Also amazing Monochrome options, for those Tri-X shooters or film-sim experimenters.

Nearly bought one of these but in the end went for an ex-demo 5 mk iii for similar money. I know you said you wouldn't do a review, but would appreciate your thoughts on the upgrade from the 1 mk ii to the OM1 as a landscaper. Is the IQ noticeably better and does it actually offer an increased dynamic range? I've been considering the same upgrade and those are the things that really matter to me. Most of the reviews I've seen are from non-landscape photographers, or from slightly biased OM system visionaries, and 2K is a lot of money for a M43 camera!
@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery Год назад
Hello Kevin. I'd say that the IQ is marginally better. It's not night and day better, but there's an intangible quality about the OM-1 images which just seems somehow richer and more detailed. I do think that the DR is better, but unless you have more reasons to upgrade, then dropping £2k to switch out from the 1mk2 really only depends on personal budget matters! 😊👍

I need it as a phone replacement, phones the more advanced they get the more artificial and saturated the image gets and you can't get rid of the hdr. I need it to be ready all the time, the phone if it's not the latest and greatest can get laggy and waste a lot of time till you open the camera app, making you lose the moment. I would say it probably would. The E-P7 has the same sensor and processor as the E-M1 mk2. And not that long ago it was their flagship body. So image quality-wise it'll be far superior. The EP-7 is quite old now, also the "L" series cameras (it denotes a "lite" model) only have one command dial and EP-7 has two, making manual shooting much easier as you spend less time in the menus adjusting exposure settings. @@DGriffGallery I'm quite happy with the E-M5 iii. In terms of "bulk", it's very slight at 414g, but the E-M5 iii is the quintessential M43 camera, representing everything that's great about the system. It's essentially a E-M1 ii in a smaller, lighter body. The ONE thing about the E-P7 is that you could use the color wheel in video, which is great. It's the ONLY camera on the market that can adjust color saturation in video. Dial it in and you'll get a very unique look, but you'll need to record sound separately.

@@DGriffGallery Thanks David ive checked the spec, it should work to 45° down, so you're correct, it's faulty. Ah well !

If it comes back on when in position it may be your hand is covering the eyepiece and fooling the camera to thinking your looking through the viewfinder.

Looking at getting this, but not sure if they make zoom lens of 300mm or larger..

Yes there are options: 75-300 from Olympus and 100-300 Panasonic Lumix. I’ve tried both and settled on the Olympus, there’s a full review of it on my channel a while back 😊👍🏻

It doesn't have the same sensor as the EM1X and EM1III because it doesn't have PDAF. It's still a wonderful camera

That's not entirely correct, the hardware is identical. I made no specific distinction about any software implementation. AF and every other function of the device is software.

@@DGriffGallery PDAF requires special pixels on the sensor that can read phase difference. Sensors with PDAF support are more expensive. I don't believe Olympus would spend the money for hardware PDAF if they didn't intend to include firmware support. Robin Wong discusses this with reference to the Em-10 iv (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rlGXX6Q28o8.html at 5:30). I believe the E-P7 is using the same older sensor as the EM-10 iv.

Why can't Olympus revive the pen F as a genuine rangefinder for micro four thirds. People are just waiting for that camera while keeping the pen alive ...
@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery Год назад
Yes, that's been a puzzle for many Olympus users over the last few years. The success of the digital pen F was quite remarkable, especially the way it has held its value on the secondhand market since it was discontinued. They're probably not likely to create a genuine range finder, but an updated version of the F in that form factor would definitely do well. It maybe they don't want to eat in to E-M10.4, or OM-5 sales, but it didn't do much harm the first time round and I think it would attract additional buyers into the system outside of those particular models. 😊👍

@@DGriffGallery Yes ...and when they do release one ... I hope they don't get too greedy and kill it by overpricing it. Right now realistically only the Fuji-XE4 sits here along the Olympus Pen series and a couple of badly treated Panasonic model lines.

EPL7 is no longer made. Replaced by the EPL 10. The EP 7 is a cousin to the OMD 10 mk 3, all the same minus a few details like no EVF, etc. it is also the first camera released by OMDS.

Your review made me curious how the E-P7 compares to previous Pens, especially the E-P5 as the obvious comparison. Quite disappointing actually: The E-P5 has a MUCH better build quality, with a more solid, heftier body build based on metal parts. The E-P5 is 83g heavier than the E-P7 as a result - testament of the better, more solid build. The E-P5 has the accessory port, allowing usage of the excellent VF-4 electronic viewfinder. The E-P7 does not have the accessory port and no option for an electronic viewfinder at all. The E-P5 is rated by Olympus for 5 full stops of IBIS compensation while OM Digital Solutions rates the E-P7 at only 4.5 stops of IBIS compensation. IBIS in the much older E-P5 is better. This may very well be because the E-P5 is a more solid, heavier camera with more inertia to stabilize it when hand-holding. You can probably get even better results out of the E-P5 when using the electronic viewfinder and the camera to the eye against the body. The built in flash on the E-P5 has a guide number of 7 at ISO 100 while the E-P7 only ships with a built in flash with a guide number of 5.4. Also, the E-P7 does lower the flash sync speed to 1/250s from 1/320s on the E-P5. Continuous drive on the E-P5 is also better with 9 frames per second versus 8.7 frames per second on the E-P7. The E-P5 can do 1/8000s with its mechanical shutter while the E-P7 tops out at 1/4000s. In so many critical areas, the E-P5 is a better camera than the E-P7. Most critically, it seems the focal plane shutter in the E-P5 is a lot more sophisticated and powerful than in the E-P7. The days of Olympus putting out professional grade Pen cameras are certainly over, what's left now is a retro-chic alibi camera without the pro internals (shutter!) and without the solid build quality.

@@DGriffGallery As a small company, they'll probably don't have the resources anymore to focus on more than the OMD line of cameras. It's in the new company name too... They have firmly retreated into the outdoors/adventure/wildlife niche. The Pen cameras only sell well in Japan btw, that's their strongest market.
