Olympus OM Workspace: USB-RAW RAW developing on low spec computer

In this video I develop RAW files on an older computer in both a standalone manner as well as using the camera's processor in conjunction with the computer. Punchline: the camera's USB-RAW functionality is MUCH faster than the standalone computer.
I also develop the same RAW files on a M2 Pro Mac Mini to see how a new desktop would peform.
Thanks for checking out the video!

Using the camera as an extra processor is such a cool little feature. Though It is something that ends up being impractical. The OM Workspace has always been slow but now that I have an M1 processor Mac I think hardware has finally achieved a status that this software really shines and is fast enough. By the way using this with the Em1x its lighting fast because of the two processors and it manages heat well and you can plug it in using a DC port too. I just wish there were more features that you could use in OM workspace.

The M1 works well with OM Workspace and the M2 moves the performance up another notch. It is a shame it has been historically so slow as I like using it. Thanks for checking out the video and taking the time to comment.

Nice video - I completely agree: using proprietary software is am excellent idea. Btw, also love NX and Workspace haha

Thanks for checking out the video Thomas! Workspace and Studio aren’t as full featured as other packages but they’re a good free platform with predictable output. Thanks for commenting.

Nice Video. I have the OM 1 and have had no luck getting Workspace to recognise the Camera if I select the USB Raw option. My computer is quite old (HP Z230) but has a decent Video Card and 32 Gb of RAM on a i5 processor. Selecting the Storage option when camera is connected by cable will launch OM Workspace and then I can also use the camera icon above the Edit Palette in the Navigator panel but then Workspace prompts me to connect the camera ( which at that stage is already connected with both card contents visible within the WS app)...seems that there are some issues around connectivity re this.

I am a bit late watching this but if you are just processing the ORFs using the JPEG settings at the time of capture, and passing them straight through OMW without editing, and exporting a JPEG, why not just shoot JPEG+RAW in the first place and import the JPEGs to LR. What am I missing?

Hey Dunk. Thanks for checking out the video. This process allows you to select JPEG settings/develop the RAW on your computer like other RAW development apps. But it hands off the processing back to the camera’s processor to speed up the RAW processing rather than relying on the computer’s processor. Does that better explain it? Best.

@@jonneave Thanks Jon, I think I missed the point. I understand that you would do this if the in-camera JPEG settings were not right at the time of capture and needed reprocessing from the RAW. If the RAW processor can recover highlights and shadows, you wonder why these tools are not present in the camera. I guess we will see in-camera RAW processing equivalent to what can be done of the PC at some stage - as computing power seems to be increasing every iteration

@MrDunk66 Well as it happens a few camera brands allow you to process a RAW file in camera as many times and in as many ways as you like using the picture styles/picture controls that you’d select when typically shooting JPEG, using the cameras JPEG engine and saving the files to the memory card. Obviously this isn’t as flexible as a standalone editor but being able to process a RAW file in the camera a few different ways (eg flat, vivid, monotone) can be helpful when you dont have access to a computer but dont want to initially capture a JPEG. And some brands allow picture-style bracketing - think exposure bracketing but instead of adjusting the exposure automatically, you’re applying every picture style to the RAW and saving all of those files to the memory card. This could be useful in say high contrast situations for instance when having a range of styles to chose from might be helpful. Thanks again for checking out the video.

@@jonneave that take appeals to me as a ART bracketing devotee and ultrabook user. In camera bracketing is also punishing the SD cards whenever I skip raw development in post. The editor preview remains driven by the CPU/GPU, right? Hopefully a relatively modern machine can handle that and maybe the software is clever enough to proxy the preview to a down sampled jpg of sorts. Surface Pro with 3:2 aspect ratio is a great choice imo - last time I went shopping I ended up with a 2nd hand Surface Book 2 to my surprise, with a 2GB Nvidia GPU that may assist OM W some of the way. 3:2 displays are rather rare these days it seems.
