Seems like a natural upgrade to my original E-M1 when prices drop a little after the initial rush. Yes, I'm disappointed that there's no new sensor but hey, one has to live in the real world. :)

@@BobAndersson it's definitely a decent upgrade to your Mark I, but then so would the Mark II.

Still checking OMD reviews ... Most reviewers of OM-Ds say that LiveSCP menu system is intimidating. Try following: Menu> CogWheel> D1> Control Settings>P/A/S/M/B ... Uncheck "LiveSCP", Check "Live Control". Then switch the camera to PASM or B mode, and to enter menu press "Ok". Everything important is on the right column, while you see all possible options on the bottom. I prefer this method, since i dont use touchscreen, and i can change settings while looking through EVF, without losing view of the subject. Live SCP will be still available, but through "Live View" button and then OK, in case you like to adjust sharpness, saturation, white balance or other more detailed settings.

Thanks Gordon, a very fair review. For me, like the EMX - there just isn’t enough to upgrade my EM1ii. They’re all fantastic cameras (love my EM1ii), but I worry about the ‘sameness’ across the three cameras. m4/3 cops enough abuse on the interwebs, I was really hoping to see a significant upgrade here including a new sensor.
@wikicamara
@wikicamara 4 года назад
Completely agree. It looks more like an "S" version than a truly new model. Same everything with the exception of the processor and joystick. I wonder where is Olympus heading to with such modest upgrades in the new Mark III bodies (EM5 and EM1).
@weizenobstmusli8232
@weizenobstmusli8232 4 года назад
Sadly, if you look at their sensor supplier Sony, they don't have a new sensor availible, that suits the EM1 specs. Oly had to go BSI, which today maxes out at 11 fps with AF (on A6600). I think to slow for a EM1. The stacked sensor technology of the A9 is also still not adoptable for sensors with higher pixel pitch. So Oly has to wait. And tbh, it whould make more sense to introduce a new sensor in the flagship.

Great review as usual Gordon. The features and packaging are very endearing, even if they fall short of the very best. Key points - fantastic focus, an absolute must, IBIS, same again and, of course, that flippy screen. With a tough little body and good looks (yes!), and the sensible(?) price, it's almost compelling - for your average enthusiast and a budget to work to. Mmmmm.

Excellent review as always. Your early previews are more complete than most others full reviews. Unless Olympus has another model near the horizon this mark three feels very lacking. I think the point you made about product cycle is the most significant. Although this camera is fine right now for most applications, knowing it will likely be another four years before there is a new sensor in the em1 line makes it a much harder sell and the same is likely true for the em5 and rm10 series. With every player now in the mirrorless business and everyone else on a much faster product cycle it's in a year and a half to two years where this product is likely to really start looking outclassed. It's interesting that for now at least they are keeping the Mark II in production but I think the used Mark II market is going to be this cameras biggest competition. If you can get a Mark II for 300 less without giving up much capability, why not a slightly used Mark II for 800 less, and with the Mark II staying in production they are guaranteeing there will be more Mark IIs moving into the used market. Well, maybe a Pen F II with a new sensor is coming after all.

Hi Gordon, I'm looking forward to watch the full review. I love your videos! I am very happy with my em-1 mark iii. For me, the most important thing for choosing the new Olympus was portability! What other system offers me the compact size and weight of the em-1 iii + Leica 100-400 set? For Wildlife and Birding, with long hikes to the mountains, it is an excellent system. Besides, I already have excellent m43 lenses. In my case the m43 is the perfect system and I hope it continues to exist. I hope to see a GH6 in the coming months! It will be a great sign of vitality and hope for the system after the recent Olympus announcements. Greetings from the Black Forest!

Thanks Gordon, I think you have answered my questions here. I have a EM1 that I'm looking to upgrade. The Mark ii is still a great camera and while it would be nice to have the latest, the price difference is nearly $1,000 in Australia - even more if you compare to internet only suppliers. Faster autofocus (for birds) and high resolution option is what I was chasing. Happy to do high res on tripod.

MuertoInc You bring up a good point. From this point forward, where will the market for the E-M1x reside? This EM1 mk 3 with smaller form factor with basically the same features and lower price point sounds the “death knell” for the M1x, I suspect. I trialed the M1x for a day during a promo event for it when it came out last year, and the weight and size differential from my EM1 Mk2 soured me on upgrading at that time. It’s one pound heavier, I believe, but felt like 3 lbs carrying it around for several hours.

Thank you Gordon. Very well done review. Lots of information to process, as I will watch this review a few more times. I have been shooting Panasonic Lumix, G9 and GH5 for a long time. I wonder if Panasonic will upgrade those cameras. It appears the Olympus auto focus is a lot better. I have a number of Olympus lenses, the 300mm F4, and the 40-150, with the fragile lens shade. Olympus makes great glass. I am just waiting to see if Lumix updates the G9 or moves all the way to full frame. Again, very well one. I'll keep wtching your reviews. All my best!

One thing I wish olympus would do is put an aperture ring on the lenses, then let the front dial control SS and the back dial control EC. My olympus stylus has a control ring on the lense which controls the aperture or SS depending on which mode you are in. I really like this approach.

Thanks for a great review. I really like the AF joystick, but the rest seems less exciting to me. I really like Olympus, but I think I'll spend my money on their lenses or something else. I already have an EM1 Mark ii and that is more than good enough for me. If I had an EM5 mark ii and was looking to upgrade this would be a lot more tempting. Happy to see they're upgrading their line, but I will probably wait for the next iteration.

Excellent overview of the camera. You suggest that there will be a more in depth review coming. Is that still the case, or did you finally decide that this one was enough. As I intend to buy this camera by the end of the year, I am interested in any new videos. As you say, we all have different reasons, and mine might be one you hadn’t considered. I want to buy a Panasonic because of stop motion features which will help me in my university animation courses. I decided to go for the G100 because it is affordable and also is suited to vlogging purposes. But because I am buying MFT lenses, I decided to also get the E-M1 III as well because of stabilisation and superior AF, plus starry night AF. For me it will be a vlogging companion to the G100 which will be more for the animation and creative effects that Panasonic is so good at, and of course the two cameras are small enough to go anywhere and work together for two views out in the field. To me the Olympus is a very exciting camera, but the Olympus company does a lousy job of marketing, much like Panasonic. It stands in stark contrast to Sony, which is the master of marketing. Olympus would struggle to sell a fish in a fish market.

Hi, love the channel. I'm after some advice as I'm at a real crossroads with m 4/3 and OMD 1 mkii. I need an affordable ( no more £300) weathersealeded 25mm but all I can find is the Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm F1.4 II and Olympus for over £500. I would consider a manual focus but that isn't my preference. I already have the SIGMA 16mm F1.4 DC DN, which is great and affordable I just need something similar for 50mm equivalent (second hand lenses under £300 don't seem available). It seems crazy that I have a weather sealed camera but the most popular lens isn't accessible. I am considering changing systems if I can't get the above, any suggestions or alternatives would be very much appreciated Cheers

Hi Gordon, as always with you a nicely presented video full of facts. For me, not having touched a 4K video feature in the last 2 years, I am perfectly fine with the sensor in the EM1 III. I actually like it that we are now seeing evolution rather than revolution in new camera models in the MFT world. I feel that there is more fine tuning in the bodies from the manufactures than it would be if there would be always a brand new killer feature which has to be brought to market asap. I would be happy with either of the EM1s.

Another great review. Do you have any insight as to why Olympus doesn't add competitive video features to their cameras? The hardware in this and many of the other Olympus models is likely capable, it seems that only the firmware is lacking. And unlike Panasonic, Olympus has no professional video camera division to get in the way. Were they to release an Olympus equivalent to the GH5, but with PDAF, can only imagine how well it would sell. A terrible missed opportunity.

I think for me the question is more as an Olympus shooter, does it make sense to upgrade fromm m1 Mii to this one. Eventhough I like a lot of the new features but it is a lot of money. I use an E-M1 I with 90mm, 180mm and 300mm legacy MF lenses, and the latter with a 1.4x TC giving 420mm, or 840mm FF equivalent, all hand held, and I find the IBIS, even of several generations ago, very useful and effective. I doubt a camera with several stops better IBIS than I have would have any problem delivering significant utility at focal lengths greater than 40mm.

CWB Ray I recently took some panning shots and you definitely need to get the right IS settings. Panning cars I set my EM1ii to vertical shake only and it made a massive difference. This was on the 12-100 at the long end going down to 1/30s On my first try I accidentally left it on in all directions and testament to the amazing IS, many of them came out with a sharp background 🙄🙂 I didn’t try real slow then as I knew something was going wrong.

Shame that we're still using the same sensor, mft seems like it's lagging in getting access to improvements like bsi, variable exposure hdr video, readout speed, and the like.

The GH5s has a m4/3 BSI sensor - go to Dpreview and look at their studio scene test shot images and compare it's images to an E-M5. That's right, the original 2012 E-M5. Personally I don't see what the fuss is about BSI on larger sensors..

Although the G9 is an amazing camera with more video options (an better video codec), a better EVF and a cleaner fully touch menu system than the Olympus EM1 mark 3. The Olympus stands out with its phase detection continual auto-focus and better stabilization. For birds in flight photos and video, the Olympus outperforms the Panasonic with a better keeping rate (the evf keeps up on Olympus while the G9 show the last frame). The arrival of the new 150-400mm f/4.5 lens (with internal 1.4x teleconverter) will be a turning point for Olympus user’s looking for wildlife photography and videography. Face and eye tracking are much better on the Olympus for wedding photos and video, (thanks to a fast phase detection continuous auto-focus). For bracketing photos, the Olympus offers a much broader range indoor or real estate photos (Max EV range in AEB, Olympus 14, Panasonic 8). Handheld hires, internal electronic ND filter and autofocus starry AF are fantastic assets not found on Panasonic! Olympus has two types of internal HDR. The IBIS is superior on Olympus, no video "wobbling" with electronic stabilization for Vlogging. A 2 sec pro-capture is truly incredible! In addition, the Olympus camera is smaller, more discreet for street photography. In addition, Olympus PRO lenses with fixed aperture are outstanding build quality while the Olympus f/1.8 prime lens are cheap and still deliver amazing images quality (just not weather sealed though). Olympus camera are more customizable, just more options to fine tune. Olympus has a lens "roadmap" when there is nothing to advertise at Panasonic. Weather sealing at Olympus is the best in the industry. Not to mention that the Olympus comes with an external flash for the price!

I'm assuming the fade occurs after contstant use, so buying a new II or III would resolve that. They're quite similar, so go gor whichever has the least use if buying 2nd hand.

Given your objective loyalty to Olympus over the years Gordon, it's pathetic that Olympus didn't send you on the Costa Rica trip instead of the simulated jungle at Kew. The best review of all by the way, not focused on the presenter as some do (who mentioned DP?), and not a fanboy looking for a future launch trip.

Better body for birds in flight that the G9 because it has two types of autofocus and the stabilization in the body makes stabilization in a lens such as the Panasonic-Leica 100-400mm unnecessary? Locking on autofocus for birds in flight would provide me with a light system but with better continuous autofucus? Olympus has some nice lenses also.

Is the kit lense for this camera the 12-40 f2.8? Very nice camera but our local store has it at $2,500. Fairly expensive when you consider you can get an xt4 for 2,100 or the Sony a7iv for $2,700. These are all great but the Olympus seems over priced.

Yet another great review however I really don't think there are significant improvements in this model to justify an upgrade from the em1 Mark ii. I was hoping for a new sensor, improved evf and touchscreen. I'm not sure what Olympus business model is but apart from the improved IBIS and weather sealing does this system make sense in a world of similarly priced full frame mirrorless systems?
@joeltunnah
@joeltunnah 2 года назад
Yes, this system makes a lot of sense to me. The lenses for FF are twice the size and weight, and in many cases twice the price too. So I don’t really care if a FF body is cheaper and the same size. And the IBIS will never be as good as MFT, that’s just physics.

Hi Gordon - excellent first looks as usual.Took me a bit by surprise that one. Heard the rumours about the Mk III but wasn’t holding my breath. Went for the EM5 mk III which I got some early hands on and then realised that I could get a em 1 Mk II for £50 more. No brainer in my book - so an EM 1 Mk II replaced my trusty EM 5 Mk II. I just love Olympus cameras but from your initial review I can’t say I’m eager to upgrade, as I can’t see any major advantage to be gained for the price. I do wonder where Olympus are heading with the MFT format. Regards Fergus Buchanan

@@cameralabs I agree 100% with one exception....it's one thing to release a new product every 6 months to a year with minor enhancements, another to wait 3 to 4 years to release a new camera with 3 year old components and charge more. At the very least update the EVF and sensor. With everyone using phones for photography today, camera companies need to excite existing customer to upgrade. This will keep the money flowing into R&D for future products.

Thank you for this review. It's as all times very good. For me, these Things are great: - Handheld HighRes (Some times ago, many people said: this will never posiible) - Much better face- and eye-detection (also with much improvement since the last firmware-upgrade for the Mark II, this fails in the Mark II) - joystick (yeah!) - Inside ND-Filters (sadly not for filming) - mymenu All these things I miss in my Mark II, which I love otherwise. With EFV and sreen, I have no problems. 60 FPS in 4K would be nice, but its not a must to have for me. Better HighISO-performance (less noise) would also be great, but I think, Sony will not give Olympus & Co. such a new sensor in next time. Best regards Andreas
