This is my process for focusing with my OM-1 for Wildlife Photography. When the AI focus fails to find the animal I go through my step by step process for getting sharp images.

I know some of you may have already seen this as it was in the end of my video on back button focus, but I got a lot of messages saying it was very useful so I thought I would make a separate short video of it and also include how to set it up.

Thanks for that. My AF setup was very similar to what you showed here, this shows a way of streamlining what I had worked out and should provide better results.

Interesting I have set my camera up exactly like you have. Some people suggest 6x6 or cross but I find that all points active works most of the time and if i doesn't than I go strait to single point. One thing I also use focus peaking in maual assist but I also use the zoom feature in focus assist as just helps a little more with manual focus.

Sometimes a play around with smaller focus patterns, if I struggle with a little articular species.

Best OM-1 settings video I’ve watched by far. Clear. To the point. Learned many new things. Thanks!

Thanks for a very informative video. I sometimes find focussing a problem with the OM1. This will surely help.

In difficult situations you may have to tweak with manual focus and Espens video nails that :-)

I dont use BBF but use have Manual Focus available at all times in CAF with peaking- works well just keep the shutter half pressed and twist the focus ring, when in focus push shutter button all the way, there is a setting where pushing shutter button does not override manual focus, works for me :-)

Hey Espen. Quick question. You mention switching to going to single point focus in the middle. You focus and recompose. Don't you lose focus on the target then when you recompose because the focus point moves away? Or do you release the focus button? Would it also be possible to move the focus point or is it fixed to the middle? Sorry for the burst if questions, I am orientating on getting a used OM-1.

If I have time I move the focus point, you can do that with the joystick or on the screen if it’s setup for it. Sometimes I leave the subject in the middle and crop in post, especially if it’s really fast. Mostly I don’t find that focus is lost by recomposing, but this depends on what focal length you have and how close you are. The closer you are the more chance of that happening. Mostly I’m not close enough for that to be an issue.

Another very helpful video. Thank you, Espen! Quick question: I don't know if you only use a tripod when doing a video like this, but I'm wondering if you've been using a tripod since getting the 150-400mm. Do you use the Heipi? Do you find it is solid enough not to have too much vibration with that lens?
@nknahakata
@nknahakata 11 месяцев назад
Maybe i can answer :) Got the OM-1 with the 150-400 for a couple of weeks now and 99% of the time i use it without a tripod. first couple of days were a but "difficult" but i got used to handling it really quick. now im as good with the 150-400 as i was with the smaller 100-400 before.

@@nknahakata - thanks for your reply! I just got my 150-400 after waiting almost a year. I have not had a lot of chance to use it yet, but have been very pleasantly surprised to find that I can handhold it fairly well.

I sometimes use the heipi for video yes, it does the job in some cases, but I think a heavy video tripod is going to be the best for really smooth footage. Especially when filming long sequences. I often film handheld, but usually I can only use 3-5 sec before there’s a little shake. More than enough for a vlog, but not for anything more grand.

On your SCP, it appears that the exposure compensation is -3. Please explain. Thank you.

Probably because I was shooting backlit. It was a dark forest, but the light coming through the trees was very bright so had to darken it to not blow out highlights on the wings.

I was wondering if you have ever had the issue of the camera not being able to focus when you switch the lever from single focus point (position 1) to all focus points (position 2)? It has happened to me a few times, but it took me a while to figure out what was happening. I called OM support, and they told me it was a quirk, and I should not be concerned.

Greetings from India.. to get the subject into focus, do you use the BBF and then let the subject AI detection take over or there is no requirement for using BBF when subject AI is active. Thanks
@EspenHelland
@EspenHelland 11 месяцев назад
When using C-AF with AI detection the AI will find the subject, but to actually acquire focus you press either BBF or half press shutter (whichever you setup).

@@EspenHelland thanks much for the clarification. I misunderstood what you said in the video so was hoping that camera would focus magically 🙂
