In this video, I look back over images and videos that I have taken during 2023. I have selected what I consider to be my favourite shots, and I finish the video showing what I consider to be my best three images . Do you think these are the best shots, or do you maybe prefer some of the others ? Let me know in the comments.

Thanks for another great video Richard mine was also the starlings. The work you put in to that shop makes it deserving and worthwhile. It’s okay having top-class equipment you need to put the effort in great shorts do not just happened. My150 to 400 lens should be here within the next couple of weeks could’ve got it earlier but I bought it from a local independent shop in Cambridge. I congratulate you on this wonderful work. I think that all the pictures are wonderful and special in their own way. From a photographer's perspective, I would probably choose the Starling as the best shot. However, with a little luck and a lot of perseverance, I'm very sure you would most certainly be able to take all of the pictures (or very similar) ones again - except for the picture Cuckoo´s mating. It is probably only possible to see a similar scene in front of the lens once in a photographer's life - and then being able to capture them so perfectly. As a nature lover and observer, I once had the same luck with a couple of Barn Swallows (but without a camera). This Scene lasted maybe 2 seconds and for me, years later, it is still one of the most special observations I was able to make. So, I am very happy for you and can only congratulate. Thank you for sharing it and best wishes for 2024 :-)

I keep looking at that image Roger and the more I look at it the more impressed I become. Despite being fascinated by birds, we rarely saw a cuckoo on a post (we usually saw their rather clumsy and undulating flight between trees), let alone a cock and hen mating AND facing the camera. A rare, astonishing and unique photo if ever I saw one! Again well done done Roger👌

@@Henry30065 Thanks Henry. It was just one of those very rare occasions when everything just came together perfectly. The chap who took us there said that you could probably go 100 times, and still not be lucky enough to get that. The previous year it had happened but they had mated facing away from the hide.

For what it is worth, had I been fortunate enough to have captured the images you showed Roger, my choices would have been: 3rd place the Green Woodpecker next to the Apple; 2nd place, the bickering Kestrel and the Jay; 1st place, the stunning and unique photo of the mating Cuckoos on the fence post. The Cuckoo image has convinced me to subscribe to your channel. All the best Roger. Henry

The sound of the Cuckoo is such a rare thing these days, sadly I may go for a couple of years in between hearing them. I remember as a 10 year old finding a baby Cuckoo doing what they do best in a Blackbird nest, that sighting has never left me. Your shot really is something else. The Starling is a wonderful shot, an everyday bird captured showing a unique pose.

Marvellous series of images Roger, thank you for posting. The starling shot is my favourite that low level really adds an additional special element to the action captured. The mating cuckoo’s is also a spectacular image given that the stars aligned it’s also worthy of number 1. I also like the Jay and Kestrel shot as I’m a sucker for species interactions!!. The Naddel valley shot is magical, however I slightly prefer the Crummock water shot as you really have captured the essence of the Lake District in Autumn. Fabulous set of images Roger and good that they are a mixed bunch showing your skills with both wildlife and landscape photography. For me its the fighting Starlings, that low down level perspective clearly showing the confrontation and the fact that you took it in your own self-made and sited hide, Closely followed by the "Mist in the Naddal valley.

Hello Roger, first of all, wonderful shots, all of them. However, if I were to pick just three - solely considering how aesthetically pleasing each photo is, the amount of effort put in nothwithstanding - I would have to go with 1) cuckoos mating - the rareness of the scene captured + the silky smooth, blurry background are simply no match; 2) Starlings fighting - even more dynamic than the first one although not that interesting a scene, in my view, also the background seems messier just a tad; 3) since my second life passion (first chronologically) - birdwatcher lubuski here, this is my 2nd channel - apart from birds is mountains, at least 1 of those splendid landscape shots had to make it to the podium and I find the autumn, slightly side-lit one with the majestic, beautifully-lit (the low autumn sun terrifically 'sculpted' the terrain of the rocky summit, clearly delineating the deep gullies veiled in dark shadows, from the well lit pillars in between them - such shot would not be possible e.g. in the summer at this time of day) mountain as the main subcjet (Crommock water was it?) the most easy on the eye. Merry Christmas season and a Happy upcoming New Year, Roger! All the best!

Thanks you for the very kind comment. Its very much appreciated. The Cuckoo`s mating was indeed my first choice, but because I had not set it up myself, I felt it was unfair to have it as first. Best wishes for 2024.
@markrogers256
@markrogers256 7 месяцев назад
It'd be very difficult to pick the best images, they're all excellent. If someone held a gun to my head to choose top three I'd agree with the Starlings as number one; although a common bird and regularly fighting, your action shot is superb and their plumage is so striking and photogenic which you've captured brilliantly. The Cuckoo shot is of course a contender mainly due to the fact it is a once in a lifetime shot, but I rather like the singing Skylark, so that'd be a hard choice. As for the landscape, I prefer the Crummock Water one over the Naddel Valley mist shot; the Autumn colours are fantastic (so often people manage to make Autumn colours way ott in their pictures) and the reflections on the water are fantastic. So I'd say 1) Starlings Fighting 2) Skylark Singing 3) Crummock Water I tend to judge pictures by which I'd most like hanging on my wall...it's very different judging your own work as memories go with the shots too, which will have an influence 😊
@rogerhance5883
@rogerhance5883 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for the kind comment mark. As you say, the memories that go with the shots will always influence the decision. When I took the Cuckoo shot, I thought at the time -` I will not take a better shot this year`. I still think its probably the best shot, just because of the rareness of the image. Good shots of Cuckoo`s mating are not very common. The fact that I had not done any of the `ground work` for the shot, influenced my decision. The Starlings were all my own work. The Skylark is a lovely shot, but was reasonably easy to take.The Crummock Water shot was another fairly easy shot, although the colours and the refelection were so nice , I had to include it. Once again, thanks for commenting, and best wishes for 2024.

Thank you for a very kind comment Paul. I always try to give as much information as possible. Some photographers are a bit secretive about how they take their pictures, but I dont see the point in that. Best wishes for 2024.

What a fabulous set of images and the squabbling starlings is my number 1 but find it impossible to choose 2nd and 3rd place. They are all stunning. Thank you for all your posts throughout 2023 and for sharing your wealth of knowledge. Happy New Year Roger and I'm already looking forward to enjoying more of your videos in 2024.

Roger, loved seeing all these in review! That one of Wastwater is probably my favorite, though all your landscape photos were phenomenal! Love your channel..... your calm demeanor and pleasant, simple approach to videos sure is more my speed than most of what I see on RU-vid.

Hi Roger… an excellent series of shots and I fully agree with your final three although the Jay Kestrel is also fantastic I think the Starlings just pipped it for first place… the Cuckoos are incredible. Love watching your vids as I like you have the same gear which I’ve had since the 150-400 was released. The combination of this lens with the 1.4x and the OM1 is simply the best. Merry Christmas… Paul

Cheers Paul. Glad you agreed with my selection, although it is all a bit subjective. Judging by the comments, it appears the Kestrel and Jay shot has been well recieved. I will be bringing out some new videos in the new year. All the best for 2024.

@@rogerhance5883 be interesting to see if there is a difference as that lens is incredible already although I have heard that the second production was not made in Japan and people say it’s not as good as the first release… which I have luckily

A super retrospective Roger and Merry Christmas to you on this fine day. It’s so difficult to choose from such quality images and we’ll all have a slightly different view on which is exactly best, but for me I’d go for the GSW in flight, the Starlings fighting and the Cuckoo’s. I can understand exactly why you’d choose the Starlings, but as an independent assessor I’d go for the Cuckoo’s. Wishing you a great 2024 and I’m sure everyone’s looking forward to seeing more fabulous videos.😀

Great lot of shots Roger, amazing choices. I think the Cookoo shot definitely deserves to be in the top 3. Love the curlew shot and then its between the woodpecker and feildfare shot for me. Both equally beautiful! Merry Christmas Roger, thanks for all the incredible photography videos and shots this year. ❤️
