OMA and Hassell completes top-heavy WA Museum Boola Bardip in Perth

Architecture firms OMA and Hassell have renovated a group of old buildings in Perth, Australia, and stitched them together with protruding metal-clad structures to create the WA Museum Boola Bardip.
The top-heavy museum celebrates the history and contemporary culture of Western Australia and is intended as a new landmark for Perth Cultural Centre - a group of cultural institutions in the city.

I loved the golden staircase area, but from the entrance until there felt like a bland, anywhere airport. I don’t like the modernist block above the Victorian building - it looks like a block of concrete is threatening to destroy it, though I did like the modernist elements elsewhere, they seemed much better balanced. The exhibits look fun and interesting which is the main goal of the museum, I imagine.

Wow, it seems that people in Perth really have no qualms about introducing more and more hideous modern monstrosities in their historically beautiful city. This thing is as ugly as the Federation Square in Melbourne, if not more so, especially when in stark contrast with the historic building it now dominates.
