Omaha is the largest city in the state of Nebraska and the county seat of Douglas County. Omaha is in the Midwestern United States on the Missouri River, about 10 miles (15 km) north of the mouth of the Platte River. The nation's 40th-largest city, Omaha's 2018 estimated population was 466,061.
Omaha is the anchor of the eight-county, bi-state Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area. The Omaha Metropolitan Area is the 59th largest in the United States, with an estimated population of 944,316 (2018). The Omaha-Council Bluffs-Fremont, NE-IA Combined Statistical Area (CSA) encompasses the Omaha-Council Bluffs MSA as well as the separate Fremont, NE Micropolitan Statistical Area, which consists of the entirety of Dodge County, Nebraska. The total population of the CSA was 970,023 based on 2017 estimates. Approximately 1.3 million people reside within the Greater Omaha area, within a 50 mi (80 km) radius of Downtown Omaha.
Omaha's pioneer period began in 1854, when the city was founded by speculators from neighboring Council Bluffs, Iowa. The city was founded along the Missouri River, and a crossing called Lone Tree Ferry earned the city its nickname, the "Gateway to the West". Omaha introduced this new West to the world in 1898, when it played host to the World's Fair, dubbed the Trans-Mississippi Exposition. During the 19th century, Omaha's central location in the United States spurred the city to become an important national transportation hub. Throughout the rest of the 19th century, the transportation and jobbing sectors were important in the city, along with its railroads and breweries. In the 20th century, the Omaha Stockyards, once the world's largest, and its meatpacking plants gained international prominence.
Today, Omaha is the home to the headquarters of four Fortune 500 companies: mega-conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway; one of the world's largest construction companies, Kiewit Corporation; insurance and financial firm Mutual of Omaha; and the United States' largest railroad operator, Union Pacific Corporation. Berkshire Hathaway is headed by local investor Warren Buffett, one of the richest people in the world, according to a decade's worth of Forbes Magazine rankings, some of which have ranked him as high as No. 1.
Omaha is also the home to five Fortune 1000 headquarters: Green Plains Renewable Energy, TD Ameritrade, Valmont Industries, Werner Enterprises, and West Corporation. Also headquartered in Omaha are the following: First National Bank of Omaha, the largest privately held bank in the United States; three of the nation's largest 10 architecture/engineering firms (DLR Group, HDR, Inc., and Leo A Daly; and the Gallup Organization, of Gallup Poll fame, and its riverfront Gallup University.
Notable modern Omaha inventions include the following: the "pink hair curler" created at Omaha's Tip Top Products; Butter Brickle Ice Cream and the Reuben sandwich, conceived by a chef at the then-Blackstone Hotel on 36th and Farnam Streets; cake mix, developed by Duncan Hines, then a division of Omaha's Nebraska Consolidated Mills, the forerunner to today's ConAgra Foods; center-pivot irrigation by the Omaha company now known as Valmont Corporation; Raisin Bran, developed by Omaha's Skinner Macaroni Co.; the ski lift, in 1936, by Omaha's Union Pacific Corp; the Top 40 radio format, pioneered by Todd Storz, scion of Omaha's Storz Brewing Co. and head of Storz Broadcasting, and first used in the U.S. at Omaha's KOWH Radio; and the TV dinner, developed by Omaha's Carl Swanson Co.

So much has changed last year, "The Riverfront" will fully open next month, its x3 large parks connected to the riverside of 72 acres. There are plenty of apartment complexes being built in downtown and we are in the process of building a taller all glass skyscraper and even a streetcar that will run through downtown, parks and connect Council Bluffs.

@@cocotaveras8975 ok, can you elaborate on the "but not boring" part? I just finished an interview with a company in Omaha but am considering the move from Springfield, Illinois without knowing much about Omaha. My assumption is that no town can be boring when its population is .5MM people yet people insist oh it's boring. But they never define what that constitutes exactly and likewise proponents of Omaha never really tell me what there is to do other than a few highlights like a theater. Even this drive through didn't tell me much since all I saw were a bunch of borg cubes lining every street. Where are all the people???

@one2htx596
@one2htx596 4 года назад
So my comment was posted as a response to another, my bad...anyways, Omaha is much larger and much more lively than portraited in this video. This was obviously shot on a Sunday morning. Downtown Omaha is much more lively at night and on every other day of the week. We have the old market, the capitol district, CHI center and Gene Leahy Mall and Heartland Of America Park, which is currently going through a multi million dollar renovation right now. You can always find plenty of action on the North and South sides of Omaha...never a boring moment, as every Omahaan knows. The west side has plenty of mansions and very upscale businesses and neighborhoods. Omaha has the awkward uniqueness of being one of the richest and poorest cities in America. You have no idea what we are unless you come see it yourself, and see everything.
@marksmith4892
@marksmith4892 4 года назад
There's a strong possibility I will have been selected for employment there within the next week so I've been trying to determine what there is to DO there other than own a big house and nothing else. Can you offer specifics?? I mean the average age there is 35, and there are half a million people but every video drive through or walk through, including the places you listed, look like ghost towns, empty streets. I noticed that they have a lot of small lakes and golf courses around so that's good, but ffs what else?? Are there interest clubs? Unique activities? Traditional celebrations? Does the university host things for the public such as, oh, I don't know, astronomy events or interesting speakers? What about concerts or plays with professional actors? Surely half a million people aren't so boring that they sit at home all day.

@marksmith4892
@marksmith4892 7 месяцев назад
@@Jupiter1423 actually i ended up going in the opposite direction to Cleveland. Within city limits, it's as awful as everybody says it is, like inner city Detroit-lite but what people don't know until they get here is that regionally, people include all the surrounding suburbs as "Cleveland" and all the regions encircling Cleveland city limits are beautiful and affluent. Also there's downtown that the police have essentially cordoned off from the rest of the city, so that too is accessible and beautiful. There is a lot to do here with a young demographic so I'm glad I moved here instead of Omaha but still I work in health insurance and there are a TON of health insurers located right in Omaha so it's very possible I might find myself there one day if the $ is irresistible. Oh and speaking of insurance companies, I am surprised that Omaha is not exploding because there are no better financial entities to ensure a city's expansion than ins cos. The reason is that insurance is designed to weather all financial storms, that is, in economic expansions, they don't do phenomenally well, but in recessions they don't do poorly either, and what this means is that you will always have an economic base bringing in steady, reliable cash. Other businesses less resilient can then grow up around insurance companies because they know their market will not dry up in recession with the ins cos there. It's a huge market signal, and Omaha is loaded with (national) ins cos.

Quite simply, the Omaha metro area doesn't have the population amount to support any major pro sports teams. There are 12 larger populated metro areas in the lower 48 that don't have any pro teams as well. The 2 largest metro areas without any pro sports teams are the Virginia Beach/ Norfolk, VA metro area with a population of 1.73 M and the Providence, RI metro area which has a population of 1.62 M. In comparison, the population of metro Omaha is 942 k.

Don't know who you got your directions from, but they were way off base, plus you went in a circle. You showed the worst part of downtown. You needed to be on the main thoroughfare...Dodge Street...to get a fair represenration. I grew up and graduated high school in Omaha. I was really disappointed!
