Thanks!!!! I took in a trade with an omc that's over heating and they found parts of the old impeller in the thermostat housing

Been years I know but regarding that hole. Polly would just tap the housing for threads and through a brass plug in it.

I had to take the outdrive apart to get the washer out and it was still a pain in the butt to put it back together. I had to replace the risers and manifolds with mercruiser parts. In turn had to customize the exhaust. Apparently I'm a boat mechanic now lol

What about the nut and washer? Won't they fall in to a moving part and cause an issue? I unknowingly pulled that plug on mine 2 days ago. I could see the nut and washer laying I side. I used a stiff piece of wire, bent one end to 90⁰ and hooked them. Then I took a 1 inch 3/8ths bolt and drilled a hole threw it. I put a flanged nut on it with the flange facing the end of the bolt. I put a rubber o ring in it. I then pulled the wire threw the bolt, holding the nut and washer and managed to get it threaded and tighted down. I pulled out the wire and plugged the hole. I think I got lucky not to have to pull the outdrive off.

Very nice fix! Yes, some have had that bolt and washer lodge in the water passages and cause low water flow and overheating issues. I've since had my drive off for other issues and couldn't find those anywhere. Good point though!!

I’m curious as to why it’s there in the first place? What purpose does the bolt serve other than to give you grief if and when it’s removed?

From what I understand, it was only used in the manufacturing process. Kind of silly though if you ask me.

Hey is that a 351 Windsor 5.8 cobra because I have a 5.8 Cobra four win and I'm trying to see where the rotor supposed to be in a timing mark supposed to be . If you got that answer, I appreciate it.

@@chriscorter5035 First remove your distributor cap so you can see your rotor, Next make sure that you’re number one cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke! Your rotor should be facing the number one terminal on your distributor cap when you install it! If you have to install your distributor because it was removed it is pretty much the same procedure! Make sure that you’re number one cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke! With your distributor cap installed on the distributor find the number one terminal, Next follow that number one terminal straight down the side of the cap and make a mark on the base of the distributor that aligns with the number one terminal! Remove your distributor cap so you can see your rotor, With your engine at top dead center on the compression stroke install your distributor and make sure that when it is fully seated that the rotor is facing the mark you made on the base of distributor! On Fords you should have timing marks on your balancer and a pointer on your timing cover, Make sure that you can read the numbers on your balancer! Grab yourself a timing light and set the timing to whatever the specs are and your done!

Hi everyone I have 1991 four winns boat omc cobra 5.8 liter. I have overheating problems. When I try it in my house of course with water hose. I changed the thermostat. and when I run it for 10 min it starts the temperature go up to overheating please any one can help me solve the problem thanks

Could be lots of different things. Water pump, impeller, clogged water passages, blown head gasket just to name a few. I would start by checking the impeller.

I really hope that this is your boat and you’re not fixing it for someone else, Your work is crappy and your knowledge is minimal! Removing your engine mounts and moving the motor around without removing your sterndrive was your second mistake, Your third mistake was installing your motor mounts and running your engine without even knowing if your engine is aligned properly! I can go on and on I just hope that nobody uses this video in hopes of learning something, I have been a Mechanic for the past 25 years and I have owned an Auto and Marine Business for the past 8! I don’t care if people want to do their own work or not it’s when I see videos like this with improper procedures, I can’t even count how many times a customer has come to the shop because they watched a video like this and ended up causing more damage to their vehicle!

Well let’s get back to business at hand, the part of the video that helped me is the cooling issue. I am not sure I can send pictures or not but I will explain the best I can, on my 3.8 thermostat housing the hose coming from the out drive is not in the same place as yours, My temp reads 220* the engine appears to be cool. I would like some input Thanks

I would get a laser thermometer and check the temperature of your heads. Your gauge or your temp sensor could be bad. If it does in fact read 220, then I would check your impeller. If it's ever been run without water flowing to it, those things can melt down really quick. Other than that, start pulling hoses off and checking for good water flow.

@@ProjectDIY2 Thanks for the input I believe I salved my cooling issue, The hose coming from the sterndrive was on the exit port on the thermostat housing, after moving to the inlet port of the housing I ran the boat about 25 min temp never got over 175* Testing was in a 55 gal bbl thanks
