Looking at Lee's 2nd-Gen 42mm Omega Planet Ocean and sizing it up against his Tudor Black Bay GMT, and contemplating the watch madness that is our life.
Never get rid of your Seiko’s,Even if you get one of those Swiss watches.come on McMahon you know you can’t sell the tunas, You are just going to re-buy them, why because you love them,Just don’t turn into Archie luxury
You have to admire AC3 for saying out loud what the subtext of watches _really_ is: it’s all about the logo and the money, there is no whoreological excellence in most of these luxury brand watches.
Sadly you're wrong you should never even buy a seiko to begin with. They're disposable and go get one serviced. It's the sale price as buying a new one and you still own a garbage watch. Friends dont let friends buy a seiko
I just wanted to share, that I've done what most of the watch obsessives dream of, and sold my entire collection of 9 low/mid tier watches, and got an Omega PO and a G shock . Since one week I live like a one watch person as I use my g shock only for timing my workouts and the rest of the time I wear my Omega. It was a big relief and for now it feels like I found my exit watch.
@@yleexot I am ashamed to admit that I couldn't pull off this "one watch thing" . I bought recently a Sinn 356 and i can not even enjoy it as it feels like it sounds.. a sin. The Omega is still great I cannot think of a better watch, but it's not enough for me.. for now.
You bring up a good point how these new big boy watches have made you unexpectedly appreciate your Seiko watches more... THAT'S exactly the magic and power of expanding your horizons. That should be very encouraging for you to feel like this. There's no reason why you shouldn't continue to experience more in Swiss tier of watches, because as you are now experiencing, it DEEPENS your appreciation of the hobby. Nothing to be scared of here! Enjoy the ride!
All the anti-scratch coatings are great! Citizen’s Duratech, Traska’s steel hardening, RZE’s Ultrahex have all worked wonderfully for me. _Should_ be a more common and standard feature but, surprise surprise, the Swiss shitter cartel isn’t having it. Would cut in to their polishing business.
Fun review! I have a few nicks in my 43.5 Planet Ocean, but I seriously wear it for all manner of stupid things. I've planted a tree wearing it. Afterwards, I thought, "Why am I wearing this to plant trees?" but what the heck. It keeps about +1 sec/day and it's just a tank. I love the broad arrow hands, the applied Omega logo, and the orange highlights just make me happy. Haha about Bruce and Rob - I had the joy of meeting Bruce at a wings meet up a while back and he's a hoot. There's my brush with fame. :-)
Yeah the wave dial on the seamaster really bothers me. Love the flat color on the planet ocean. I saw the SPB167 in the metal and that hemp dial is lovely. Same as the new seiko gmt. If my AD had the new gmt available I'd probably have it as I write this. Will keep you posted.
I gotta tell you, McMahon. That Planet Ocean is WAAAAAAAY more “you” than that Tudor. I look at that Omega and think: “This looks like the sort of watch that a recovering Seikomasochist who works out with kettle bells and religiously eats buckwheat groats every morning would wear.” Now whoever is out there, please don’t think of sending McMahon a 43mm Sea Dweller, or a James Cameron Deep Sea. He might have a second existential crisis.
Improvements over the first-generation Planet Ocean include an exhibition case back to showcase the inhouse 8500 movement (first-gen were based off the ETA 2892-A2), larger indices, applied numerals, orange Seamaster text, a more streamlined bracelet design, matte ceramic insert and see thru caseback just to name a few. NO CONTEST!
I own both of these watches and they are each great in their own way. The only knock I have on the Omega is the bezel action feels much flimsier than Tudor bezels in general. If the Planet Ocean bezel clicked like a Tudor it would be tough to beat.
Take the plunge McMahon! Do it and step into Swiss luxury! As much as I love the Black Bays....I think the style and feel of the Seamasters....PO's especially......speak more to me. But I do like how the Tudor's don't have that helium valve.
Maybe you can get your hands on a Pelagos as well. I love mine . A black one is so damn versatile and good looking that I'm also considering selling most of my watches and sticking to the Pelagos and 1-2 others .
Planet Ocean…That’s more like it! Pairs nicely with the Willard. But Omega and Seiko are my favorite brands. Still think you need to try on the Black Bay steel though. Hope someone can send one in for you to try out.
I recently purchased a new 43.5mm planet ocean. The accuracy is staggering. In the first 4 weeks I owned it, the watch gained only 2 seconds. I did not believe it, so I checked it against the GMT website and it was true. I have owned a number of watches over the years and, apart from a couple of quartz ones, I have never owned a timepiece that is so accurate. The Omega website gave the accuracy for my particular watch as +3 seconds per day so I am not sure what happened after it left the factory, but I am not complaining. On an aside, it's also a great watch to wear.
@@JeffreyMcMahon I have only wound it once when I first received the watch. It has been on my wrist ever since, and I have no reason to adjust the time so far. The action was very smooth although you could feel a slight resistance as you were obviously winding the watch. The build quality is, as you would expect from Omega, excellent. It's a large and heavy watch, but has great presence on the wrist and I got used to it very quickly. I considered the Seamaster 300 professional, but for some reason, I just did not like the skeleton hands. It's a great timepiece and anyone purchasing this watch would not regret it and, although I can't speak for every Omega, it is astonishingly accurate.
I would just opt out for a submariner and call it a day but I still think your better off with highend seikos.....what model citizen do you have coming from Spain?
Both the tudor and the omega are too thick. That's why the bb58 was such a hit. I tried on a omega globemaster today, but again too thick. I know you like a chunky beast on your wrist so either are great for you. Although I think the pelagos is the best tudor model of a dive watch. I actually prefer the original planet ocean with the orange bezel, and they were slimmer. If you want a tough quality Swiss dive watch , that can be sporty and elegant , then the rado captain cook is half the price of these two. That said the Willard looks as good as these two , if not better . You have to think long and hard if your going to make that next step up Jeff. Personally I still think the 051 is seikos best modern diver for the money. The domed sapphire and indices are just superb. At 42mm it's a good beefy size that suits the bigger guy. Imho only the Willard can compare.
I'd go the Tudor. I like Pepsi. Though the Seiko is still best bang for buck, and that is why you can't wipe the smile off your face when you go back there after seeing the expensive Swiss stuff.
I have both watches and they are both amazing time pieces you should just get yourself an Omega or the Tudor BB get rid of a bunch of your seiko and citizen watches and get your self a man's watch my friend!
McMahon Re watch your own video. You are foreshadowing what you will do. You will sell most of your mid tier stuff and Buy either that PO or a black bay. You can get great deals on pre owned black bays. I would stay away from the black bay gmt due to the date wheel issues that do not yet seem to have been corrected according to the forums. Good luck sir
My take-home from this video: the Seiko Captain Willard pretty much stands toe to toe with the Omega Planet Ocean. And it's, what, a third of the price?
Sorry, but not really. The Omega movement is a certified chronometer which runs -3+4 or so not only if your lucky. This is guaranteed from Omega. The dial, hands and index quality is for more refined (dial and indexes are a lot of the watch costs). The PO ocean bezel will not lock up, in case the watch got dirty. The Omega bracelet has a usable quick-adjust. The Willard is not as top-heavy as the PO. You can see and feel the 3-4 times of the cost in the PO. I have the SLA033 Willard, which is a little bit closer to the PO. But don't get the illusion that these watches are toe to toe.
@@markusf6964 Fair enough. But i still contend that on straight “cool factor” the Willard is right there with the PO. But both are great watches, all good. Just having fun here.
You are not going to like that new Citizen at 46mm and I guarantee you will flip it within 4 months. Skip the Tudor and get the PO if you can. You will not have any watch regret if you pick it up. Gently used Omega PO's can be had for decent money vs. new. G for it YOLO.
I went to Rolex and saw Tudor GMT and Pelagos and I was impressed nearly to buy one but I said to take a look at Omega and the moment I got OP on my wrist you can clearly see the difference. No offense to Tudor but compare PO is like they sell toys.
@@Eric_Nielsen I probably won't do it. Lee was an exception because I've known him for so long. While it would be great to review other watches, I think the stress and anxiety of making sure everyone got their timepieces back in perfect shape would take the fun out of it.
Each time you put the two watches together you bump them into each other. I cringe every single time I see it. Please stop, you create scratches. These are not Seikos :)
What's stopping You to spend 2.500 on more modern looking, more tool looking, less elegant looking, and what is important a watch that You won't find on the wrists of men of certain age. Sinn, Damasko.
if you got a Tudor GMT which is not a lemon, = 'born bad' then i'm happy for you, but i wont get one before Tudor get their shit together, and start making GMT's that dont have fucking problems with the date function, it's been a problem since 2018, and Tudor just wont address it, their'l let the AD's do the talking for them, promising the customers that everything's allright now, bull shit, it's not.
