I had the blue planet ocean on leather/rubber strap and i sold it. Finally got around to buying the same watch on bracelet but black dial this time. It's the best value for money diver out there. Rolex is not worth the crazy premium when this kind of watch is around. Love it

I own both but my Omega is the new Planet Ocean Chronograph Master Chronometer. Honestly, the Omega is a better watch in movement and execution. The new PO design looks and feels more "upscale" than my SD43. Ceramic dial is in another league than how Rolex does their dial printing. .The SD43 feels and looks like a big Sub and that is its selling point when you want a Rolex larger than the standard 40mm Sub. I find the PO more interesting to wear as the black Sub look is everywhere. The Omega "pops" more on the wrist and has more presence. Omega feels like they are constantly improving their watches where Rolex feels like they are coasting a bit in design and features. The sapphire case back on the PO makes the SD43 feel boring and underwhelming. I feel like I paid too much at msrp with my SD43 but feel just the opposite with my Omega. If I had to pick one hard core diver then the Omega would be it.

We cannot compare retail vs retail prices, because Rolex Sea Dweller is unavailable and cannot be purchased at retail. So the only fair comparison is pre-owned vs pre-owned. A pre-owned Planet Ocean 600M (215.30.40.20.01.001) costs around $4200 vs $14700 for the Sea Dweller (126600). The real question is how can an inferior watch cost 250% more?

Omega all day. I’ve worn both and although you have to respect the Rolex, the Omega truly WOWed me. The Rolex name wows, not the watch. As someone sitting on $10k and willing I bought the PO. Rolled in general no longer drops my jaw unless we are talking about the outside the box style and crystal of the Milgauss GV, or the insane calendar of the Blue Skydweller. Omega all day.

Awesome program Tim - so well presented. As beautiful and classic as the Rolex is - Omega is just blowing me away with it artistic, flowing, texture rich case and bracelet lines and proportions , beautiful very highly visible dial, large visible macho handset and indices and stout bezel / case interface. Martin Norden I agree, although I do think we may be in the minority on that account... I’m pretty sure most people just put up with it for the sake of owning a great watch, but I like how Omega added it as a unique visual distinction between it and every other Diver out there, that while unnecessary for almost everyone, still serves a purpose, and as someone who doesn’t mind how it looks, I’m all for it. I do definitely prefer this application compared to the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup on the new Diver 300M though. Wish they hadn’t changed that.

The Omega is a better bezel than the Seadweller, from a functional perspective. Tim there is absolutely no backwards play on the Omega - where you set it is where it stays. There is backwards play on the Seadweller yet you don't test for it. I've studied your hand movements - not once do you tug backwards on the Seadweller bezel. Bias? I think you just like the sound of the Seadweller more. That doesn't matter when you're diving.

Own both (SD43 and PO2500C XL), love both. The SD43 is superior but not twice the PO9300, well five times in my case, no way. My PO and I go back to 2005, been through thick and thin, my first serious piece. Rock solid and flawless accuracy at +1.5s/d, not a single issue despite being C, not D. The PO feels like a tool whereas the SD is all about luxury. Don't make me chose between the two, I can't.

This is one of the rare occasions that I completely disagree with the reviewer. Omega not only presents a much better value, it is more elaborately sized watch equipped with work-of-art movement and with modern twist on the classical diver's watch design. Rolex SD 43 looks bloated and uninspired, with totally uneccesary cyclops lens and price that once was reserved only for precious metal models. So, in my book it is Omega all the way.

I think Tim articulated the key point at 14:15 - The Rolex is a better gift. Yes. 100%. If it is a gift for me, Sea Dweller all day. If it is my money, the choice is pre-owned Planet Ocean by an order of magnitude.
@gpearce11
@gpearce11 5 лет назад
Christopher Gustafson Absolutely. I’ll take the Rolex as a gift everyday of the week, and twice on Sunday. Then I’ll sell it, and buy the Planet Ocean AND an Aqua Terra for all those times a thick dive watch is too much. If I shopped around I might even have enough left over for a Speedy Pro, leaving me with a full collection of watches I prefer over the Rolex, for the same total price.

@@gpearce11 no need to dress it up Geoff, just tell us you don't like brand Rolex and be done with it 😂 for what it's worth I have a new SMP 300 and it's utterly fantastic however truly nowhere near the SD43. @sdemosi
@sdemosi 3 года назад
@@gpearce11 and that's the point really. The SD price is an illusion unless you're a frequent buyer from a friendly AD. When you compare Rolex to brands such as AP and Vacheron that are direct price competitors in the steel sports market then the Rolex isn't necessarily the best choice. At list price I'd probably get the Rolex, at grey market premiums then not a chance.
@gpearce11
@gpearce11 3 года назад
@@sdemosi I can't disagree with that at all. I definitly respect Rolex enough that I think most of their watches are not only good, if a little reserved, but also mostly worth the money if you can get one at retail (there's still at least a 10% crown tax, even at retail, but with brand equity like Rolex I understand). Personally, I've got a soft spot for the Skydweller; that thing is a marvel of engineering, and one of the cleanest multi-complication watches on the market. But there is simply no way that a Daytona 116500 (ceramic white dial) and a VC Overseas Chronograph (5500V) are truly worth the same price, or that this SD4000 is worth more used than a new GO SeaQ Panorama Date or Blancpain Fifty Fathoms 5015.

I already took the PO.. I think we need to update our comparison way, OMEGA is much better than Rolex in many points.. for example, I’ve tried the bezel in Rolex and found it really vague but the clicking of PO bezel is more obvious and effortless.. the clasp of OMEGA can be adjusted without taking off the the watch, the AR coating of OMEGA is far better than Rolex, rubber in the ceramic bezel is a patent although mine has no rubber because I like it simple, hands of OMEGA is much easier to read & has different lume, Manual Escape Valve is better option because relying on an auto valve for an important issue like “He gas” can’t be assured (open it yourself and assure the escape of gas), lugs of OMEGA is smoother and prettier that Rolex sharp edges lugs, OMEGA dial is bigger enough to make it easier to read than smaller Rolex dial, movement in OMEGA is better and tested by OMEGA, COSC & METAS. OMEGA dial is ceramic as well, 5 years warranty, tested in 6 positions, 15,000 Gauss Magnetic Resistance, reasonably priced so more people can own it and share this joy... when you guys see the crown you just go mad and talk about resale value!! I hate the Cyclops by the way it’s too boring.. all what have been said is my opinion so plz stop trying to convince me Rolex is better.. for me it’s a big Noooooo.. everybody enjoy your watches as long as you love it..
@49fiori
@49fiori 5 лет назад
Men wear Omega and boys wear Rolex. Also, Rolex insults the buyers by putting them on waiting lists, with Omega you just walk into the store and buy the watch, no funny business. And those who only think about resell value never actually have a relationship with their watch, it is like with a prostitute, all they think about is money and how much they can make. That's why I vote Omega!

I've tried on the PO because I like the design but the bezel action was terrible compering to Rolex. You can't tell the difference on the video though. Rolex has a better bracelet as well. Once you handle them side by side you feel the quality is in Rolex, there's no doubt about it. But the travel function is an Omega advantage. For me Rolex all the way.

Slawek M Rolex has better bezel action. Bracelet if far better on Omega, it wraps your wrist like magic. Rolex Sub and SD have both cut my wrist with extremely sharp lugs edges, I cannot believe they have kept those edges so sharp. Here is where it gets dodgy. Since you cannot get Rolex SD at retail, the only fair comparison in prices is Pre-owned vs pre-owned. Rolex SD is 250% more expensive than Omega PO. Even if Rolex is the better watch for you, is it really 250% better?

Good review WBR. In Canada (2022) we're seeing a 55% premium over retail, for a used SD43 on the grey market. A used Omega PO is 20% less than brand new. But even at that, you can have a brand new Omega PO for about 45% less than a new SD43, if you can find one at retail. Omega is a no brainer for the price and you can buy it retail. But the SD43 history and the appreciation wins.

Yes it is chunky, but the addition of the chronograph and the dual color lume are a plus for me, as are the luxurious glossy dial and glossy liquid metal and ceramic bezel. Your review didn't even mention that the Planet Ocean bezel with rubber highlights is optional and most are sold with a solid ceramic and liquid metal bezels in blue or black. Liquid metal is just that, metal not glass, where the numbers are permanently bonded to the ceramic bezel. As for the SD 43, I traded my Submariner ceramic no date and a different Omega towards it, with no regrets, but it still feels very plain.

The fact that Omega sells the PO in all black or blue - I think one of those models would have made a better comparison versus singling out the PO with the orange accents. Some people like that, some don't. But everyone should be aware that the PO is offered in all black or blue. And I would venture to say that the all black or blue models are the most popular. As for the SD, there is no doubt that this is a classic look that doesn't go out of style. However, the fact that Rolex is 3 times the cost of PO - it seems to be a no brainer that Omega PO wins. And lets not forget (even if you want to pay 3 times the price for Rolex), most people wouldn't have that option anyway now days given the situation with Rolex. I say Omega wins.

There was a guy in New York. Tim probably heard of him. People wanted to invest money with him and they had to be put on waiting lists, he would'd told them "I don't accept any new money, we are fully booked with our current investors" People would beg him so they can invest money with him. The reason was obvious, he would make to the investors 15-20% profit per year! So only those lucky and who had good relationship with him would eventually be accepted to join his fund. His name was Bernie Madoff, he is serving a 150 years prison sentence for scamming investors of $30 billion. So when companies tell you have to be put on the waiting list to buy something, it is a scam! Run away from those who engage in shady business practices. Patek does the same with Aquanauts and Nautilus (they are just copying Rolex) and Richard Mille is doing the same. They are hiding something very hideous from you, turn away from such brands. Push it aside no matter how tempting it is, take the risk of thinking for yourself, much more happiness, truth, beauty and wisdom will come to you that way. Peace & Love to you all!

Good points but the demographic buying Rolex now is not a advantage if you are a watch enthusiast. Omega PO seems to be for the owner that actually knows about automatic watches and why his watch is made to superior standards. Rolex owners are now commodity brokers that don’t even know their own style. They buy the brand and not the watch. They're both great and both would be fun to own. Overall, the Sea Dweller may be better, but dollar-for-dollar, the Omega bests the Rolex with better technology. I respectfully disagree on your bezel assessment; the platinum inlay(paint) in the Rolex is more expensive, but the Liquid Metal in the Omega is a greater technological achievement and much more durable. Also the Omega bezel is much easier to keep clean. The indentions in the Rolex bezel attract dirt.

But I have to agree with Tim, Rolex is far more superior when it comes to details and resell value. Not mention the case thickness, which is a huge factor after tried my friend's submariner for several days. But if you are not ready to spend somewhere near or more than $ 10k, go for Omega! @sdemosi

@@robertasmedu I agree Robertas. There's a Rolex bubble at the moment, carefully cultivated by the brand. People want what they can't have. Omega sells technically great watches that you can buy easily if you have reasonable financial resources. Rolex sells aspiration in the form of a beautifully finished but slowly evolving product. Rolex brand management is cleverer but they already have that niche, Omega has to do something different.

The PO movement is considerably better. That twin barrel design with the coaxial escapement provides better rate stability, particularly if you don't wear it all the time. I like the SD & it's a classic but I'm not paying thousands of dollars extra for a nicer feeling bezel. The PO's bezel is nice enough, the ceramic, rubber & liquid metal components are nicely executed. The deep black Rolex ceramic bezel looks richer but that's a matter of taste rather than execution. The clasp differences are a non issue in practice. The PO clasp doesn't open accidentally in my experience. The major issue for the PO as an everyday watch is its hefty size & depth. It doesn't work well under cuffs. The chronograph is even worse. It's surprisingly light on Titanium but the cuff issue persists. It's a beast. Still, you could buy 2 Omega METAS certified chronometer for the grey market price of the Rolex so just buy a dressier Omega watch as well as the PO.

The PO in most liveries is more fun and look at me and let's talk about watches more than the Rolex but that's where the price of it plays nicely. I'm ok with the PO not being as timeless or suitable for every occasion at the price point. Someone will always comment on the PO's looks. The Rolex, yes, but mostly because you're wearing the Rolex, not because of it's sharp looks. Which I personally think it has in spades of course. IMHO. Omega is better in all segments. Excessive is the popularity of Rolex. Whatever the peasant who sells the field is buying Rolex, in order to make it successful, because he has heard that it has a Rolex status symbol, true connoisseurs will always opt for Omega, because they do not want to identify themselves with the peasants who buy Rolex. Honor exceptions. Just to be understood, Rolex is a quality watch, but nothing has changed for decades, so it's already boring. Omega constantly invests in innovation and development, so it is currently a better quality watch than Rolex.

If you actually hold these two watches in your hand, its not even close. The quality of the Rolex is leagues above the Omega. The bezel action on the Omega is a an absolute joke for a watch costing thousands. The bracelet on the Rolex is far better. I could go on and on. Honestly, I think most of the people on here that post these comments have never actually held most of these watches. They have either decided in their mind that they like Rolex or they like omega, and have never actually held either watch. I am a fan of both brands and I personally own Rolex and Omega. Earl James they are not the same price. You can’t compare prices retail vs retail as Rolex is unobtainable at retail. You have to compare pre-owned vs preowned. Rolex SD is 250% more expensive than Omega PO. Can somebody please explain me how can an inferior watch cost 250% more?

@Earl James What do you think will be worth more in 10 years time? And why is that?
@whereRbearsTeeth
@whereRbearsTeeth 5 лет назад
49fiori, it’s pretty simple. First, the Rolex is way more “expensive” on the pre owned market because it holds its value, unlike omega. Omega overproduces it’s watches which results in the grey market being flooded with models like the PO. No matter how great a watch might be, if you can pick one up for a huge discount brand new from a grey market dealer, then the price of pre owned models will suffer. The second reason is Rolex is the better watch.

Daniel Mewes Omega opted for the manual valve specifically so it wouldn’t look like every other watch. That’s why they put it on the SMP, a 300m Diver that needs it even less than the 600m PO does. Yes, it can be polarising, and understandably so, but it does serve its true purpose - to help people identify an Omega dive watch from across a large room. And honestly, while I wouldn’t complain if it was removed, I still prefer it to Rolex’s cyclops date.

Both are superquality, Rolex keeps value better. Great pieces for diving or swimming, but both are too big for everyday wear. So if it's for 10 days a year at the beach or in the pool, then 10K is a bit expensive. My SuperOcean 1500 m does the job for those 10 days a year in the water, I paid 3K. Prefer to spend the money on supervintage, historic pieces that you can wear more often. Also, the manual escape valve - I have a couple of those - is as useless as the cyclops on the Rolex.

Honestly though, as I mentioned elsewhere, when it comes to it you could own a pre-owned Planet Ocean or new Tudor Pelagos AND a new Rolex Submariner for less than the price of the SD43. Then you'd have a dive watch and a much more versatile everyday piece. As opposed to a very dedicated dive watch that might look out of place in some situations. I like the SD43, but it is hard to make a good case for it when considering what you could have instead for the same money. Especially since no one is using more than 100m dive rating in real life. I've certainly never met a diver who told me a tale of the time he went so deep his Submariner broke.

Also, if you do want true versatility out of a dive watch the thinner Submariner and SM300M would both be better choices than either of these. That said, OP considered the SD more versatile primarily because the PO was too ostentatious. Sadly when the time came that model was discontinued and I've been deeply disappointed with the new itinerations. Trying them on they are cumbersome, with dare I say it particularly cheap looking dials. Much prefer PO bracelets to the SMP however. Even looked at one today at a pre owned 40% reduction from rrp. For the price difference, you're damn right the rolex should be miles better. But from a technical point it isn't. The co-axial is a game changer and the British origin of the design increases my fondness for it. In terms of the escape valve, omega probably wanted to try and distance itself from the usual rolex design. I mean every other diver has the rolex/doxa design. As for whether it's ugly or not, I must be the only one who complains about the absolutely garish ringlock motif on the deepsea, or the war and peace written on the dials, but I'm not allowed to dislike it because it's rolex. So it's purely down to subjective taste. They're both behind the times anyway when seiko can make a case that doesn't require a valve. The way I see it, the rolex does indeed feel higher quality, as it should do given the price difference. But the tech in the PO makes you ask the question as to why the SD is nearly twice the price when really its not twice as good. That's where a bit of badge snobbery comes into play.
@ZCT808
@ZCT808 5 лет назад
Whatever the reason it is a fact that if you bought the SD43 new, you could almost certainly resell it for at least a grand or two more on the secondary market. Conversely, the Omega is likely to lose $2K, the moment you walk out of the store. I suspect too that time would not be kind to the Omega. In 5, 10 or 20 years, the Rolex would probably still be selling for considerably more than they are worth today, whereas this Omega will probably depreciate to a grand or two in that time frame. I mean just look at the GMT Master. New they sell for $8-9K if you can find one in an AD (good luck with that these days). Yet the recently discontinued models are now selling in the $10-$15K range, the hard to find new models like the new Pepsi and new BLNR are selling for $15-$18K. And if you have one of the previous generation five digit GMTs, those can top $20K in good condition, even though they would have cost $6K or so new back in the day. So yeah, you can question the secret sauce all you like, but you cannot deny it exists and is worth considering in a watch purchase.
@daiwatkins1984
@daiwatkins1984 5 лет назад
@@ZCT808 that's where you and me differ. I never purchase a watch based on its resale value. How can that be considered enjoyment? I buy a watch to wear and to keep. My polar explorer 2 is battered to hell because I wear it as intended when I'm out in the mountains trekking etc. Rolex's resale values have virtually 0% do to with their quality. It's all down to having some of the best marketing in the world. They manipulate the market to make a mass produced watch seem excusive. Why anyone would baby one is beyond me and that's part of the problem i have with rolex now. Stick any other badge on their watches and they'd drop on value. It has nothing to do with how good the watch is.
