This is my review of the Radiant reflex sight finder from Omegon. It has the same design as the original TelRad and functions just as well. It’s a very helpful tool for navigating the night sky, but it requires knowledge of the stars and constellations in order to use efficiently. Check out this video to find out more about the Radiant from Omegon.

I like having both finder scope with 90 deg and my red dot finder. It’s nice when they are all lined up Great video again. Thanks

I find it impossible to believe that any company would go out of their way to reverse engineer and manufacture a 1:1 copy of a TELRAD. What I would believe is that Omegon has better access to the European market and Telrad already makes this product, in which case it would make far more sense for them to have entered into some kind of manufacturing, distribution and branding agreement. This would require little to no up-front cost from Omegon and only a slight tooling change from Telrad, while offering both something to gain from a product that likely only sells in the double digits on its best day.

Patents comes with a maximum 20 year term so that its creator, as a reward for its creativity, has the monopoly during that term. Beyond such term, there's no reason why Omegon should be critisized for using such design.

Looks exactly like a telrad, even the original wasn’t the best quality. Big and heavy, best suited to large dobsonian use. The Rigel Quikfinder is smaller and has flashing as well as dimming that some people like and that the telrad should have. I often use a laser now, don’t need to bend down and won’t dew up - does need care with use and the batteries can die in the cold. Good video!

@Peter Woolliams Thank you! Glad you liked the video. I haven't tried out the Rigel Quickfinder yet, but sounds like it's superior to the Telrad design. I'll have to try it out, but somehow my preference still lies with the good old fashioned 9x50 finderscope.

@@BogdanDamian Rigel is still quite plastic, easier to shield against dew. I find it hard to disconnect it from the plastic base. I hope your finder is a “correct image” version, I can’t invert my brain!

Good and fair review! It will mostly come down to quality of this product and its warranty and customer service at the end of the day. We shall see how they handle these issues to determine which one to buy.

Again your presentations are so informative, cordial and genuine! Mike here using my wife’s account again it’s easier than signing her out and vice versa lol! I’ve got 2 telrad finders obviously one on each scope the cut glass seems to be well polished and smooth but as you mentioned it’s a plastic finder but very durable! I had a Rigel first and it accidentally got knocked off my counter and hit the ground and went to pieces! So I bought the telrad since a buddy of mine said they were designed for military… well while not breaking down my scope to save time one evening it caught my sliding glass door the tape ripped off with the telrad and it hit the deck and my heart sunk , bummer, I picked it up examined it looked perfect and put it back on the scope no damage and no problem! So I purchased a second one for my other scope which I was able to secure it with screws to the cradle I’m happy about that, but the scope with the finder using double sided tape I use a Velcro safety strip wrapped around the base so if anything ever happens it won’t hit the ground. Also I noticed on top of the telrad there is a warning don’t let the sun shine directly into the reticule it would burn the reticule . I don’t do solar observations or but I suppose if you were setting up during the day for nighttime observation you want to make sure the finder doesn’t happen to be facing the sun accidentally. Thanks again for another great presentation , Mike

@Bonnie Sannicandro Hi Mike! I'm glad you enjoyed this one as well. Yeah, the telrad is a very robust device with one major flaw though. The way it's meant to be attached to the telescope isn't. Mine also fell down a couple o times because the base didn't stick well enough to the telescope tube resulting in loud noises when the focuser hit the ground during the night. Each time waking me up and not knowing what's happening. After all that the telrad didn't had but a small scrape on one of the corners. That's it. Regarding setting it up during the day, I don't think it's a problem if the sun shines directly into the reticule for a second or so. I think that one should avoid pointing it towards the sun on purpose and let it like that for longer periods of time. But it's definitely good to be careful. Bogdan

@@BogdanDamian Cleaning the location where you intend to stick double sided adhesive with window cleaner liquid makes wonder. It will never come off. (never use soapy water solution instead it just doesn't do the same job - it will come off in a year)

Could you tell me what mounting you are using for the radiant. I bought one and I would like to fit it on the dovetail mount of my dobsonian instead of sticking it on with the provided double sided tape.
@BogdanDamian
@BogdanDamian 8 месяцев назад
@Gugukax I made the short dovetail part of the mount myself out of a piece of dense foam which I cut to fit in a standard dovetail shoe. That one came with the telescope.

I just got the Telrad branded one. Manufacturing quality seems a bit sloppy frankly. I'm going to return it and get the Omegon one.

I’ve had my Telrad for about 20 years with absolutely no problems. Good luck with your knockoff Omegon.

Hi! I live under light polluted skies, does this reflex sight dims the sky? Because we will be looking through a piece of glass? And how easy is it on the neck and back as compared to the RACI. I am thinking of getting a RACI finder as the straight through finder on my 8 inch dob is very difficult to use especially when pointing up.
@BogdanDamian
@BogdanDamian 3 года назад
@Irfan Rashid Hi and thank you! The Radiant doesn't dim the view of the night sky at all because it only has a simple and uncoated piece of glass. This in combination with a dimmable LED won't affect the view. As for the viewing position, it's comparable with a straight finder scope and as you wrote, it's not the most comfortable position. A right angle finder scope is way better. If you live in area with heavy light pollution, than having a finder with a bit of magnification is very useful. Without magnification it would be difficult to find dim objects. I think a RACI finder scope would serve you well.

Pretty sure Omegon doesn't require Telrad's approval at all. Patents (if there is one) expire after 20 years. Which is a very good thing for the consumer.

can you fit a TelRad and a Celestron Celestron Piggyback camera mount to gether on a mount?
@BogdanDamian
@BogdanDamian 2 года назад
@Wayne Garrett It depends on the mount, but it should be doable. You just have to find the right mount.

I am looking for a solution for my Zeiss Diascope 85. Unfortunately, the housing is not cylindrical, but rather it resembles a truncated cone.

@hornsby 55 Maybe some tube clamps with a bracket for finderscopes like this one: www.astroshop.eu/tube-clamps/william-optics-tube-clamps-mounting-ring-and-cat-handle-bar-kit-for-zenithstar-61-version-i/p,68812

is it possible to remove the glass in order to clean (from dew or other factors?)
@BogdanDamian
@BogdanDamian Год назад
@raulmunoz2296 Yes, the glass simply slides out and can be cleaned without a problem.
