@@ayushagarwal1342 throughout the book we can at least start to pick up on one thing, he's not at a steady place, and literally nobody's listening to him. The saddest part about that question was that he never got a response. He says it to a cab driver who ignores him. In another cab he asks again, and the cab driver practically insults him. He can't get anyone to listen to him. He's not given the chance to open up. It's ambiguous because nobody cares enough to listen to him, and only by listening to what they have to say, and paying attention to what he's truly asking, can we hear him open up and be less ambiguous.

I read it for the first time in 2020 (I was 26). I had to take a break from it because it reminded me too much of my depression in college. I felt seen in a way I never had before and that's why Catcher is one of my favorite books.

You must know no other characters!

I think Paddington's taken Holden's place in my heart now as my fav (I've been reading Michael Bond during lockd*wn in the country I'm in to raise my spirits), but Holden will always be a character who... made me feel seen, if that makes sense? Someone who didn't talk a lot aloud, but was having a lot of thoughts about the people around them. And not necessarily nice thoughts, Holden often judged people for their authenticity, which sounds like such a little thing, but I think Holden's narration not only did it but did it best. If you would like an intriguing book, read Anthem, followed by The Fountainhead, and then Atlas Shrugged (All by Ayn Rand). Dig deep into their meanings and their ode to individualism. Take care, happy reading.

I've met significantly cognitive 12 year olds, and I do wonder what is so wrong with objectivist philosophies? Practically, objectivism is living your life under the basis of the scientific method: observation.

This is probably one of the precursors to crash course. The other two being the week of learning-in which john and hank made videos explaining science and literature topics and the other was johns few video on the french revolution which have the exact same script as a crash course video.

I honestly could not care less what Holden thinks about me. I may love this book with all my heart, but I probably value Holden's opinion on me lower than that of anyone else, even without considering that he's fictional.

I think the book is more than just an annoying teenager complaining, I hate people who dismiss the book as that. But at the same time your not wrong about tumblr teens, I despise people who try way to hard to relate to Holden. Holden suffers with ptsd and it’s hinted in the book he’s a sexual abuse survivor, I don’t know why teens want to relate to that, maybe to seem edgy but overall it’s how Holden would say: phoney. And yes Holden would hate their guts, or at least J.D Salinger would.

I forced my way through the whole thing, I was very disappointed in it, I'll catch hell with you.

I don't mind your opinion, I actually understand it, couldn't go threw it the first time I tried to read it ... but I did now and I think the language is very important to the impression and the tone of the book and it wouldn't have worked any other way. Caulfield isn't supposed to be a language genius and the story isn't supposes to be out of any other view than his, because his pov is very important to what you've got to learn from the book ... uff. Well. The thing I really disagree on is that you should read it when your reading skills ain't that developed, because it wouldn't do any good to those skills when you read a book with language like this. It's better to read it with good reading skills because one understands the symbolism and meaning behind it better. But I do think one should read it as a teenager ... especially a teenager that loves books. The story can be boring if you read it for the story and the language can be bad if you read it for the language ... but neither is the way it's supposed to be read ... so ;)

I agree with you. I had to force myself to read this goddamn book. I am not sure how I would enjoy this book as a teenager, but I guess I disappointed myself for having too much expectation because people praised this book. In short, I am going to help with ya buddy :)

Aprille, don't feel bad. You having a small brain and being immature doesn't mean that you can't find a book, or author out there that you can handle as a reader. Some authors can't write, but that doesn't stop them from writing.

But thats okay, everyone is human and does this, nobody is perfectly nice! :) I feel like Holden is a way to show this thought. Also (SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) THE END IS THE BEST PART ITS THE PART WHERE EVERYTHING COMES TOGETHER and he's actually REALLY NICE he accepts he's growing up and shows how much he cares about his sister ';3 The book is about a REAL person not a perfectly created person you either want to be with or want to be, its about someone who has PROBLEMS (I dont completely blame Holden for being rude and shitty to other ppl, his brother DIED, he surely had problems to deal with), but thats what makes me like this book :) (thats also what makes him NOT a waste of oxygen) I do care what happens to Holden, this "irritating whiny rich kid", because its not about HIM it stands symbol for people and life in general its just really interesting, its just like what John just said in this video. Sorry if this was long I just really love the book and cant stop defending it and talking about it?? xD Whatever you think I hope you enjoy readin other books and have a good timee :)
