An amazingly filthy day, covered in mud in a very swampy pasture. Luckily there were no cattle on there but their smell lingered on!
I discover a lead token that may have been a talisman against witchcraft or evil spirits. These were sometimes offered as charms to protect against curses or to safeguard against bad weather that may damage crops.
I also show you a similar designed talisman or witches mark that is actually in my home. My home was built during the reign of Edward III and during one of the worst plagues known to man, the Bubonic Plague.
At this time 25% of my home town of Ludlow died from the plague and 50% of people in bigger cities like London or Birmingham died. It was carried by fleas which then infested rats which in turn passed on to humans.
It was brought to the UK via trading ships and worked it's way inland. It affected poverty stricken families who lived in dire conditions worse, which lead to a lack of labourers, menial task workers and farm hands who helped keep the country fed and watered.
It took many years of change, reform and cleaning up of the slums to rid the land of the pandemic. The lack of a workforce meant that wages went up as demand was high... Better sewer systems were built and housing conditions were improved... Those that survived or were born later had a chance of a better life.
I am hoping to do more videos regarding the history of my finds in order to get to grips with what was happening during the period that the artefact or coin was produced.
