I listened to an influencer from Sweden who is also a brand owner. She said that the factories/labs comes up with formulas, for example a cream blush, and then send out a question to all of the brands using their services asking if they want to buy into the new thing. Brands can do some tweaks like colors and scents etc. Thats why it feels like all brands are coming out with the same type of products almost at the same time!

I attended (as a consumer) the LA BeautyCon in at the Los Angeles Convention Center. It was a huge huge event. We had the VIP tickets (300.00) which included a swag bag that was so full of product we had to take it to the car and go back in to attend because it was too heavy to carry around. Every booth had full size free items. The "entertainment" was good but we went for the beauty items. If it comes back like that, it is a good event to attend. I can't speak to how creators were treated because I didn't follow anyone at that time.. I was barely on RU-vid at that time so I was a bit late to the game and unfamiliar with creators etc. I would hope at the next one creators are recognized and treated as they should be.

I have so much to say about a "hair coach" - I realize that we are clearly not teaching good science at schools but do people really not understand that a good portion of what we look like (our skin, our teeth and our hair) is genetic. Yes, we can use products to help with frizziness, we can get the "dead and split ends" cut off, we can use chemicals to relax or curl hair, we can get our teeth straightened and whitened and we can improve skin texture but unless the hair coach is a medical doctor who can prescribe medication that actually changes the hair follicle, they are just another sales person selling a hair care regime at a premium. Just make an appointment with a dermatologist or even your regular doctor.

I agree. I do want to add though that recently a mixed race creator was talking on his podcast about how he didn't know how to take care of his hair untik recently because he grew up with his white mom in a white town. Since he didn't have contact with his father or father's family, he didn't really know what to do with his hair. In those situations, I do think a hair coach could be helpful, however, now we have the internet so I don't know if it's necessary.
@fleetwoodmacncheese4159

I completely agree. I also feel like stuff like this takes advantage of people who can't go to the doctor or dermatologist as it's expensive. So they make cheaper (still expensive though) products and say they have medical benefits. Which just ends up being a lot of money in the long run as you're always buying these "hero" products. Just another company trying to push another unnecessary product for us to stick in our routines. I wonder how many of us have expensive routines with products that aren't doing anything at all but we believe it is. And those products add up to an AT&T phone bill or more a month... 😢 I know I have products like that. I'm going to continue to buy products like that because we're lied to by brands all the time. Another rant of mine but I feel like us consumers are being blatantly lied to constantly. This is why Jen's channel us so beneficial to us. She points out bs that might have went over the regular consumer's or makeup/skincare lover's head. Also, comments like your's pointing these things out help all of us too. 🥝💚🖤
@mixchixbeauty2492
@mixchixbeauty2492 Год назад
I have never met a doctor or dermatologist whoes purview includes teaching you how to do your hair. To the previous comment, as a mixed race women raised by a white mom, I never knew how to care for or style my hair. My mom didn’t know and my doctor definitely didn’t either. I agree you can now find solutions on the internet but this would be helpful for some in terms of managing textured hair. I would just hope their solutions don’t include only their own products.

I’ve seen so many youtubers promote at home IPL devices. IPL is NOT permanent!!! The only permanent hair removal method is electrolysis and that has to be done by a licensed professional. Its quite frustrating seeing ads and promotions like that when its far from the truth

@BeccasaurousRex270 Год назад
I’ve never seen anyone say IPL is permanent. It just reduces your hair so you don’t have to do it often. Just like how waxing regularly reduces the growth and you don’t have to do it as frequently as when you’d started.

*NOTE* Just two clarifiers on the Braun advertising story. (TLDR - IPL isn't a laser, it is Intense Pulsed Light, and the FDA regulates devices while the FTC regulates commercials) 1. My joke about IPL being an actual laser might not have come off like a joke because of how I edited 2 clips together. It's an Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). Here are the facts via Healthline: "IPL is similar to a laser treatment. However, a laser focuses just one wavelength of light at your skin, while IPL releases light of many different wavelengths, like a photo flash. The light from IPL is more scattered and less focused than a laser." 2. The FDA is the entity that regulates cosmetic devices in the US. Per the article in Cosmetic Business, "P&G stated there is no industry standard in the UK for recognizing permanent hair removal and that it followed the US' Food and Drinks Administration (FDA) guidelines of 'long-term stable reduction of the number of re-growing hairs.'" They created their commercial for British audiences based on FDA guidelines for cosmetic devices. In the commentary section when I gave my thoughts, it may have sounded like I was talking about the FDA regulating commercial content in the US. This is NOT the case. Commercials in the US are regulated by the FTC. Sorry for any confusion this caused!

@mariad.6618 Год назад
That is o e thing I'm really envious about- I feel like in the U.S. our FDA is too easily influenced by business interests and not consumer interests - which is originally what they were created to do
@ivechang6720
@ivechang6720 Год назад
@@mariad.6618 Oh dear. Did I misunderstand you? You think the FDA was established to protect consumers? It was specifically created to protect the interests of corporations. Not even business in general but to protect major monopolies of alcohol and tobacco production. The "standards" were set up to be so expensive that smaller independent companies could not compete. Not at all to protect the general public.
@mariad.6618
@mariad.6618 Год назад
@@ivechang6720 - the history of the FDA goes back to 1862 when the Dept of Agriculture used chemical analysis to make sure that products (food) was not mislabeled and was safe for human consumption. While they have, like many other government agencies, become politicized and have clearly become too business fruendly, they were intended to protect consumer health.
@ivechang6720
@ivechang6720 Год назад
@@mariad.6618 You didn't look far enough back? It's best defined and most officially recognized root was as part of the patent office in 1848. Most directly concerned with protecting corporate interests. There were if course even earlier iterations as early as during our colony status.When who was allowed to grow and export what was determined by European governmental interests. Look up the delightful history of the East India company and the many sweetheart government dealings they had across the world. * I apologize for being condescending. It's a bad habit of mine. It's a complex issue imo because profiteers use "protecting you" as a selling point to those generally opposed to over regulating that can hurt smaller interests. While at the same time those trying to protect others use "best interests and profits" to get the cooperation of larger groups of people. It's how it's done but it isn't any less corrupt than it was in Ancient Rome and Greece. Cicely and Pliny discuss this at length btw. Meanwhile each group declaims their individual ideals as the power that made a thing happen. It's the combination and I apologize for investing in more of the same. It was multiple ideologies that combined that have made the FDA what it was, has been and will be. It like every good thing is in flux. Reacting to it's environment, the current powers, and current understandings as needed. I look for the bad trying to avoid stepping into the same territory while you might see the power of the good ideas that help keep it from dying completely. Neither of us is entirely wrong.

I feel like people who can afford $30 hair products for every step probably have a consistent and skilled stylist who can guide them. My stylist was trying to add in this service, mostly it was just annoying - I didn't appreciate her giving me homework and deciding what products should stay/go. When the consultant's solution is always going to be one specific line, it seems pretty hinky and like an elaborate sales technique, not actual education.

Ok so the FDA wouldn’t control advertising à la ASA - two entirely different agencies. The UK version of the FDA is the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, while the US version of ASA is the FTC, Federal Trade Commission, and they enforce truth in advertising laws in America. (That said, you are right that the FDA is criminally underfunded and overworked.)
@jenluv
@jenluv Год назад
I agree that this was confusing. I tried to clarify in a pinned post. You’re right that the ASA is probably better compared to our FTC. The guidelines that Braun went by were dictated by our FDA because they are the ones that regulate devices. The way I worded it made it sound like I was comparing the FDA directly to the ASA, which, you’re right, is a false comparison in their functions. I was trying to compare the strictness of the regulating bodies in general rather than their primary functions, but I agree that I presented it in a confusing way.
@khills
@khills Год назад
@@jenluv It was a bit of an odd argument for Braun to make, since the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency likely signed off, too - but they also have reciprocity agreements with agencies like the FDA, which basically say that "if you've been approved by a reciprocal agency, then supply us that documentation and we'll almost certainly approve you." I don't know that I agree that the FDA fell down here tho. In this case, Braun/P&G was arguing with ASA that since ASA didn't have definitions of terms, they used the FDA definitions. not that the FDA applied this definition to them. Braun/P&G said "there is no industry standard in the UK for recognising permanent hair removal and that it followed the US’ Food and Drinks Administration (FDA) guidelines of 'long-term stable reduction of the number of re-growing hairs.'" (I snagged that from Cosmetic Business's coverage, but I think it was in the P&G press release on the topic, since it's been repeated a few places.) This doesn't mean the FDA fell down, tho - both the Braun Skin i.expert and Silk mini received 510(k) "substantially equivalent" waivers, meaning that the devices were found to be basically the same as other devices already on the market and thus they did "not require approval of a premarket approval application." In other words, because they did the same thing as other devices already being sold, the FDA had no legal standing to require a full review of the product... so the products weren't reviewed beyond the 510(k) documents proving equivalency. In this case, the issue isn't with the FDA, but the laws that hamstring the FDA, which in this case would either be the 1976 Medical Device Amendments, or the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act or amendments to it. …three guesses what I've spent the last academic year working on, and the first two don't count. 😉

Anna Sui's makeup is so pretty, but 100% the kind of thing yiu get just for the packaging lol. I have the tinted black-violet-plum balm, gorgeous packaging. But very heavily fragranced. I wish it would hit Sephora.

Noooo, IPL is not laser, it's just light. Aaaand it definitely is not permanent hair removal, you actually need real laser for that, diode lasers for permanent hair removal and noooo you can't have that at home sorryyy
@darkydoom
@darkydoom Год назад
@@MeretrixTricks light is not laser though. Worked with both IPL and laser machines as a beautician for years and IPL is NOT a permanent hair removal technology. It sprays in all directions, lasers are direct lines. Don't try and tell me all lights are lasers numb nut

@@MeretrixTricks if home ipl hair removal was truly permanent, you wouldn't have to do a touch up every 2 months. complete removal means no more hair in that area ever

@@MeretrixTricks and you just said you need maintenance to keep up the effect. You just in yourself proved yourself wrong. Congratulations on not understanding the concept of permanent hair removal. You see, what laser does, is never ever lets the hair grow back because the actual hair follicle is destroyed, not even once after 10 years will it grow again.

FYI, IPL is not a laser. It is simply Intense Pulsed Light, no laser is used. It is commonly confused.

I attended BeautyCon in NYC and it was an amazing event. I was disappointed to hear about what happened in LA in 2019. I would say I am happy they are coming back but to choose to have their relaunch during Rosh Hashanah seems pretty out of touch. Maybe they didn’t realize the it was a Jewish high holiday, but feels pretty insensitive.

Anytime anyone talks about cash or coins I think about the time my 4th grade teacher gave us a small lecture about putting coins in our mouths (some kid in another 4th grade class swallowed a quarter for some reason. He was okay, btw) or putting our hands in our mouths after we've handled cash... Her reasoning was "prisoners put money up their butts when they get arrested." I never got that out of my mind and I'm still disturbed. We we're 9-year-olds still freaked out and traumatized as this was coming right off of 9/11. So everything all the time terrified us and telling us that made us think our money has been up everyone's butts and we're all going to get horribly sick because of it... She said a lot of weird things and actually was quite terrible but that's besides the point. 😂 Other than potentially smelling like a bhole, the thing is: the smell of cash back doesn't sound luxurious... it sounds like "I just spent a sh ton of money trying to pull myself out of depression and just got 5% back...yay...now to go home and cry because shopping didn't heal me like I wanted it to." Or...is that just me? 😅 I'm going to start putting "THE END" at the end of my comments since I pretty much write a book with my run-ons and grammatical errors... commas just in all the wrong places or not there at all...pure chaos... THE END 🤣🤣🤣🥝💚🖤
