ALWAYS detangle each braid as you take it out. I would recommend putting oil at the base where the build up is and massage it out with your fingers or use a rat tail comb. By putting water on the build up without detangling, you’re basically creating dreadlocks

Yes, I always put oil at the base before I take out the braid. This allows the dirt to pull away from the hair. I use my fingers to detangle each braid as I go, and then use a comb.

Congrats on being a new mom! Just remember, you may be going through postpartum shedding. So that may also be a reason for your edges being a little weaker than normal. Vitamins, water, decent diet, massages with castor oil, and patience should bring back your edges in due time 🤗.

I was screaming all throughout the video😭 the 4months old braids, which I understand cuz first of all you had your baby and getting braids is expensive.. But girl… when you started washing the hair without detangling it first I screamed 😭 It’s at the moment I knew, your hair was gonna suffer😩 Please just detangle your hair with conditioner or oils first to remove the build up also. Only washed after you remove all tangles and knots. We will never know if this was post partum shedding because your technique and the way you treated your hair throughout the hairstyle could’ve also caused this.. It’s also not the braids themselves, they are a great protective style unless it was installed too tight, which would’ve caused too much tension on your edges and gave you allopecia 🤷🏾‍♀️

Littl tip. Next time detangle your hair prior to shampooing. That’s why you had little dreads, the shed hair entangled itself when you shampooed. Always derange your hair first. Less shedding drastically. I was waiting like oh no!!! She about to have Locs all over her head lol

I took my braids out and couldn't detangle because my hair was too hard from the product...so I put conditioner on the hair put a plastic cap on for a while...then tried to detangle I had the worst knots ever...so couldn't detangle ...no choice but to wash...i loss half of my hair...just awful...and I knew to detangle but couldn't.

I learned the hard way the first time I got braids. It took forever to detangle. Now, I take my braids down in sections, detangle, put in leave-in conditioner and oil. I put my hair in big plaits. The next day, I take them out, wash and deep condition. Still need to detangle and blow dry in sections. Good luck to you!

I would love to see an update. I had the same experience just after having my braids in for 8 weeks. The hairdresser put to much tension when braising, pulling my hair out by the root. Using a lot of wax made my hair stick and tangle like crazy. I spend 6 hours detangling before washing. My hair is now slowly recovering. So it’s not only how long you keep your braids, but also how they install them. Sometimes it’s doing more damage than protecting your hair.
@beautywithbre5531
@beautywithbre5531 Год назад
Right bc I've keep (knotless) braids up for this long before and didn't have this problem. However, this time the way they were installed caused them to dread up. Ik it was going to happen to bc of how they were installed the other times i got them. Previously a different braider did them and she actually braided my hair neatly and not so carefree with mixing my hair in a knot. Its probably not making sense but if you see it you would know what i mean lol.. i havent took them down yet but i hope its not all that bad.. mine are 4 months old as well this time 😫
@Forever_MeMe

Yeah that looks more like postpartum shedding than anything. You’re talking about 4 months of built up shed hair on top of postpartum shedding, and not detangling before you got in the shower. Girl lol but really I hope that you were able to find some stuff to help you grow your edges back! ❤️

I'm so curious why do people when they take their braids down. They go straight to putting shampoo in their hair . instead of rehydrating their hair and just putting conditioner and do co-wash for a couple of days and then finally shampoo it. Well that's how I do mine I don't go straight down with shampoo not until maybe the fourth or fifth day

A couple of years ago I saw my aunt and all her hair was cut off, I asked her what happened and she explained that her hair got so knotted after taking braids out and washing it immediately that she had to cut it all off. I could not understand how her hair could possibly be that knotted because I have never seen hair knot up like what she was describing until watching this video. this is exactly what she was describing to me; I wouldn’t wish this on anyone 🤦🏾‍♀️.

Hey sis, I cut my waist length dreads 1 year ago and I'm using box braids as protective style and length retention. I braid my own hair so I'm able to try take the edges down every 4 weeks to prevent damage. I just massage and repart the edges and then rebraid. I cringed throughout the whole video omg. 😭😭 Everyone knows after taking down a protective style you detangle your hair with conditioner that has extreme slip before applying shampoo to it. And the way you shampooed did not help. You gotta section and shampoo. And with you just having a baby added postpartum shedding on top of it. I hope you revived it sis cause I was crying for you watching those chunks come out 😩😩

When I was taking down braids or twists, I would finger detangle and comb out each braid with water and conditioner on my hair. There would be dirt/sweat/shed hair build-up from having the style in for a few months, so I obviously wanted to remove that before washing. I wouldn't rely on my shampoo to take out all the build-up.

I would detangle on dry hair only oil or grease, get a super sharp metal toothpick and work through the knots as best as you can starting from ends to root. My hair is 4 months old as well. I intentionally left them to let my hair grow but i was concerned from the beginning bc of how the edges was installed. My hair has dreaded also, im praying its not that bad but idk. Im scared bc this the healthiest my hair has been before the braids. I don't know how to knotless and wanted to save money but i shouldve got the edges re-done 😩

@@rashida7777 good advice! I wore a super tight bun for a decade and as soon as I saw my edges thinning, I immediately stopped. But then I just neglected my hair for years after that; it was dry with lots of shedding. So this year (now that I’m 40), I decided it made no sense to be kind to my skin and nails, but hateful toward my hair, lol. And now that I’m twisting, oiling, massaging, finger detangling, monitoring, and washing in sections (and without dreading the wash day like I used to), I can see my hair is so much happier. It really does require a shift in your mindset and I feel so appreciative that my thick hair has held on despite my years of abuse and neglect. Girl, don't mind me saying this, it comes from a place of love (because I have been in a position where I didn't know how to take care of my hair) BUT your techniques here are HORRIBLE, period. ALWAYS do a thorough detangling before hopping in the shower either with a pre-poo oil, Aloe Vera Gel or deep conditioner (on damp hair). Get as much shed hair out as possible. In the shower, start with conditioner, especially when you have left a protective style in for too long. Detangle your hair thoroughly - first with fingers and then with a wet brush/denman. THEN shampoo with a clarifying shampoo, look for a clarifying shampoo that'll do a thorough clean without stripping you hair or making it feel like straw. Then go again with a conditioner/deep conditioner after and continue with your styling products out of the shower.
