This is one of the most wonderful blues songs ever written. But it would'nt have been made the way it was made by Canned Heat without the influence of LSD, and other kinds of drugs. Many of the most famous rock songs from this time had that influence. The singer, Alan Wilson, in this song died from a drug overdose just 27 years old. But his way of singing lives on forever. Great choice!!!🙂

Alan died because of barbiturial toxication. In the backyard of his house.

Alan committed suicide. It was not a drug overdose.

Wilson was a unique artist. And A scholastically inclined blues authority. He picked up the phrasing used by a BLACK guy named Tommy JOHNSON (?) FROM THE EARLY '50S WILSON LEFT BOSTON TO HELP A FRIEND IN LA WITH HIS DISSERTATION ON BLUES. THERE HE MET BOB HITE, WHO RAN A RECORD STORE. AND THE BEGINNING OF CANNED HEAT WAS BORN. WILSON BELONGS IN THE INFAMOUS 27CLU , BUT IS NEVER INCLUDED.

The original melody comes from Bull Doze Blues recorded in 1928. He played it with a pan-flute instrument called Quills. Canned Heat changed the lyrics and modernized the sound. No judgement here, all the bluesmen of the 20s, 30s and 40s stole each others songs just the same.

You’re thinking of Going up the Country not this song. Although the source for On the Road Again did come from a blues tune called Big Road Blues by Tommy Johnson.
