The only problem for me was the recording of the song was so much better. I realise there is an effect on a person when they hear a recording of a song over and over it tends to become the psychologically authoritative version of the song. But that isn't the case here. I was willing to submit to a better rendition of the song. I was disappointed. Just as I was disappointed at how they treated some of their songs when I saw them live. I think unbeknownst to Page his original solo was perfectly structured-albeit improvised. Each paragraph of the narrative, as it were, affirmed what came before culminating in repeated pleading. It hit home; it was elegant; it was perfect. This was not.

Back in 1973, Led Zeppelin filmed a concert movie at Madison Square Garden called "The Song Remains The Same" (named after their song) and that's where this footage is taken from. Jimmy Page is playing a combination 12-string and 6-string guitar. He plays the 12-string during the more melodic parts and the regular 6-string during the solo. As others have mentioned, bassist John Paul Jones is playing the keys and using the foot pedals for the bass parts. The instrument is called a Mellotron and was an early version of a synthesizer; it had pre-taped sounds (in this case, a recorder) that you could play through the keyboard. On the studio cut, John Paul Jones played an actual recorder. You REALLY need to react to more Led Zeppelin.

On the studio cut, JPJ played *several* recorders--which is why he used the Mellotron (he called it "the Dream Machine") in concert. Hard to play more than one recorder at a time when you are playing live! And yes, he is also playing the bass parts with his foot pedals. JPJ was as much of a genius as the other 3, and (as I have come to realize) really never got the credit he deserved. I think this is still my favorite song ever and it has to be close to 50 years old! There's a treasure trove of music from them, try: Dazed and Confuzed, The Immigrant Song, In My Time of Dying, Trampled Under Foot, The Rain Song, Thank You and Black Dog for starters. All their songs are fire!

I’m new, curious to see what “ old school “ songs you chose.....meanwhile this masterpiece will take you places......let it.....trust me. 🎼🎶🎹🎸🎤🤘😎🔥🔥🔥🔥 there are no bad LED Zeppelin songs, facts. John Paul Jones on keyboards, plays bass with foot pedals when he’s on keys. 4 talented geniuses = Led Zeppelin. 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Actually the intro is done on the 6 string until he switches to chords. The 12 string gives it that fuller sound. You can tell the difference if you listen...

Led Zep had that perfect blend of blues and old English folk music. They were very influenced by The Lord of the Rings books, too. I was blessed to see them live in San Francisco in 1969. You must now react to the Wilson sisters of Heart covering this at the Kennedy Center Honors tribute to Led Zep with the Obama’s and Led Zep sitting together in the audience! You are very musically sensitive- keep exploring!

Jimmy Page definitely one of the best guitarists of his generation. Robert Plant has a very unique voice. When he came on the radio, you knew EXACTLY what band was playing. What sounds like a flute is actually a recorder (I thought it was a flute, too). The beauty of the 60s, 70s, & 80s was that every band had their own sound, so you could always tell who was playing. I love watching the younger generations listening to and REALLY getting in to the music I grew up on. Love your reaction.

This is the soundtrack of my teens, I still listen to new music but I find I'm never surprised by music anymore , the songs always end up just the way they start, with songs like this they start one way and take you on a journey to God knows where and that was exciting.

Dude, you’re the 1st reactor that I’m aware of that mentioned the “flute.” It’s actually John Paul Jones playing the “recorder” on the keys. JPJ was the quiet genius behind LZ. Loved your reaction, you nailed it!

Robert Plant write the lyrics and he’s got one of the best rock voices ever, Jimmy Page is a guitar God. They are all masters of their art. Page wrote the music. This was voted the best rock song of all time. John Bonham does a a 3/4 and comes back to a 4/4 which makes it sounds like it’s a different beat.
