I'd recommend: Maus, Seth's It's a Good Life If You Don't Weaken, Adrian Tomine's Optic Nerve, Yoshihiro Tatsumi's A Drifting Life and his other books of short stories, Lone Wolf and Cub, anything by Daniel Clowe--Eightball, etc., Will Eisner stuff, Peter Kuper's Ruins or anything by him, Barefoot Gen by Keiji Nakazawa, Stuck Rubber Baby by Howard Cruise, Silly Daddy by Joe Chiappetta, U.S.S. Stevens by Sam Glanzman, there's many others.

I grew up on non-super hero comics in the 80s because I am British and we have a weekly anthology comic called 2000AD which has some of the greatest graphical stories ever told and many of the European writers and artists you love cut their teeth on 2000AD. Here is a list of some of the greatest comics which can be found in collected editions from this publication. First probably the best thing Alan Moore ever wrote is little known and sadly incomplete. The Ballad of Halo Jones with some jaw dropping art by Ian Gibson. The best thing 2000AD is known for outside the UK is old stone face himself Judge Dredd. Because he ages in real time he is in his late 60s and has been in almost every issue since 1977 there is a lot stories and I will list some of my favourites.- His first epic Dredd story was Block Mania and Apocalypse War which ran 1981/82 and still holds up today, especially Block Mania. Everyone’s recommendation as an intro to Judge Dredd is ‘America’ which I like but I’m not as fond as others about. I think there is nothing better to get in to a story about law and order than a procedural and I personally think the best jumping off point in to the world of Dredd is ‘The Pit’ My favourite character from the world of Dredd is the anti-establishment graffiti artist who went on to become the world’s greatest sky surfer, Chopper and my favourite chopper story is Song of the surfer. The art is phenomenal and the story is pure tragedy. Moving away from the future to the ancient past we have Slaine and the story The horned God. In this work Simon Bisley produced the Sistene Chapel of comic book art and I challenge anyone to disagree. One of my favourite series in 2000AD is Bad Company. A trippy, hard edged journey into a future interpretation of the Vietnam War. Finally I recommend Button Man, only volumes 1-3 though. Hard as nails and British as hell. Honourable mention goes to Nemesis the warlock which has just been great throughout its history and I cannot pick a one story above any other. All you need to know is the hero is like the devil and the villains are the humans.

I've never seen anyone mention Slaine before. It's one of my favorite comic books ever! That Simon Bisley art work is unmatched. And, believe it or not, I'm from Brazil and somehow this was released here. I wish 2000AD was more popular overseas...

Connor Farrugia it's also one of my fav and a huge reason for me giving western comics another shot. Honestly if it wasnt for locke and key and for Saga I would only read manga lol

You just put 3 books on my to read pile in one video. Locke & Key, Monstress, and How The World Was. When you described How The World Was it brought to mind some some books I saw on Jeff Lemire's IG that he spoke highly of that you might like. Come Again-Eric Powell, Alone-Christophe Chaboute, Park Bench-Christophe Chaboute. Alone and Park Bench are not dialogue heavy and that's where their beauty lies. He tells the story visually. Come Again was just recently released but the description is making me want to go out and get this. I'd like to personally throw in Royal City it's getting a third tpb too so you can jump into it easily I think it's really underrated but worth a shot. I've also seen the Lazarus Sourcebook on IST. The sourcebook describes life in three of the territories without having to be there. Rucka has said he wants to continue releasing sourcebooks but wants to do territories not focused on in the primary story. I think of the sourcebook as a book of a lot of backmatter that enhances the reading experience. I only threw the Sourcebook in here because I was already throwing out recommendations. BTW I believe all of these are available on IST right now so maybe if you read the description on there it will be more enticing than my descriptions.

One book that never gets the recognition it deserves (IMO) is Revelations by Paul Jenkins and Humberto Ramos. It came out in 2006 and it's a book I re-read every 2-3 years as it always leaves a lasting impression on me, especially the last issue where all gets revealed. If you like dark, cultish type stories you would like this one. It's kind of like a Dan Brown story (especially his novel Angles and Demons) but it's more of a murder mystery in the catholic church where an English detective comes to the Vatican to solve the murder. Of course he finds a lot more than he anticipated. The art by Ramos is the same as your recent mention of that huge omnibus The Complete Crimson. It took some getting used to in this story but after a few reads I really didn't mind his style. It is an R rated story with some graphic images, a little nudity and a lot of F-bombs from the protagonist who left the religion after becoming an adult. He ends up finding it again in the end. Jenkins writes a pretty good story that keeps you riveted.

I have "How The World Was" on my bookshelf. It's time I read it! Also, thanks for the reminder on Giant Days. I've been wanting to read it and it looks like Comixology Unlimited has the six volumes + the 7th volume is only 7 bucks.

I seem to be one of a few who does not like Monstress. It is a quality book for sure, just not my cup of tea. Fortunately there is much more out there one can enjoy instead. Like all the Brubaker/Phillips books and not less phenomenal titles like Locke and Key. I like this kind of videos a lot!
