Bought this about six months ago. I really like the book. The stories were actually pretty decent and got better over time. I'd say the early Doom Patrol was better than the early X-Men, honestly. Anyway, your review pushed me over! Glad it did!
2:35 "DC cancelled it when sales dropped to 250,000." The break-even level for all newsstand comics in the 1950s-70s was 300,000 copies. Anything below that was losing money.
LOL, now 250.000 would be a best seller even with the network of comic book shops and online retailers like Midtown Comics which weren't available in the 50s-70s..
Great review! Not a book I'd buy but fantastic to see all these Golden and Silver age stories being collected. Got to salute DC for that! Thanks Omni dog!
Thanks Omnidog. Cheers from Sydney Oz. This Doom Patrol Omnibus caught my eye elsewhere and a review of it intrigued me enough to want to buy it. But I wanted a second opinion and your excellent video sold it to me. Thanks mate. Hope you're safe and well. Peace and love. ✌ Cheers 😊
I love this classic stuff! I didn't know doom patrol at all; now that saw your review --> instant buy! :-) Great videos. Keep up the great work! greetings from Germany
very fun series. The art from Premiani is superb. I have the archive editions and they are pretty nice, actually they were sold for dirtcheap until recently... so I was surprised that dc sells them in this fashion as well, but it's all due to the new "Doom Patrol" I guess
i finished this omni a couple months ago- loved it. im doing a complete doom patrol readathon- finished kupperbergs run last month, in the middle of morrisons right now. i had the 5 HCs of this run before but it didn't have the brave and the bold issue with the flash. that was a fun issue!
I bought this a few weeks ago but due to work I haven't been able to read through very much so far. Great omnibus though. I've been slowly getting in to the other incarnations of the Doom Patrol (Morrison, Giffen and now Gerard Way's new series) through trades so this is a nice bit of DC history for me.
Looks great! Might have to save up for this collection. I think the "overview" style of review works well especially for these omnibus collections where page and binding quality can be a concern.
Loved this volume. The artwork is especially nice. I was a bit disappointed that the Brotherhood of Evil were the villains of almost every story. Each story follows a similar pattern after a few issues in: a strange event or bizarre new villain appears, the Doom Patrol fights it only to discover that the BoE is behind the whole thing. Great character work on most of the characters, except Rita who winds up either being the typical damsel in distress or is forced into a ridiculous relationship with Mento (which later writers would later explain as Mento having brainwashed Rita). Still, great volume to have in my collection as I've really gotten into Doom Patrol lately (particularly the runs of Morrions, Giffen and Way).
Would love to own this! Trouble is it now appears to be out of print! The resale asking prices are ridiculous! At least Marvel tends to reissue their omnibus’s!
DC seems to be doing a lot better in the collected editions department so it's possible this gets a reprint. It was one of the Silver Age omnis that sold well, I think.
That's from a time period that I didn't care for the Bat Family stories. The Bronze Age Bat Stories I like are from 1970 and end with this period. Which is a long way of saying, it's a matter of personal taste lol! The late 70's-early 80's DC comics did not appeal to me. But they might appeal to you! Try some of the comics on the DC app or digitally if they are available first.
I'm reading the Doom Patrol Omnibus. I just finished issue 90. On page 241, the Chief gives Rita the password RICE, Larry the password CLOCK, and Cliff the password DOG. On page 244, Larry pretends to forget his pasword. There is blurb coming from either Rita or Cliff saying their password is CLOCK, Larry's password. I wonder if the comic had a letters column and if anyone noticed the mistake?
Omnidog's Vault I've always been curious of the how the art looks in that book. I like the oldscool art and coloring of this doom patrol book. New styles of art and ink looks really digitalized now. But love your videos man, keep the content coming it's cool ☺
For those that read Doom Patrol #114, why did Mr. Stokes call Mr. Kurt "sweet'eart" (pg. 2) and "lover" (pg. 3)? I don't think that would be appropriate, but I could be wrong.
Im going to buy a copy. I got BRONZE AGE Doom Patrol/Joker and loved it. I dont like the cover but thats cause Im influenced by the newer designs...I will see if someone will design me a new cover.
You know, I think it might be! We've gotten used to Batman and Superman written to modern standards and their SA appearances can be weird. But this is flat out weird and fun and fits in nicely with the SA without a lot of exposition.
Really could have done without the massive spoiler for the end of the book. I was just hoping to get an overview and a quick look at the artwork to see if this was worth picking up.
I do have them, but you need to be a Golden Age enthusiast to really enjoy them. I can do an overview of one if you like! The writing and art are very raw compared to today, but that's what I like about them.
In some of the issues, there are some scenes that I do not know inspired Grant Morrison. I have the omnibus, but I want to know if I am thinking along the right lines or not, so I apologize to anybody for spoilers, but there will be some. In one issue, Robotman does not see what everyone else does, and everyone sees a poster for a woman with a drawn on mustache and beard. This was supposed to be Dr. Janus. Then, in another few issues, Madame Rouge pretends to be a guy, and a short guy pretends to be a woman. How were those acceptable under the CCA? Wouldn’t they indicate an inkling for Morrison with transgender?
Thank you. I doubt it because it was just masks, but why, if they wanted to go in that direction, didn’t Madame Rouge pretend to be other women and the short guy pretend to be another dude? That is why I find it weirder than bizarre.
@@cubicunity508 I checked it out and it's hard to know what influenced Morrison and what didn't. But as far as the CAA goes, yeah since it's just masks this was pretty harmless and wasn't considered transgender. Quite honestly I am not sure medical technology was advanced enough at the time to even consider the transgender operation. But I may be wrong.
The cover art on these DC Omnibus editions is horrible. I won't buy them for that reason alone. It looks like a Disney cartoon. What an insult to the great artists who actually drew these books. Fortunately, the Doom Patrol were reprinted in DC Archives editions. I'll look for those instead.
Andrew B I totally agree with you. I actually thought it was a newer series and had to check here on youtube to make sure it was thew original 60s issues. I have the vol. 1 silver age version with the original artwork cover. Love the entire series and will buy the omnibus version just to get the entire publications, dreadful cover or not.
