Despite their tragic story, I still couldn't just forget and forgive what Fengxian had done to MaoMao... Abuse is abuse, no matter what the reasons behind it. This revelation didn't justify anything Fengxian had done to her own daughter...
I don't think the purpose was to justify anything Fengxian did. MaoMao didn't forgive either her or her father, and the show made sure to remind us of what Fengxian did soon after this scene. It shows us that even abusers are people, and can be victims of their circumstances and deserve better (because while Fengxian had a hard life, none of it was a consequence of her actions against MaoMao and thus wasn't "deserved"), while also still holding them accountable for what they did. The fact that we were reminded of Fengxian's wrongdoings so soon after she got her "happy ending" suggests to me that the story plans to unpack that later. And also the fact that Fengxian is no longer at the brothel that MaoMao frequents is also a good thing for MaoMao. No longer does she have to care about or care for her mother. Her abuser is her responsibility no more, and it might also bring MaoMao comfort to know that now that her and her mother are no longer frequenting the same space, they can finally heal apart from each other. A lot of abuse victims have empathy for their abusers and what let them to become abusers, while still acknowledging that it wasn't okay or justified. They might even wish the best for their abusers while still cutting them off. Those complex feelings felt by real abuse victims (including myself) deserve to be validated and explored in fiction, and that's what it seems like 'The Apothecary Diaries' plans to do. MaoMao seems to believe in restorative justice rather than retributive justice as well, since she gave her birth father a chance to redeem himself for leaving her mother behind (even if it wasn't entirely within his control). In doing so, she managed to also get her abuser out of the brothel that is supposed to be a second home to her. All I want for MaoMao is for her to process her trauma and get to live her life without Fengxian in it. Fengxian can live as happy a life as she wants from now on as long as it doesn't depend on MaoMao. It's not MaoMao's job to punish Fengxian or get her to grovel in apology, nor would she want anyone to punish Fengxian on her behalf. Even if the narrative did go out of its way to punish Fengxian, that would do nothing to help MaoMao on her healing journey, and I would argue that it would hinder it instead. I want MaoMao to have agency over how she chooses to close this chapter of her life. So Lakan and Fengxian's tragic backstory isn't SUPPOSED to make you forgive and forget Fengxian's abuse. It isn't meant to justify it, but instead explore how abusive structures create abusive people. You can feel happy that she finally escaped her own abusive situation while also still being angry about how she treated MaoMao. Those feelings can co-exist.
Did you know the context FengXian did what she did??She was in late stage of syphilis, that attack central nervous system. While her thought that the child and her didn’t have future coz there weren’t any news of Lakan, she did was bad act but I can’t said it was abuse coz until that moment she taken care MaoMao with her life including gave birth. She was enraged toward her fate, so together with her child cursed Lakan for supposedly abandonment, with cutting finger that is common practice in that era. Ofc it would be traumatizing event, even for adults but those time when you throw curse/accusation was not mere click on keyboard you were death serious. Maomao herself didn’t forget nor forgive that act but she understood thats why she kept treating her and did farewell dance when Lakan at last bought FengXian. If you could do better good for you. Let me said Luomen(MaoMao’s granduncle/adoptive dad) said while parting wisdom to Maomao, ” Don’t act or said anything based on conjecture “.
@CoraMaria I want to Thank you from my heart for these words. Once I was treated wrong by one of my closest friends in past. I knew that she was going through a tough phase of her life, she was a clinical mental patient. Still, I wasn't able to justify her actions because I was the victim but at the same time, I wasn't being able to wish bad for her as I knew her situation. After so many incidents, she isn't in my life anymore. But I know wherever she is, with whom she is, she will be taken care of greatly. Her partner will gradually heal her. At the same time, I am also healing from my wounds given by her, as she is no longer in my life. I can't forgive her but I also wish her to be happy. This mixed feelings DOES EXIST, and you have written about that very well. Thanks for this....
