Omori is the ideal image of what sunny wished he could be although it may be bad in some aspects like omori’s teir 3 emotions looking more self destructive than social.
It is a neat little detail, though it you don't mess around with emotions in the real world, you don't get a chance to notice this at all. It somewhat explains why OMORI has 3 tiers of emotion instead of 2. Although I didn't know SUNNY couldn't feel happy, but it makes total sense.
HUGE SPOILER ALERT: It gives away the fact OMORI is the final boss, as only bosses can feel tier 3 emotions: i.e, Space Ex-BF, Unbread Twins, Sweetheart. As for SUNNY, he’s just dead inside.
Your emotion in dreams intensify for at most triple. Even if you are an unemotional gray rock irl you can still have the feeling you had when you are dreaming, although it is temporary after waking up but you can tell what you would feel at that state. This is your brain's way of doing first aid on your emotional needs. Whether trauma or joy. In Sunny's case he can only feel basic emotions except happiness because he's a shut in, he feels more in dreams more than reality. Edit: My case has been solidified that Sunny not being able to be happy makes my heart ache.

@h feather Kinda, yeah, it means he can’t really express his emotions properly and is restraining himself. They may be considered negative emotions but they’re emotions nonetheless, and they’re meant to be expressed so Sunny can feel proper emotional release.

and whats really interesting is that when he expresses anything he expresses it way too much… like for example angry. thats almost like furious and its lnly the 1st stage…
@@lylyartyeah, repressing emotions tends to make you feel them much more strongly. theyre out of control because you never learned how to manage them. bottling up just causes outbursts at some point later on, which is why its very bad to do it.
The fact that real world Sunny can only fit one emotion tier (minus happy : ( ) definitely fits into the headcannon that after everything happened, he ended up developing Flat Effect alongside his depression and Anxiety
I can see that. On the childhood photos you can still see him happy or just content at least; but during the events of the game he just... You know. Barely reacts to anything and doesn't feel intense emotions. Flat Effect might really be the case.
i kinda like that aubrey and hero are still kinda opposites, for sad/depressed aubrey already has tears, she lets herself cry, while the only change hero's sprites has is theres a bit more blush on depressed. and on happy, hero looks really cheerful, while aubrey is still smiling, she still looks a bit gloomy by the eyebrows aubrey still lets out her emotions while hero _still_ keeps his feelings bottled up, its been 4 years man this was just stuff i noticed lol
I have a feeling that Omori feels more emotions than what Sunny can because Sunny can't really show that emotions, or chooses not to, which is why he always pushes them through in Dreams so he can release them, thus, making him emotionless. Just a theory
People with severe depression to the point of being despaired often don't show much expressions but their emotions run wild inside their imagination. In omori's head you can tell that his ecstastic is him fantasizing, and manic is just being obsessed with some fetish (sexual or not as it shows in his delusional fantasies about aubrey having a crush on him), enraged shows deep hatred and furious is outright with intents of murder (which also shows in black space, depressed and miserable are just the varying degrees of guilt he suffers (disregarding of blaming sunny for it or just feeling powerless as himself that he has limited choices in how to cope with it as Sunny's alter ego).
That's very interesting... In dream world, Omori has one state of emotion more than others. But in the real world, he has close to none. Just sad and angry. As for the others... Angry Aubrey is the same as regular Aubrey and that's concerning. And when she's enraged, she looks full of hatred. Hero bottles his rage even more than in dream world, which could mean that he's afraid of being angry after what he said to Kel the only time he was really angry. Kel seems to be annoyed at best. But not because he bottles his emotions like Hero does. It's because, just like Aubrey stated, he's simple. He's not the kind of guy to get really angry. Although it could be interpreted in a different way. Cause Kel did that face before, when he was annoyed by Aubrey. It means that, even though he looked annoyed, he was actually enraged, which is kind of scary when you think about it... When it comes to sadness... Aubrey is the only one who looks genuinely depressed. And even her seems to be holding back the best she can. The others don't cry. It's like they repress it, even Kel. Like they're repressing their trauma in a way, because it's too painful. As for happiness... The fact that these poor beans only have one state of joy and Sunny doesn't have any make me really sad. Aubrey seems genuinely happy, even if she's trying to hold back, which is probably due to the fact she doesn't want to show weakness. She's been harboring that tough girl act as a way of protecting herself from being hurt. So it makes sense that her pride is holding her back a bit. As for Kel... He looks like he just ate a chocolate bar and is now in bliss XD I don't know, I'm not sure I understand how to interpret it. As for Hero... Maybe it's just me, but... I feel like he's forcing that smile. Like it's not completely genuine. But I'm not sure... Now fear... Is pretty funny. Firstly, because of Hero's face. Why does it look like Pluto's ? XD Secondly, because of Kel's face. How are we suppose to read this cartoony expression ? XD Aubrey and Sunny are the only ones who look really scared. But the both of them don't completely express it the same way. Aubrey seems a bit angry, which is fitting since she uses her anger as a way to protect herself, so she'd probably protect herself from her fear with anger too. Sunny though... He looks completely paralyzed by fear. He's succumbed to it completely. He's not just afraid, he's terrified. It's crazy how much we learn from those characters just by observing the way they express their emotions.
Yeah there is no much difference between neutral and angry Aubrey other that she furrows her eyebrows a little when angry, her afraid animation also seems a lot like enraged other than that she seems to be the most expressive out of the 4 Kel does have difference between angry and enraged and a very little difference sad and depressed but they are very subtle and don’t look that extreme, same with Hero between sad and depressed , there is barely a difference. Sunny can feel only 1-tier emotions and cannot feel happy, but is very interesting how his angry emotion looks a little bit extreme from the get go making him look as if he was already enraged even though he is just “angry”

iirc Aubrey, Hero, and Kel are using their "knocked out" animations, but Hero's actually using an unused variant, since his actual "knocked out" animation is different; Sunny's the only one who's supposed to use the Afraid emotion, so he actually looks, well, afraid
Can we talk about how Hero and Kel look the same at depressed state? It shows their current personality. They may be different, but theyre still brothers, and theyre not alright. Theyre still hiding their true emotions, as Hero not trying to be too emotional, and Kel not trying to be sad or show his negative emotions. They may look better than Sunny or Basil, but they also need therapy alongside with Aubrey. Most of us dont know what Kel went through, of course he misses Mari, and Im sure the scene with Hero made an influence to his mental health And not to forget Hero being shutdown for a year, and scaring Kel when he opened his feelings. God, maybe Im too emotional, but I really think theyre hiding many feelings beneath their smiles
@Wowie Zowie Yeah, I noticed that, too! Hero and Kel don't even have difference between sad and depressed, except that they're lokking in different directions, while Aubrey's sad and depressed faces are much more distinct.
Hero is still the best boy, still looks kinda same even when depressed. Aside from Sunny and Basil, Hero suffered greatly but always try to look tough in front of others
At 1:10 you can see that Hero's scared expression is black and white. I remember this happening to Hero as well in the Dorithi fight and Pyrefly forest. I think this is a coloring mistake because Aubrey and Kel's expressions still retain their purple palette when scared.
I read somewhere that the reason for that is that hero is the only other one that omori that have a phobia ( spiders ) but yeah it doesn’t really applied here

While I do think that most of them are interesting, to be honest I'm pretty sure that Hero's color is an error due to how out of place it looks. But it does make me wonder... you'd think that the team would have caught an easy mistake like that, especially since his fear of spiders is a reoccurring mechanic that happens a lot in pyrefly forest. They probably would have seen his scared animation frequently, but I guess they either did not notice anything wrong, or maybe it was intentional. There is probably no way to know for sure without asking the dev team.
I just noticed when *real world* HERO does his SMILE, his portrait changes to a more blurry pink version of Dream HERO rather than re-using the same clear sharp portrait the actual Dream HERO uses, as if HERO's SMILE is like a faded memory.
Now now correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure you can't actually use that ability as HERO in the real world, heck, you could give KEL that ability and he would "suddenly turn into HERO" smiling So in conclusion I don't think this has any meaning behind it, all emotions in the real world is unused(aside from SUNNY's *afraid*) Edit: I'm pretty sure it's the same portrait
It’s either symbolic of how Omori and the dream world is supposed to be a safe space or it was just scrapped and removed from the game altogether making Omori have no afraid status
This explains why he can feel tier 3 emotions in the dream world: Probably to escape the fact that he can’t feel tier 2 anymore and also why his happy-manic is so forced
Even if Sunny can’t be happy or have any higher stage of emotion than just the 1st stage, I think we can still appreciate the fact that those emotions at least look more real than when he pretends in the dream world

Omori is short for "hikikomori" which means recluse. Hermit. Emotionless. Yet between all four in the dream world, Omori is the only one to have a stage three in the main emotions (Miserable, furious, and manic). His emotions are intense in the last stage, which shows his mental state and how far his psychosis become. Sunny is the opposite of omori, obviously meaning a generally happy, go-lucky type of person. Yet he only has one stage for his emotions. The only one with barely any emotions (or at least barely shows it). This shows how his depression and anxiety (plus possibly many other mental illnesses) has developed for him. Details man, details.
Note: We can see how being a shut out has affected sunny when he is angry, in the dreamworld not even his enraged emotion compares to his face here, hes easy to anger since he hasnt been around many people, we can also note that he has the least amount of health of all the party members, maybe signifying that his actual, physical health isnt good either. we can maybe talk about how in dreamworld kels enraged face is much more extreme than in here, so this could relate to how sunny maybe has never seen kel mad. The sad emotions are INCREDIBALY similiar to the dreamworlds version, so sunny has seen all of them sad at one point, so the theory is, sunny cant be enraged due to actually being enraged already when mad,now him not being able to be depressed is kind of odd, but maybe its because he gave omori those emotions, since sunny never expected to meet his friends again he thought omori would need them more than he would. The happiness thing is obvious, however i could go a little bit more into depth, we can see that sunny only met his friends through mari, and since he err, stopped her breathing, he feels like he was ungrateful for those friends and thought he didnt deserve them, so thats maybe another reason he didnt go to his friends for help. Well thats it folks
So, a summary of everything: - Omori can't be afraid. - Omori feels third-tier emotions. This foreshadows Omori being a boss fight. This also might be because Sunny is only expressing his emotions in his dreams. - The headspace cast all feel second-tier emotions. - Sunny only feels first-tier emotions, except for stressed out, and cannot become happy. ( ; - ; ) This indicates he is repressing his emotions after the incident. - The real world cast all feel second-tier emotions, except for ecstatic. ( ; - ; ) - Depressed Hero looks exactly like sad Hero, except with a blush. This indicates that Hero probably isn't showing his true emotions. - Depressed Hero looks like depressed Kel. Ah, like brother, like brother, even in depression. - Afraid Hero isn't animated at all. He also looks like Pluto. - Angry Sunny is way too angry for the first tier. He looks as angry as enraged Omori or enraged RW Aubrey. This indicates he has anger issues and gets really angry really quickly (this trait is demonstrated on one other occasion. I'll let you guess which). He gets frustrated easily, as shown when he fights houseflies and wasps in Othermart. - There isn't much difference between neutral Aubrey and angry Aubrey. Man, the amount of detail in this game is absolutely amazing.
The Headspace Kel show his emotions so much real and intence than Real life Kel... Maybe that means he doesn't know how to show his feelings anymore? Or... that he doesn't feel confident enough to show it? 'Cuz he's scared of hurting his friends again 'cuz he doesn't know how to help I think it has a lot to do with the fact that Aubrey always tells him that he doesn't know how to deal with other people's feelings and he often hurts others, it seems to have stuck in his head
That's interesting. Omori can hold all emotions 3 times. Sad, depressed, miserable. Happy, ecstatic, manic. Angry, enraged, furious. But he can't feel afraid. Sunny on the other hand, can only hold one charge of emotion and he can't be happy..
OMORI: the only one who can feel Tier 3 Emotions, except Fear SUNNY: can only feel Tier 1 Emotions, except Happiness Afraid real HERO: When he flexes he feels his best.
Kel when sad and depressed looks like Hero when sad and depressed, so I think Kel is also starting to bottle up his feelings, cause he just got his friends back and he doesn't want his sadness to make them leave.
it might not be intentional like you said in the descrip, but the fact that sunny can't feel extreme emotions and can't feel happy at all kinda really makes sense, considering a symptom of depression (and trauma) is anhedonia. that and depression makes it almost impossible to feel extreme emotions

I love the attention to detail in the emotion system, in the Real world every one is still Somewhat grieving so they can't feel estatic, sunny can't feel happy. Sunny can only reach level one in each emotion, while the rest of the party can reach level 2 except for happy.
