Just came back to check on you and how you're doing in music. You seemed to really have a gift in building the tension and keeping/holding it about a year ago or so, and you've certainly improved (from this poor soul's perspective) since then. Phenomenal, dude! Your toolbox seems to have really expanded a lot, and I see you bringing in a lot of tasteful new elements to your work. Additionally, you seem to be really using a lot of traditional themes in building tension, as well as very smooth bridges between the different parts of your piece -- whatever you're doing to build tension in the negative space, I think you're doing an excellent job at it. There's an excellent analogy about a professor who made a class make pots. Half the class would be graded on their best pot. The other half by the pounds of pottery they made. Not only did the other half of the class certainly make a lot of pottery, you know what? They made it better. Way better, apparently, than the class half that agonized over the semester for it. You've clearly continued to refine your skills a lot, I think, and I can see you playing with and balancing the textures in your pieces. Additionally, I think I can see you really just adding so much experience from making and closing out different pieces. That, I think, makes all the difference. I think my suggestion or challenge would possibly be to vary the different time signatures as you can over the different pieces, and begin maybe building tension through dischordant time signatures throughout the piece. You've certainly grown skill in the incredibly fast-paced side of things (a personal preference of mine when tapping rhythms or making feeble attempts to write music). I think maybe a good challenging area is to see what happens if you change the pacing at different points, smoothly, and continue the narrative-building skills through that medium as well. Less is sometimes more -- if everything is fast, then in a way, nothing is. Having those grounding points really adds a lot of value to a piece in terms of contrast, as it makes the impactful points really hit hard. At the same time, having a high-energy piece is really cool, too, I think, so I'd guess there's a balance depending upon whether you want a story, or something someone could listen to to feel epic while jumping dirt hill tracks on a motorbike. Perhaps in the latter case you could even still have the illusion of fast-paced, tense music with how you layer it, while still maintaining the illusion/trick of having slower/different time signatures in it to ground it. After all, rare praise is highly, valued, but if someone used high-faluting words all the time, I think they would somewhat lose their value. :) Exceptionally impressive I think would be if you could work blatant polyrhythms into your work and flaunt them around in interesting ways. Especially if you were to phase it as a "break" from an otherwise helter-skelter part of music. In any case, texture is not just instruments, spatial positioning, or tonality, but I think also time, and that's a freaking hard one to sculpt in. I think you have it down well in the fast time domain, so that may be a good area to grow if you're really looking to bust out your chops on this one. Anyways, feel free to take it or leave it. I will watch your skills continue to grow from the wings with great anticipation. You certainly have my upvote and encouragement, I'm totally rooting for you! :DDDD
