I love the incredibly funny sarcasm in the video. So subtle, that unless you understand the context, you won't see it pass you by. For example: 1930's Era Historic buildings, among which are 'smoothly soaring 1980's era trains.... meticulously preserved in almost original condition....' :D Another way of saying "They are noisy as f*ck and have been patched-up fifty million times and the only tools available are hammers and screwdrivers". Don't get me wrong: I have a lot of respect for the people of Russia. They don't complain and just get on with it. And make do with the resources they have. They are a very resilient people. Oh: And the video is GREAT! As are all the videos I've watched so far on this channel. Very high production values, lots and lots of actual on-the-streets footage, and great drone shots! A lot of RU-vidrs these days rely on archive snapshots, generic video library footage and a couple of random screenshots to plaster together a video that gets millions of views. Yet here we are with a small channel from Russia, who kicks their arse in production values. Well done! :)
I got to " The tram is truly an always welcome guest in any street of Omsk, and shopkeepers, upon hearing its approach, go out to greet it and toss something as a sign of respect." before I picked up the sublime sarcasm.
I think what you have is the USSR was quite centralized but post collapse more responsibility was shifted to municipal and regional governments but they dont have the funding to actually carry out their responsibilities.
Well, I have to admit I can barely understand what she says, let alone catch any subtle nuances of sarcasm. I generally don’t have a problem with picking up accents after a while, but this one really got me. Otherwise it’s a charming video, I just really wish it was narrated by someone with a bit more English speaking proficiency.
I almost never click on videos advertised to me, but something made me want to click on this one, and I'm glad I did. I think Omsk looks very beautiful in this snow. I hope the city is one day lucky enough to get the transit it deserves, but I hope it keeps its charm. Cheers from the USA
@@valzavr8546 I got a very different impression from a local explorer of the partially completed tunnels. So far, it’s 2 Russian videos saying corruption and one comment saying it isn’t.
I've never before seen such a well-staged and narrated video about a tram system, and I have seen many tram videos. Thank you and keep up the excellent work! Subscribed, of course.
The professionalism, standard of photography, editing and commentary in these videos is quite outstanding. They’re a real pleasure to watch. Where required they evoke ‘atmosphere’ particularly well. More, please.
I did it !
In Berlin is a subway station, that serves only for crossing the street. The planned subway line may never been done. In Berlin they modernized the Tatra tram cars and late these came to Poland for cities that can't use low floor trams. Another way to make Tatra trams accessible to wheelchair users is, to split both parts and put a middle part between with no wheels, so there is no step when entering from a tram platform or a sidewalk.
My city built a 5 km. tunnel for a metro back in the 1970's and ended up with very old trolleybuses instead of proper metro trains, using full sized metro stations but for very unreliable service... I thought my city was broke and corrupt but Omsk takes the cake. So sorry for the people that work hard and pay their taxes and don't get what they deserve, especially the tram workers.
The taxes are not so high. But businessmen in Russia do their best to pay less taxes and salary. They hide their money abroad in offshore companies. This was made possible by corruption in our country at all levels of government.
I also had this video as a recommandation by RU-vid for a while. Eventually, I clicked it... why didn't I click it early? It's so nice to see and learn about the trams and tram systems in Russia without having to use Google Translate. They kinda remind me of how Romania's transport looked in the mid-90s. But now, that era (including with running faster on foot near the tram, people traveling attached to the coupler of tram, trams running only when the driver was in the mood for it, in summer trams running with open doors, trams patched and re-patched in the yard) is gone here, as we had to embrace the new EU legislation (some systems closed, other were upgraded, at least the infrastructure, that obviously reduced the overall maintenance costs; we even managed to get rid of our "maxi-taxi" - similar to your marshrutkas - in most of the cities and towns). I still hope to sometime visit Russia, but it's just a hope, as the distances are great, I do not know the language and I need a visa. P.S.: Is it bad if I started to listen Grajdanskaya Oborona after seeing this video? :)
The commentaries and the long aerial travelling at the end, with the music, are really outstanding. The music is very Russian though makes you think of Rammstein… Thanks for sharing !!!
Beautiful video. And while Kulichiq's voiceover is not always perfectly intelligible (thank you for the subtitles), it certainly feels heartfelt - perfectly appropriate for the tone of the video.
A metro with one station should be a great tourist attraction ! Many people should visit. Maybe build a metro line to metro with one station for tourists. No wait, then it would be metro with two stations. Ok forget it, only one station is best !

Alot Of People Say, That Light Rail Network Based Entirely on Trams is Uncomparably Cheaper Than The Metro Construction Would Be, And In this Case. This is True, Let's Hope that This City Of Omsk Will Find the Finances to Build it's 1st Line
Some years ago on a German imageboard called Krautchan, any unrecognized GeoIP would get the country-flag of an enigmatic bird figure with the alt-text "Rerouted through Omsk." This video does nothing to dissuade the validity of that statement.
The surreal bird is called "Winged doom" (and then also Omsk bird) and was created by a German artist knowyourmeme.com/memes/winged-doom-welcome-to-omsk
@@RailwaysoftheWorld1 no problem! I used to live there and it was the cutest thing. Look up the RU-vid channel "Bradley Preston," he's gone into a lot of detail about the line. However, he recently retired.
Is that really a metro? All I see is a pedestrian tunnel. It just looks like a metro station with two entrances, but without any trains, I wouldn't call it a metro.
True, there may be a translation issue. Also the shop keepers greeting the tram by shovelling water on it may also be a translation issue. Still, i love the accent.
It really looks like a metro station, not just because it has a M sign over the entrance, but there are the typical Russian metro swinging doors to keep the cold outside and you can see the arch where most likely the escalators would have run down to the platform. And according to Wikipedia some more construction (like the combined Metro/road bridge and some tunnels) has been done.
@@MartinBrenner You reminded me when I was in Hong Kong several years ago. I saw a sign pointing down that said "subway." I thought, "great, it's a shortcut to the metro," so I went down the stairs. I only figured out after walking through it, that all it was, was a pedestrian tunnel under the street. :/
@@RailwaysoftheWorld1 Turning on the captioning helped me a lot. I think her English pronunciation is good. But there is always an extra layer of complexity involved for non English speaking brain when dealing with accents... Great videos, new subscription from Finland! Really like the Russian style of keeping the same design for decades... Lovely 80's vibes makes me feel comfortable!
Excellent video. Accessible, clean and friendly trams, doing the job they were designed to do a century ago and still working well. Let's hope they get the investment they need, and not spend money on vanity projects like metros.
@@RailwaysoftheWorld1 I meant accessible in terms of them being "on street" and not down inside deep tunnels with widely-spaced stations. I agree that these cars are not easy to access for old people, but low (lower) floor versions are gradually being rolled out across Russia.
@@deepblue188 Yes, if the cities cannot afford them. Metros have had a tendency to be "gold plated", not to better serve the travellers, but to boost the city's prestige. The massive cost of metros bleeds all the money out the transport coffers to the detriment of the rest of the public transport network.
I.e. there is no metro in Omsk and the Carmelite underground incline railway in Haifa, Israel is still the world's smallest with 6 stops and less than 2 km. What Omsk did get was a glorified pedestrian subway, a must for its fierce winter weather. Take heart, Cincinnati in the United States built subway tunnels some 100 years ago but never used them.
Lovely video - really enjoyed it. Nice to know 'corruption' of Towns/Countries isn't the sole preserve of the West. Not so much a matter of, - "what you know", - more a matter of, - "who you know", - especially with The Metro. I wonder how many 'city officials' have "Bigger and better Houses - and more New cars' to start with.
Love the commentary/ had to rewind or pause a few times though as sometimes the commentary went a bit too fast for me to appreciate the joke. Definately want to visit Omsk now to admire the world shortest metroline and the historic 1980's sights. The 1980's is very underappreciated here in western Europe.
Corruption - it dose not matter what system of government you have, you can end up with big hole in ground inplace of metro (or in my country a car tunnel) and MUCH larger hole in budget.
@@howepellin I mean it is vital infrastructure it will have to be serviced at some point either by refurbishing or replacing trams. That in part might be why the corruption is so easy - there is always going to be strong support for paying whatever either of those will cost. Hopefully the trams will at least be something reliable and comffy.
Everything is great in this video, I love to watch about something about distant cities and places. very cool. But, I think you should make the narration in your native language and just add the proper subtitles.
If you are a wheelchair user where these trams run, you either need to be rich and have a personal assistant, or you are sentenced to stay at home forever. Most residential apartment blocks have stairs between first floor and entrance, and also stairs between front door and street level. Stairs and steps are everywhere on the streets, sidewalks have huge potholes or are made of dirt. Parents traveling single with a baby stroller manage to board this tram with the help of the other passengers.

I'm already silent 62 new trolleybuses "Admiral", updated the fleet by almost 70%, write off the trash of the 90s-early 2000s. Among the minibuses, 3 years ago, the yellow gazelles completely disappeared, replaced by Ford, Peugeot, Gazelle-Next. I don't know, have you checked out that toy they put up in Detroit, it was so unused they had to include figurines at the stations so they weren't quite so bleak.
No, have unfinished tunnel and bridge for nothing. Omsk literally buried a lot of money in the ground. Now, because have a risk of collapse of the tunnel (already there was), even more money needs to be buried.
Why do you need to talk so fast, the English Russian dialect on full speed makes it hard to follow if you like me are not a native English speaker, I just watched another video of trams in Russia, a guy talking and it was also high speed. Interesting subject but......
The topic is pretty interesting to me, but I just couldn't keep watching, too hard for me to understand. English is not my native language and thick accent in the video makes it super hard to follow.
