Watch the full version of On Cinema at the Oscars, aired live with your host(s) Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington. Breaks have been edited out. Enjoy!
I think I was in late middle school when that movie came out, I saw it with a bunch of my friends and I remember it being such a “meh” experience I never even saw the sequels
To this day I wonder during every new Oscar ceremony if the Hobbit will win a secret write in “redemption” Oscar because some movies from the past who didn't receive Oscar already should be allowed to complete still
*inhale* [Gregg Turkington mindset activated] Oskar! Like from Schindler’s list. Directed by Steven Spielberg. Starring Lean Nissan, which I thought was a neat sort of nod to George Lucas’ Jedi character. Nissan’s character even kills Mr. Hitler just as he killed Darth Vader way back in 1983.
@@terryeubanks8797the joke finally came full circle during the 10th Oscar special. The actor of this dwarf sent in a clip congratulating Gregg for being the worlds biggest hobbit head
That and the fact that he has such a weirdly extensive knowledge of film, just mind blowing.. all the bizarre random obscure film references he makes are all completely accurate! So crazy
@@BrooklynLuke Don't forget that he's one of the world's greatest archivists. If Tim wasn't obsessed with sabotaging the VFA, it would be the largest tourist destination in the world by now.
Tim's persona in this series really helped me stop drinking. I was seeing similar characteristics in his acting, as I was seeing in my behavior when drinking a lot. On cinema is the Best show ever.
You realized you were becoming more like Tim, but rather than embrace this higher form of living, you turned your back on it? Sounds like dirty Gregghead talk. (But seriously congrats on turning your life around!)
@@jackkingsby116 President Donald J. Trump is a successful businessman. He is winning with China. He got rid of NAFTA. He is winning in the Middle East. The Economy was doing incredible until the Virus. What on Earth could you possibly have an issue with?
gregg is an awesome actor... to have to look that authentically zoned-out gaze all of the time.. there's a real skill and subtlety that i haven't seen matched... i genuinely think he's one of the best
Wow its called vision mixing. Clearly none of you have any expertise in the arts. I suggest you take one of Gregg's film classes and learn the difference.
Normally Tim does a lot of skits and sketches with people who aren't in his league talent/comedic-wise. He and Gregg are on the same ground here. Gregg is a true pro actor/comedian.
Gregg holding up the LOTR VHS with a straight face while the Oscar's are starting is better than every fucking Academy Awards to date christ I can't breathe
Oscar allows the academy to initiate a write-in, supporting the titles and actors that may not be included in the initial list of nominees. Film experts know this, but even some buffs are unfamiliar with this critical nuance to the voting process. At your next opportunity, write down Gregg’s name for Deck of Cards. It’s going to be HUGE!
Tim sobbing on the floor with a picture of Spielberg blown up on the TV is the expert coverage I expect, and demand, from my Oscars analysis. I tip my hat to Oscar, Mr. Spielberg, and On Cinema's expertise!
Yeah. There’s a universe of hilarious stuff in the rest of the specials (love them to bit) - but there’s something so pure about the first one. Watching that horrendous photo of Billy Crystals pop up and hearing them loose their shit off screen is the Crystal-ization of the spirit of it all for me.
I love the rawness and chaos of this one....i think the most well done is the 7th special, thats like an actual play being performed and i still laugh at Gregg's entrance. The car audibly running the whole time is still funny every time i watch the progression of it.
oh my god 25:00 - 25:38, for those 38 seconds of Tim's noises you just know the editor was like "don't cut to him yet, don't cut to him yet, don't cut to him yet. . . . OK NOW"
Serious question ... was that before or after Steven Spielberg directed Tim in Spaghett and the Golden Treasure? The pairing could be a "subtle" homage to a growing relationship between a master filmmaker and top acting talent?
Tims gone on record saying that Gregg is the funniest person he's ever met. Their behind the scenes for Oscar Special 11 really shows their friendship.
illmcchickens1 He also does at 29:25 but it's covered up a bit by the on-screen image. The director is all the more one of the actors in this than ever before, probably trying to fuck Tim & Gregg up and make them laugh, or at least not caring, going for Maxi-Comedy... Their team gets too little credit. Good job all around, guys. Also: Tim likes his champagne, I think, like he likes his women ... dry
The people I live with must think I am abso-lutely insane. I am watching this and laughing until I can't breathe. Jesus Christ, the random but related images are f*cking killing me. This is my kind of humor, apparently.
This entire thing is a highlight reel but I made a personal favorite list. 1:57 People that died 6:15 Let me finish my thought.. 7:41 Roll the tape, ROLL THE TAPE! Well the where the.. 8:39 Pretty sure that is Tim coming down the stairs. 11:10 Massive eye roll from after Gregg tells him he already has the VHS tape reward for the trivia game. 16:54 Tim trying not to laugh 17:26 Finger is throbbing, asks for ice 19:43 Tim tries to pronounce Quvenzhané and just gives up 20:20 Tim really wants ice for his severed finger (should’ve gone to Ralphs) 21:17 “Tim Freeman” (They both break character) 21:46 Fun fact - In an interview when asked about his pronouncing issues on On Cinema he said he used to have some sort of reading problem when he was younger and grew out of it but he learned to channel it for this character) 24:42 - 25:57 (My favorite) The physical and audible attempts to not burst into laughter during Gregg’s rant about The Hobbit winning an Oscar. Pause the video and click 25:39 for a great face. 27:16 Oh here we are let’s go red carpe- oh it’s another commercial. 27:25 Tim hurts his finger 29:18 Cutting to Billy Crystal’s face on the TV with one of them failing to contain the laughter 29:55 - THE HOBBIT! and Tim losing it 39:00 uhh people said sheee uhh, do you think you think orrr uhh, why or uhhhh, uhh why are are you wearing a tie? 46:03 John Aprea drops Gregg’s Godfather tapes as he’s about to sign it and Tim cracks up 47:05 “Want some more Champanguh?” 49:42 Gregg tries to keep it together as Tim fills his Coke can with Champagne after the producer told Tim to stop drinking 53:42 Beyond redemption intoxication 55:02 Sad face 56:15 Mr. Heidecker politely excuses himself 58:50 “Uhhooooooouuu” 59:43 Gregg contemplating his life choices 1:00:03 Stare into the abyss 1:00:46 Tim mixes champagne, water and popcorn then drinks it, causing Gregg to break character. Then Tim passes out for a little bit 1:02:17 Tim leaves, Gregg almost breaks character and continues to try and keep the show going. Again.. 1:07:55 Tim spills his ice, hitting Gregg in the face and getting it all over his VHS tapes 1:10:11 Tim apologizes for being drunk. Starts crying. Throws up on Greggs tapes. Then cries some more. 1:11:46 The absolute state of the set. Ice, tapes, popcorn and popcorn-vomit everywhere.. 1:15:38 Tim suggests to Gregg that vomiting on his beloved VHS collection will be a fond memory. 1:16:15 Tim accidentally wipes off John Aprea’s signature from Gregg’s Godfather 2 VHS. Gregg trying so desperately to stay in character and quickly gets out of there. [Everything between these two time stamps is nothing but fake apologies, fake gifts and broken promises] 1:32:30 “ No NO! No! NO! NO! Yes! No! For real. No! FOR REAL! NO! NO! NO!” 1:38:30 The Hobbit doesn’t win Best Picture. Gregg looking like a kid who didn’t get what he wanted for his birthday. 1:39:13 After all the “apologizing” to Gregg for messing up his VHS tapes, Tim kicks them across the floor after The Hobbit doesn’t win Best Picture. Rewatching this almost 10 years later. My god. Gregg T is truly one of the greatest living artists. And seeing Tim break him and make him laugh a handful of times is just so rare and wonderful. I feel like so many of the little segments and gags they have now since Oscar special 2 is just a bunch of safeguards to make sure that they don’t break out in laughter.
To anyone who might read this: You will never, ever get back the feeling of watching this for the first time. Treasure that feeling. I wish I could go back to experience that again!
19:30 - 20:23 , is GOLD. -his flippant and clueless comments about the actresses -the way he glitches out at 19:43 trying to pronounce a name and then doesn’t speak for FORTY seconds -and then when he finally does it’s just “ummm….ice.” Fucking hilarious.
Just discovered OCAC and the thing that gets me is just how professional the show is and how professional and committed Tim is. You can tell how hard he works and how prepared he was for a live show. Even though he is feeling sick he just keeps putting on a great show and showing us what Oscar and Hollywood are all about.
The thing that makes me sad about the oscar specials and on cinema as a whole is it has so many layers its impossible to describe to my friends why its so great and funny. its like comedy at its slowest and most deliberate pace I watched every oscar special right in a row over the course of a day or two and it was so hilarious at some point but I can never get that across to another.
I think you have to have a sort of disassociate personality in order to fully get it. Like you have to view everyday life in a sort of meta way that most people never do in order to really be tuned in to this sort of esoteric comedy.
@@gsesquire3441 you sound like you get all your information from boomer conspiracy vlogs she hasn't gotten a nomination because of the type of movies she's done recently, which were a very polarizing and more experimental film, then a film that just didn't get good reviews, then a big blockbuster Matthew McConaughey hasn't gotten any kind of award nomination in the last few years either, was he having sex with Harvey? your logic says yes
The in dept knowledge of movies coming from Gregg is sometimes astonishing. I just learnt that Tom Hanks could play an older character because he's aging.
The thing that makes this so brilliant is that I know it's fake but Gregg's constant obsession with The Hobbit winning awards its not even nominated for still irks me lmao
There's moments in this im just watching, kinda smiling, then all of a sudden I BURST into laughter and I can't stop, and they keep doing more awkward moments all at once to the point Im almost crying. I even try to be quiet incase neighbors hear me. I LOOOOOVE when Tim turns around and looks horrified by John Travolta. 59:59 I cried.
@@coffinsmoke1385 what world are you living in? Men won best director in 2020, 2019, and 2018. I stopped looking after that, but it probably goes far further back.
@ around 8 minute block: i noticed it too, he breaks for a sec and then tries to cover it, and does it well. they come close to breaking a few times in the beginning, at one point gregg has to bite his champage glass. they're amazing and subtle, but even they aren't above their own humor, so funny
Yeah there was alot of that,it must be tricky when its live. It does impress me just how good the acting is,reminds me of the first time i saw 'The Office' (UK version!).
