We recently payed a visit to SNAP! Studios armed with a pair or Royer Labs R-121's and Extinct Audio Bm9's to see how they performed side-by-side on grand piano and acoustic guitar.
Recorded through a Neve 5316 console, into Prism converters clocking at 96KHz. No additional compression or processing was applied, other than a subtle low-cut rolling off at 80Hz.

Sounds great. Both mics have excellent quality recordings, but you can buy a stereo pair of BM9s for the price of one R-121. The piano had more solid depth with the BM9, the steel-string guitar had more open sparkle with the Royer. I suspect the BM9 is a better mic than the cheaper Royer R-10, which it is priced closer to. I was never overly impressed with the R-10, it's missing the magic of the R-121. I was planning to buy a pair of Beyerdynamic M-160s for drum overheads, and guitar cab. Then an R-121 later, for guitar cab. This has made me think a pair of BM9s might be well suited to all of those AND piano. Since I don't often use ribbons for acoustic (prefer condensors), and I prefer a darker, deeper tone from a overhead and guitar cab ribbon mics.

On the piano track the Royer Labs R-121 exhibits a mild stridence in the high end frequency range when compared to the Extinct Audio BM9. It wasn't too noticeable on studio monitors, but when I listened to the track once again on my studio monitoring headphones the stridence in the high end frequency exhibited by the Royer Labs R-121 is indeed noticeable. On the guitar track the Extinct Audio BM9 exhibits noticeably more proximity effect than the Royer Labs R-121. The higher proximity effect exhibited by the Extinct Audio BM9 was pretty easily noticeable on studio monitors. The biggest difference was in their mid-range. Royer Labs R-121 has clearer, more detailed and more neutral sounding mid-range than the Extinct Audio BM9. The Extinct Audio BM9 has warmer but boxy sounding mids, which aren't as detailed as the R-121. I'll say the Royer Labs R-121 sounds like a modern refined ribbon microphone, while the Extinct Audio BM9 sounds closer to the old Bang & Olufsen BM3 and BM5 microphones.

The Extinct looks incredible. As well as listening on headphones and studio monitors, it's very revealing to listen on laptop speakers. I'm on a 2015 Macbook Pro and the Royer stands head and shoulders above the Extinct. The Royer has such clear mids making it my choice.

Yeah the Royer has more mids and highs. However, I have a BM9 and for the price difference, I'm not too proud to reach for the tiniest bit of eq required to boost those registers. I love my BM9 and I'm getting another for definite

Wow! The BM9 has a much more dynamic response than the 121 to my ears. I have used Royer 121s for many years now and my singular complaint with the mic is that it is so even and precise that it is difficult for the ear to distinguish differences between the transient information and the tonal information. The BM9 however - WOW! The reason why I’m so shocked by the difference is because even though RU-vid audio uses variable bit rate M4A audio and I’m listening to this over Bluetooth headphones (further compresses the audio data stream) I can still hear a distinct difference. The piano was my personal favorite here. I can remember back to a field recording session I did years ago in a piano shop where I brought my Royers and after I was able to review all of the tracking I was a bit disappointed by how they captured the attack of the keys that I personally have found so enjoyable in high quality classical music recordings. I would be very interested in pairing two Myburgh M1s with two BM9s on a grand piano. I’m going to drive my self insane until I can hear that recording.

They are sounding very alike IMHO the BM9 appears with a bit of more proximity effect

Which one did she end up using on the recording? How do you think these compare with the Coles 4038s?

le bm9 sonne plus "sourd" ici la mauvaise idée c'est de n'avoir pas placé les micros en blumlein, parce que c'est toujours mieux en position blumlein.
