Adam, I'm going to choose to believe that the person commenting "least athletic person on RU-vid" commented it with an air of irony, commenting not on how unimpressive they thought your physique to be, but instead how high the standard is of well-known creators who show themselves working out. I like the ending: "You may not care at all about my feelings, and that's perfectly fine, but think about yours. If you have unrealistic expectations for me, you're going to have unrealistic expectations for yourself, and that's not going to end well for you." That's a great perspective to have. You're a little bit taller than myself and I know how insensitive people can be when commenting on people's height so sorry you had to deal with that. I think a big part of this is cultural and also generational. Whenever I travel to places closer to the equator where people tend to be shorter on average I get treated so much better and more fairly. It really makes me resent the culture where I'm from (the PNW). I say there's a generational aspect to it because I've been single and dating the last few years and I notice single women around my age (40) still really care about height and younger women have been much more open to dating men even men shorter than themselves. I know you're married but just thought I would report some progress there. I caught myself turning down or shying away from an insanely attractive woman that was interested in me because she was quite a bit taller than me and so I started going to therapy. I felt like an insecure asshole probably spreading more insecurity around.
@Brownyman
@Brownyman 19 дней назад
By far the best argument I’ve ever heard about why the United States should adopt the metric system is “minimum height preference in heterosexual women for male partners.” In a population of men height is distributed along a bell curve with some men being very short and others very tall with the majority in the middle. In nations that use the metric system minimum height preference for men by women roughly matches the bell curve of male height distribution. But in the United States this is heavily skewed because of the “first digit bias” e.g. something being priced at $299 rather than $300. This causes women’s minimum height preference in the United States on the tall side to appear normal, but once it goes from 6’2”, 6’1”, 6’0” in height to 5’11”, 5’10”, 5’9” and lower the minimum height preference drops off a cliff significantly. This creates an artificial desire in a significant percentage of women who won’t date a man shorter than 6 feet tall. In the metric system, this does not occur because height is simply measured in centimeters with 6 feet to 5’11” being 183 cm to 182 cm in metric.
@Zora3y
@Zora3y 17 дней назад
not really. I'm from EU country where men are generally taller than rest of Europe, so that might skew my perception, but for most women here, 175 isn't consider terribly short, but women still prefer 180 minimum. That said, most women say they prefer if man doesn't have inferiority complex and that in particular is more important than height - the general attitude to life or personality, not just lack of inferiority complex.
@Muddrelks
@Muddrelks 16 дней назад
@Brownyman It's an interesting idea that anything starting with 5' will inherently be thought of as worse than anything starting with 6'. I do have to say, I'm from Hungary and we have something similar so it's not necessarily an Anglophone thing. Many women here will say they want to be able to wear high heels and still be shorter or equal height to their partner. If you look at the average height this still works out to be a preference of roughly 175-180 cm and above, although not nearly as strict as the "above 6 feet" thing. It would be interesting to see if something like the "above 6 feet thing" is present in countries where the average height of women is already close to 6 feet, like the Netherlands. BTW your conversion is wrong at the end, 5'11" is 180 cm

I'm 5'10" (177cm) which is the shortest man in my family. They're all giants (some have trouble with 2m doorways) and I'm the same height as my mom and sister. That's really hurt my self-esteem, especially when my grandpa came over and thoughtlessly complemented my... broad shoulders (true, but the pause was long). Really got the brain spinning about that. My point is that insecurity isn't rational. I understand I'm just slightly below average male height. People complain about how they feel not any rational basis and it's not a deliberate jab at you or anyone else when they do this even if it may feel that way (and it's just as valid as their feelings).

@@DeathToMayo Sweden, average is 181cm (5'11") for men 167cm (5'5") for women. I'm certainly feeling that even just going outside. I know these stats. The point is just that for me this insecurity isn't rational. It doesn't matter what the general population is like mostly. That's your rate of exposure to the insecurity. But how many other men and women are you exposed to just walking down the street? It's constant there. Even just finding women my height or taller triggers it. In the comparison mind I'm mostly blind to anyone who's slightly shorter or equal to me. They don't count towards countering this unless I spend effort to include them. There's also the fact I'm still quite young. And people have been getting taller. The average isn't entirely accurate to my experience either. Still doesn't make my insecurity rational.

As far as nutritional/stress height effects, I remember seeing Japanese American families entering a Buddhist temple. The grandchildren were a notably taller than their parents, who were quite a lot taller than the grandparents. I was in school in the 60’s and 70’s with third or fourth generation Japanese Americans, and they were not notably short. They were about as big as southern Europeans or Latinos.

While I don't know the intent behind the comment in question, and maybe context would change that, I do suspect from having grown up with, and spent much if not most of my free time on, the internet, I suspect the "least athletic body on RU-vid comment" wasn't actually an insult. It's a common meme format wherein someone is making a comment on the state of something, by acknowledging that something that looks extraordinary in isolation is actually quite begin in context. Often this is used especially in cases that are meant to be humorous by exaggerating the idea, for example you might see the phrase "least gun-obsessed american" over an image of a guy with a gun collection that is hundreds deep. Obviously it isn't accurate, but is rather commenting on the idea that america does at least seem to be more obsessed with guns than many if not most other societies. Another more relevant one might be someone on the video in question, is saying "Least attractive doctor" in reference to Doctor Mike (the actual doctor one lol, not the one in the actual video, I realized this might confuse people). They aren't actually saying Doctor Mike is ugly, rather playing on the obvious sarcasm to say that they believe doctors to universally be very attractive. The irony there is very obvious since I think it's fair to say most people agree that Doctor Mike is incredibly attractive. All that is to say, you're interpretation isn't necessarily wrong, it could just as well be exactly what you pegged it as, and regardless if it made you comfortable that's obviously fair. But what I described is fairly pervasive right now in generic, internet culture, so it could just as well be someone saying that, but because there wasn't as much obvious irony it was hard to pick up on. As you said, you have a very average, if anything slightly above average, build, so the joke doesn't quite land as easily. Maybe that just speaks to a tendency to put ourselves down, with the commenter holding the erroneous belief that they could never be as fit as those they see online.

i don't know his full family history, but i do know his grandparents on one side at least lived through the cultural revolution and escaped to america. if his parent on that side had also lived part of their early childhood in the cultural revolution, they would have been severely stunted by that, and the grandparents wouldn't have had much money after coming to the us, at least not right away, so there's the bad diet and potentially disease in china that could be in effect there.

America vs Asia. Traditional diet in Asia is not nutritious. Even after WWII austerity and revolutions, basic diet is not like what you see at sushi places or Chinese restaurants. It is far more healthy than western food. Asians eat real ingredients that come from nature, not factory made processed crap that the human body is not designed to process or thrive from. Even street food is made from scratch with real ingredients and served to you as fast as fast food in America.

I come from a line of genetically short people, and had kids with a genetically short man. I knew my son would also be short; one of my mom jobs was to make him feel his stature was a non-issue. [Unlike his father, who has a short complex.] I succeeded ... at 23, my son is comfortable being 5'5", athletic, and very confident when he leads others. [He also cracks jokes about spending less on clothing because he can shop in the boy's department.] Being 5'2" myself, my ideal height for a male partner is about 5'6", with 5'10" plenty tall. Any taller makes him hard to kiss ;-) Not all women are drawn to super tall men.

@@lizcademy4809 From what I've seen, scientific studies and data from online dating websites does seem to confirm that women prefer taller men. I think a more reassuring thing to say would be that most women are perfectly willing to date men who aren't their physical ideal. One thing I've noticed on the internet is that when people reassure insecure men, it often devolves into some kind of misogyny. For example, someone in this comment section stated that women who only date tall men are not "well adjusted". Don't take this the wrong way, but I think when you downplay women's preferences to make men feel better, it just hurts women. Women have just as much a right as men to be superficial and choosy.
